@ all

My advice is not to torment Barry with secondary problems at the moment, like browsers, print drivers et similia. Those are just details, there are thousands of ways of installing and running any browser. Those are the last details for an operating system, the things to do last. One can always keep on using Scarthgap for a while.

Please let him concentrate on more important questions (E.g.: integration of KDE apps, letting LibreOffice from the Debian repo work etc...). I think that this Daedalus can really become the next big thing in the Linux world with just a little bit of refinement.

When RC become a final release does the RC automatically update to a final release or do we have to do a new raw install.

Just the usual desktop "update" icon.

Cool 8-) Thanks.

@Federico , the problem is "what are secondary problems?"

My oppinion, let's tell @BarryK all the problems that we can find and let him decide in which one is going to put his attention.

Plz, understand me, some days ago, I wrote about a problem with evince and for sure some people consider it a small problem, but for me it could be the reason to continue using EasyOS_daedalus or forget it till it will be a final version.

So for me it is better let Barry decides. What do you think?

First of all: it is called Evince, not Evidence! The fact that you don't call things with their names tells a lot about yourself.

Secondly, Barry decides anyway... and what I do not understand, is why does Barry being the moderator never ban people from his forum.

If I have feedback I'm going to post it.
If feedback wasn't wanted than it would not have been asked for imo.

Good day to everyone. ;)

You are perfectly right... but, for example, bothering for a non-working dual boot configuration with an operating system which has just been released and everyone is trying to fix... is not exactly giving a feedback I think.

Just updated to 6.3.93. Repeated the procedure for recovering Dolphin functionality. It worked. Since it is quite simple once one has the file kf5-applications.menu, I was thinking that it could maybe be incorporated onto the system update script someway, or just added to the menu in case no other / better solution would be found.
Unfortunately I also have to report that the system has somehow become less stable on my hardware. About a half of the times it hangs totally after the X server has started (it becomes unresponsive). It may be linked to the non-perfectly working network driver. I remind you that I'm using the german locale.

I have read this announcement and I'm really excited. At least "on paper", this would be the biggest improvement for EasyOS in a while I think. If we put together this improvement and the enlargement of the repository, EasyOS could be really projected towards the olympus of operating systems. I know that Linux only makes up for 4,7% of the desktop operating systems. However I think that this percentage will inevitably climb.

I would like to report that at variance with previous releases of EasyOS (non Devuan) I am unable to start it in VirtualBox. It boots fine until X, the problem seems related to the graphic driver, as X don't start even setting vesa or modesetting drivers. I tried tweaking the graphic setting in VBox to no joy. Maybe a missing driver in kernel?

My version was late, my apologies. Evince works perfectly well with 6.3.93. You work too fast and too well, I was still at the .92. Sorry for the inconvenience. It is always unpleasant to report problems that have already been resolved.

Easy Daedalus has virtio driver. Easy Scarthgap has virtio and vmware drivers. Easy Kirkstone has vmware driver.

Thanks n00b. Well then, it seems that the culprit may be the missing vmware drivers, as both Scarthgap and Kirkstone boot just right without much fiddling around.

Yes. It seems that the virtio video driver does not work in Virtualbox. You could try qemu. virt-manager (virt-manager.org) is a good GUI for qemu on Linux. There don't seem to be very good graphical user interfaces for Windows.

I installed xserver-xorg-video-vmware_13.3.0-3.1+b1_amd64.deb package from Easy 6.3.93 repository and now Easy 6.3.93 boots with vmware driver in qemu. (I changed the video model type to vmvga on the xml tab in virt-manager).

mtpaint 3.50.10 needed

Post by don570 »

A warning to BarryK that before you release Easy Daedalus 6.4 you should
upgrade to mtpaint version 3.50.10
since it is needed to open webp files.

Everything else worked fine in Easy Daedalus 6.3.93 (6.4 RC1)
I noticed from blog that you are upgrading mtpaint in Scarthgap version 5.0.4

Let's see how it works (fine 4 sure)

6.4 EasyOS_daedalus.

I am using FF 131 portable edition, because the default one is ESR 115 - sniff, sniff.

