Vincent has died, age 16

Post by BarryK »

Many of the Puppy old-timers will remember Vincent.
My daughter and partner had two little dogs, Vincent and April.
Vincent became the mascot for some Puppy-derivatives, and also the avatar for some members on the old Puppy Forum.

Searching the old forum:

https://oldforum.puppylinux.com/viewtopic.php?t=19591

https://oldforum.puppylinux.com/viewtopic.php?t=15861

Vincent was also the icon associated with the "spot" user in Puppy Linux:

...that image is based upon a trace created by old-forum member MU:

There were photos of Vincent and April on the Internet, can't find them now.

Vincent had a series of seizures, last week it was so bad, he was in great distress, so they took him to a vet and had him put to sleep. He was over 100 years old in human-years!

April is approaching 16, still very healthy. You might be interested to know, they are/were both vegans. Yes, unlike cats, dogs can have a vegan diet.

Here is Vincent at age 15, in January 2021, looking very healthy:

That means he must have been 16 and a half when died.

Just to show they were still full of vitally in their old age, this short video was taken in January 2021, when the word "walkies" was spoken:

It has a false ".gz", remove that, then just click on it to play.

Truly delightful little dogs!

Please convey my condolence to your daughter and her partner. Those of us who have shared life with a pet know how difficult times like this can be.

Searched my gmail account, some more photos found. These are tracings of an original photo, now lost. They were used in a Puppy-derivative, I think a wallpaper also...

...they were emailed to me in 2015, from Eric Mulcaster.

This is so sad, @BarryK! My wife and I adopted a 8-9 years old dog several years ago, and everybody who meets her says she's adorable and perfect for us. I can't imagine losing her.

Vincent was featured in the Tahrpup wallpaper, and nowadays we have it in SVG form in woof-CE (https://raw.githubusercontent.com/puppy ... ahrpup.svg).

EDIT: in my native language dogs are "he" and "she", not "it"

EDIT 2: typo

These would still be good to use for a pup-derivative:

I think there may have been svg images originally.

Here is a very young Vincent:

I think this was taken a couple of years ago. You can see why he was the logo for user "spot":

That's all I can find.

Wow!
My heart is with you...
May he travel well to his next place.

We lost a canine member of the family a couple weeks ago, only of 3 years but what vacuum that is left behind.

Thank you for sharing him with us. I think many of us grew to care for him and will feel the sting in our own way.

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.
When I was a kid, I wanted to be older.
This is not what I expected :o

Sorry to hear this since he was Puppy Linux icon. But unfortunately short of getting a parrot, all pets tend to have relatively short life span compared to human. So their death rather dreaded but expected. Been a few years since I have had a dog, they take lot more time and energy, very social animals. Lost three 18 year old cats this year, one still around, he has made it 18.5, but be real surprised if he is around this time next year. His attitude really changed after his sister died, he no longer goes outside. Course anymore not so sure how long I will be around... Makes me hesitant to get any new pet. Though I will probably get couple cats again after Kevin dies. Maybe older ones that nobody wants.

Yes, that's why I started this thread, so that everyone will know that the Vincent artwork was based on a real little dog.
Also, to rescue some old photos and artwork. Posted to this forum, they are likely to be around for awhile, unlike many others that have disappeared.

About longevity, near where I live, is an island with a colony of "baby penguins". These are a very small species. Little houses have been constructed all over the island for them, as they live in pairs -- they mate for life.

Unfortunately, their population has dwindled to a tenth of what it was ten years ago. They have about a dozen that were orphans and kept enclosed -- one of them is 25 years old. That's remarkable, as in the wild they only live for about 7 years.

This 25-year-old is female. Penguins mate for life, but she has outlived two husbands, now on #3. A lady who looks after them told us that this little penguin is not sentimental -- the day after husband #1 died, she moved in with #2.

@BarryK :-

Thanks for letting us know, Barry. And many condolences indeed.

Vincent will certainly never be forgotten.....he's an integral part of Puppy culture & 'folk-lore' by now.

R.I.P, little guy.

Mike. ;)

Losing a pet is a very sad thing, I didn't know Vincent's story. I send you a hug from a distance... I have also doubled the size of this orange wallpaper, for those with larger screen resolutions.
