Gatotray PET from BoorwormPup64-3, a system resources monitor window that sits in the tray. From the menu it can be enabled and disabled to run at boot.

This post was changed from the original gatotray PET version from FossaPup64 posted for this topic. Now has the version included with BookwormPup64 - with two small changes. This Gatotray PET launches htop (instead of lxtask) when the tray icon is mouse clicked and has a black background with red foreground for chart colors that is easier to see (for me)

htop launched, CPU usage, I/O wait, Free Ram & Temperature from Gatotray icon

WPS Office 2016 is a MS Office look-alike that consists of Writer (like Word), Presentations (like Powerpoint) ( and Spreadsheet (like Excel) programs that each have individual launch entries in the menu.
SFS located at the official ibiblio Puppy Repository.
Thanks to 666philb for this SFS.

Re: PET & SFS Programs Compatible With Bookworm Pup64

Post by dogcat »

This is Wine stable release version 8.0 SFS for BookwormPup64. This runs both 32 & 64-bit programs. It is lightly tested with no issues showing, though it has had no games thrown at it.

This was built using the Debian repositories available through APT, the installed libraries then isolated into an SFS. There are no menu entries because that is how it came when installed. It is as delivered.

No guarantees at all, use at your own risk :) It is intended only for BookwormPup64

Installation is simple. First thing is to uninstall any old versions of wine and remove the /root/.wine/ directory if you have one. Best to rename it or move it somewhere else until you do a test run with this version.

  1. Load the SFS
  2. Open a terminal and run

    Code: Select all

    winecfg

On first run, winecfg needs to make the sausage. The warnings during setup can be ignored. It will complain it can't find the directory at /root/.wine/, then it will create the directory at /root/.wine/ and copy a bunch of files from the sfs into it. That takes about a minute. After that the winecfg window pops up and you can configure wine to your liking and change the configuration if needed. (see first pic)

winecfg is the wine configuration console where you can choose which windows versions are being simulated by wine. This version of wine supports simulations starting at WinXP through Win10. Win95/98 programs should run under WinXP mode.

winecfg sets up on the first run and won’t complain after that as long as the /root/.wine/ directory still exists
( unless you have deleted /root/.wine/ ).

The download is at archive org https://archive.org/details/wine-8.0_all_bookwormpup64
File name: wine-8.0_all_bookwormpup64.sfs
size 312MB
md5 184d623cd08451902b846c24d9c3a8d8

Additional information.
You should have a minimum of 2GB of system RAM to use this, but more is better because once you start opening windows apps the memory usage increases of course. This sfs uses about 330MB once loaded.

The pictures show the initial run of winecfg setting itself up, that takes about a minute. The full screen pic shows two 64-bit windows programs (vlc and winrar) running next to two 32-bit windows programs (irfanview and photostudio).

This pic shows first run of winecfg creating /root/.wine/

@radky I have tested all of the tiny PETs from @ETP for quite some time, They are no issues in use of these tiny additions to v10.0.0.3. I think many/most users will find favor in having them.

Each of these are so incredibly useful while also being user friendly. Adds touches of modernization to go along with home's automation at the same time. AND, they are so very small.

Worth considering in the next release of BKW64 PUP

I noticed that Wine is on this list and it's compatible with 32-bit Windows apps apparently.

Before this, I remember having to have a separate 32-bit compatibility sfs as a dependency for Wine. Did you build/compile it with WOW64 enabled by any chance or something?

Thanks for making this btw. :thumbup2:

You are welcome, hope it works ok. Did not compile it, I used the apt package manager and followed the instructions from 3 websites to get it working, it does have the WOW64 and i386 architecture installed. Originally tried to assemble the 8.02 stable version but was unable to satisfy all dependencies, then tried the 8.0 stable and was surprised that it installed and even more surprised that the 32 & 64 bit windows programs run side by side.

inadyn-2.12.0
Compiled from source in BookwormPup64 including statically linked libconfuse, this is inadyn, a small daemon client which runs in the background.
Start it manually when required or use one of the normal methods to have it starting automatically.
Works with any of a long list of possible providers, some free.
Sign up with any of them and then use the details they provide to enter the configuration details into /etc/inadyn.conf

If you have a dynamic IP address (one that the numbers can change at any time) but you want to be able to maintain a 'static' IP in the form of a hostNAME so that people can connect to you at any time (maybe you are running a server for example), then you sign up with a provider and choose a hostname on their domain. This daemon then ensures that if your dynamic numbered IP changes, the connection is updated and people will still reach you via the hostname. Note that there may be other steps such as port forwarding that you need to address in order for incoming connections to reach a running program, but having some sort of static IP is an essential requirement.

More details about inadyn here:-

I have found they will also work in Bookworm Pup64.
Have not tried all of them, but the ones I did, do seem to work in Bookworm Pup64.

Not sure if this will still be helpful, but the 2016 version of WPS Office I've used since then calls home (to report version being used, I think).

You might consider making a simple list of the programs that are submitted and keeping it on your first post. Would save both readers and posters time.

Re: PET & SFS Programs Compatible With Bookworm Pup64

Post by OscarTalks »

I have been experimenting with compiling VLC-3.0.20 from source in BookwormPup64

Generally all seems to build OK and work well. Some optional dependencies are included, a few are left out. In the case of many of these dependencies, the shared library is built-in to the Pup, but the corresponding DEV package is not in the devx so appears to be "missing". This then requires a lot of time and effort researching what can (and what should) be installed via apt or by compiling custom packages from source. I will probably open discussion(s) about the devx in Puppy in other threads. Obviously any shared libraries which have been introduced into the build environment also need to be copied into the package. I think I have done this correctly.

Libraries are all under the x86_64-linux-gnu sub-directory and executables (only) are under /usr/local in order to avoid the unwanted hacks of my files upon installation:-
(--prefix=/usr --libdir=/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu --bindir=/usr/local/bin)

Behaviour of the plugins cache seems different (stricter) compared to earlier versions. I can not simply create a fresh one and copy it back into the package. I put a pinstall script to refresh on installation. If ever you see warnings of a stale plugins cache just run in terminal vlc --reset-plugins-cache and that should resolve it.

This is mainly for my own use and as my own learning experience, but I will upload the package (which I may update later if necessary) in case it is helpful to others or in case others can offer any suggestions to me.