@BarryK
Is there any need to upgrade to 6.4.1 from 6.4 just curious.

Thanks.

Hello.

I have updated easy daedalus to 6.4.1.
It seems that the login and security manager still doesn't work properly.
I can't switch chromium from non-root to root.

I am not so worried, because I run chromium as root by hitting the executable directly.
The login and security manager of Kirkstone and Scarthgap works fine.

Yes, the simplest solution is just run "chromium.bin" to run as root.

You can make this permanent by editing /usr/local/bin/defaultbrowser and "Exec" line in /usr/share/applications/chromium.desktop

And you will probably have to add "--no-sandbox"

Not really, unless you want to change the builtin browser to Chromium,
or want to get into Zig programming!

/usr/local/bin/defaultbrowser is something like this:

Code: Select all

#!/bin/sh
export -n XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1
/usr/lib/chromium/chromium --no-sandbox --disk-cache-dir=/tmp "$@"

Somehow. the environment variable "XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1" is set, which prevents the Japanese input system from working with Chromium. So I have to unset it.

Also, I found that a few lines I had added to .xinitrc to enable the Japanese input system disappeared after I loaded the devx sfs.

Re: Easy Daedalus 6.4.1

@BarryK

Just curiosity:

You had changed from fitefox to cromium. Is there any "important reason" to do this change or is simply for any "aesthetic/personal preferences" reason?

~~~~~~~~~~
I asked u this because I prefer FF to chromium but (as always for me, haha) that could be changed without any special problem (I am used to do this using the 'default applications chooser).
Thanks a lot and have a nice day u all.
Cheers
Also, I found that a few lines I had added to .xinitrc to enable the Japanese input system disappeared after I loaded the devx sfs.
Such a thing didn't happen before.
It is difficult to do anything about that.
The initrd does a lot of automatic "cleaning up" when sfs layers change.
Yes, I prefer chromium.
Minor reasons, like the refresh icon in ff requires the shift key to be held down to fully refresh a page -- that I find very annoying. And, well, I just like chromium more.
But no problem for anyone who wants ff, just choose "download latest firefox" from the menu.
Hi @BarryK ,
I was curious (not because of vscode)& looked at your build-rox-sendto , following your post, viewtopic.php?p=134351#p134351
In the script here is :
#200407 add packit "ALL" (will join bcrypt and ghasher in menu)
+
packit) MIMEDIR='ALL' ;;
As to my knowledge it is not build in anymore ?
and what about uextract which you've added in early pre-openembeded Easyos 2.2-.3 ?
Changed to Chromium, Zig support in the devx.
Blog announcement:
https://bkhome.org/news/202410/easyos-d ... n-641.html
@BarryK
Is there any need to upgrade to 6.4.1 from 6.4 just curious.
Thanks.
Not really, unless you want to change the builtin browser to Chromium,
or want to get into Zig programming!
Cool Thanks Barry K. :thumbup2:
Okay so just for the hell of it I went ahead and installed 6.4.1 Daedalus onto internal hard drive and it seems to work well with one exception.
When using Chromium to stream Youtube videos that works okay until I open another browser on a different desktop or anywhere for that matter and the web page I'm streaming closes and I know that ain't right.
Only does it on Chromium browser seems I've had this issue before when using Google Chrome and that's a deal killer for me using Chromium and anything Google Chrome related.
I don't open multiple tabs as ya accidentally close one tab ya kill them all so I open a whole new browser.
This is why I prefer Firefox just seems to work better for me.
Okay just though I'd pass that on.
Have a good day all.
I've got a really flakey memory, can't remember anything about packit and uextract.
Are they good to have?
Hi @BarryK ,
Packit and uextract tools are , with right-click options , very handy .
This old forum post was about it ;
https://oldforum.puppylinux.com/viewtop ... 1&start=90 . edit:hmm,looking at it i did not read it all ,or do not remember if i did...
Both are still maintained alive by JakeSFR .
Memory speaking ,my ''hard drive'' does skip info too !
