Barry, your GPT-based IMG boots from USB

Post by Clarity »

hello Barry. I saw you post of your issue with a new stick.

I offer this: My oldest PC is a 2007 64bit which is the 2nd year of all manufacturers upgrading, as you will remember. ALL of them boot a GPT-based USB/disk without issue. And we know the benefits. Not sure why to insist MSDOS as this may not be the case anymore.

If members have problems, I'm sure they will respond the actual conditions should any arise from any GPT based IMG you share for our use..

This is just a note of my experiences.

Does MBR support Legacy BIOS and UEFI ?

Yes. But there are some machines whose UEFI firmware only recognize disk in GPT format, so MBR will NOT be compatible in this case.

Does GPT support Legacy BIOS and UEFI ?

Yes. GPT is part of the UEFI spec, so GPT supports UEFI without any compatibility issues.
But for Legacy BIOS, there may be some compatibility problems with some machine, that's why I give 3 stars here, see Notes
To be exactly, the active flag can't be set in GPT's protect MBR. Besides the partition type (0xEE) is not accepted by some BIOS.

I do not know of any UEFI firmware computers that do not recognize MBR.

Hello guys. It's my very first post here so cheers to everyone.
I guess I could fall in love with EasyOS, but it woun't start up on my AMD FX 8 core machine.
Can anyone help me?
I got three machines: two of them are Intel based, and one is AMD FX-8320.
I prepared a microSD 2GB card with the newest EasyOS image. It boots up on both Intels, buy woun't do on AMD.
As for UEFI vs BIOS: one of Intels has UEFI and the other one has an old BIOS.
My AMD machine is based on an AsRock AM3+ mobo with an old BIOS.

I used grub2config to boot on both machines(uefi and bios).

AsRock AM3+ mobo with an old BIOS.

Maybe this could work:

viewtopic.php?p=140855#p140855

-The next idea is to start with an Easy 4.5.5 pendrive (used at least once so that the second partition has been enlarged).

This time we replace completely the content of the second partition by the initial content of the second partition in the Scarthgap version (initial content = the 3 usual files vmlinuz, initrd, easy.sfs)
We do not modify the first partition

Thank you. Recently I discovered that EasyOS boots up when there are no other disks physically connected. Once I had the mobo detached from the case and I run it with the processor and a RAM module. The mobo started up unexpectedly from EasyOS flash drive. I was already pretty sure it was never going to happen.

Now, I plan to connect all drives back. Step by step - one by one to investigate which one is responsible for my frayed nerves.

NOTE: This is still about ASRock-960GM-GS3-FX mobo with AMD FX-8320.
