Hi, I would like to run a game server through PuppyLinux....

Post by rooslootoo »

Any Help
Appreciated

I wish to run this game, MOHREVIVAL and also as a Game-server through Puppy-Linux if it is at all possible, I have some experience with Linux and running server through Linux, but lets just act like I am a beginner. I like how the whole of Puppy Linux runs off my USB Stick and I would like to run the game server in any way possible but of the stick seems doable if possible and if not off the hard drive will work too.

@rooslootoo There is a file in /etc/DISTRO_SPECS that gives version info.
Posting the contents would help identify your puppy version.

It looks like this.

#One or more words that identify this distribution:
DISTRO_NAME="Vanilla Dpup"
#version number of this distribution:
DISTRO_VERSION=11.0.206
#The distro whose binary packages were used to build this distribution:
DISTRO_BINARY_COMPAT='debian'
#Prefix for some filenames: exs: trixiesave.2fs, trixie-8.0.sfs
DISTRO_FILE_PREFIX=vanilladpup
#The version of the distro whose binary packages were used to build this distro:
DISTRO_COMPAT_VERSION='trixie'
DISTRO_TARGETARCH='x86_64'
BUILD_FROM_WOOF='vanilladpup-11.0.x;b46ae87;2024-12-24 16:55:25 +0200'
DISTRO_BDRVSFS='bdrv_vanilladpup_11.0.206.sfs'
DISTRO_PUPPYSFS='puppy_vanilladpup_11.0.206.sfs'
DISTRO_ZDRVSFS='zdrv_vanilladpup_11.0.206.sfs'
DISTRO_FDRVSFS='fdrv_vanilladpup_11.0.206.sfs'
DISTRO_ADRVSFS='adrv_vanilladpup_11.0.206.sfs'
DISTRO_YDRVSFS='ydrv_vanilladpup_11.0.206.sfs'

@rooslootoo The easiest way to get the info @bigpup asked for it to open the file manager (usually ROX) and use the up arrow to navigate to /etc/DISTRO_SPECS. When you click on the file it will open in the editor (usually Geany). Then you can copy and paste it into your post on the forum.
Sorry I don't think I can help with the game server question. I'm not a gamer.

That is enough info about what Puppy version you are using.

The only way you are going to find out if you can do this.

Download and install the game and see if it will even run.

This being a large game that is going to get installed in the save.
You need to make sure the save has a lot of free space to hold it.
If using a save file, 2GB or more free space in it.

Right side of the desktop tray is an icon for personal storage.
Hover mouse pointer over it and it will tell you how much free space is in the save. The save is your personal storage.

When you did the first shutdown and asked to make a save. Did you make a save file or a save folder?

You say Fossapup64 9.6 is installed on a USB stick.
How did you do the install????

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.

@bigpup

Yes, of course the user wants to run this game.

Do you know the size of the installation of the application?

Is it important if tbe user has told you they can install it ti their HDD? Size matters?

Is this relevant if it is a Pupsave file/folder?

Would it be more pertinent to ask about SDL, Mesa, GFX drivers etc?

Please help them :thumbup2:

@rooslootoo

I have assumed a few things, but maybe I need to specifically know for sure.

Maybe we need to get down to the very basics to make sure you have a good install of Fossapup64 9.6 CE.

You cannot tell me how you did the install to the USB stick?
What installer program you used?

The first time you did a shutdown of it.
Did you get asked to make a save?
Did you do that and choose to put the save on the USB or on the internal drive of the computer?

The save is what is used to store any changes, configurations, settings, or added software.

On next boot, the save is loaded, and everything in it is part of the running Fossapup64 9.6

Before you try to install any software.
Need to have a save and boot using it, so there is a place to install to.

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.

Before investing a lot more time there are a lot of things that need to be defined. This info from the web:

To set up a game server at home, you need to: choose a dedicated computer with sufficient processing power, install the appropriate operating system, download and install the game server software specific to the game you want to host, configure network settings including port forwarding on your router, and then start the server to allow other players to connect; remember to check the game developer's instructions for specific setup details and potential required system specifications.

Also, some games will run from Linux, some require MS Windows. Doubt that Puppy Linux is a good choice for this.
