thanks for yr reply, amethyst.

an example of an embedded player would be vlc? or?
the word embedded has me confused because these
players seem stand - alone, apart from the browser.
what are they embedded in? is gxine or xine an example?

when you say:
''Just use another search engine like Duckduckgo or Bing.''
does 'another' mean that there is a search engine already
in use?

i have to run palemoon to have a search engine.
any site which offers a choice of streaming video causes
palemoon to crash. any streaming video causes a crash.

i found a video player but it asks me to supply a url of
the video...other side of crash-proof fence.

so i'm starting to look at newer pups. the target is a
64bit computer. i chose 32bit precise 571 because it
booted ootb and ran ootb . plus i prefer jwm window
manager/ rox file manager. plus i don't like a menu
button that is more than two layers deep.

thanks again: yr answers to my questions help me.
cheers, mm

Yes, run Palemoon and then change the search engine to Duckduckgo or Bing and follow the instructions as mentioned before. I suggest you download Bionic 32
if you are still going to persist with 32-bit. 64-bit is better because all the new browsers and other applications are going that route. I still use an upgraded Precise though with 32-bit Palemoon browser but I also have Bionic 32 on my computer (which is about 15 years old).

i think i've had enough of this problem.
this palemoon has duckduckgo installed.
i enter a youtube + title, then search.
result page, no images but i know why,
i click on a link, a text pops up :
Your browser can't play this video.
a link--Learn more

i have been here before, link
takes me to a page saying
'your browser is uptodate'
blah limk browse our latest blah
i click the link. crash.

thanks for yr patience, etc.
what bugs me is that when i ran
precise571 as a frugal install on this
imac, 4 weeks ago, with palemoon in
the 28 something version, everything
worked. nothing ever crashed.

one more try--find that palemoon version,
wipe this full install, restore frugal install.
if that doesn't work find a 64bit pup.

2x Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T7700 @ 2.40GHz
3095MB (186MB used)

So, it actually works, you have another problem. Remove all instances of Palemoon on your machine (also those normally created in /root) and then install Palemoon again. ALSO - There may be an issue that not ALL youtube videos play (this is a codecs issue), so try different videos AND you can change some settings of Palemoon that may improve results. Type about:config in the browser search bar > go down the list to "media.av1.enabled" and change the value to true. BTW - Your specs are good enough to run a new Puppy. Yes, and always do a frugal instal. So just do a fresh frugal install instead.

Good. Try the suggestions though, can save lots of bandwith with only playing the video and bypassing all the other crap that are loaded on the youtube site.

@mmmrr :-

I would seriously consider trying the 64-bit Puppies, if that was me.

32-bit software development is very definitely winding down now, and browser manufacturers are beginning to drop their 32-bit releases like they're going out of style (which they are, no question about it).

Although my old Compaq tower was 64-bit capable, it was very early, first-gen 64-bit tech.....dating all the way back to 2003! That's how long 64-bit hardware/software has been around. Consequently, I used to run mostly 32-bit Puppies on it, because they just seemed faster & more responsive.....and at the time, 32-bit software was still plentiful.

Since getting this new HP tower last year, I only run 2 32-bit Puppies; Xenialpup 7.5, and Sailor Enceladus' "5.7.1" spin on Micko's original Slacko 570 masterpiece. More for sentimental reasons than owt else; they don't get anything like the use that all my 64-bit Pups do. All software development is switching to 64-bit exclusively, and that's where all the good stuff now is.

Your machine should run the latest flagship, Fossapup64, without ANY issues; if not, Bionicpup64 is very definitely worth a look.

Fossapup64 can be found HERE.

Bionicpup64 can be found HERE.

I think you'll like them.....and they'll both run all modern browsers without any problems (including streaming playback).

Mike. ;)

thank you both,
i will bear yr observation re bandwith/crap
in mind, amethyst.
more time on that frugal install showed me
why i tried a full install. the palemoon browser
did not crash, it froze the browser.
yr suggestions of 64bit pups to try is exactly
what i wanted, mikew, thanks.
if i recall correctly, i tried micko's slacko 570.
i had followed, and admired, his work for ages.
alas, over many hours of otherwise delighted use,
the second submenu of menu choices to get to an
already known entry...was like a porkypine for a pillow.
i have not found the way to put shortcuts on the desktop
to menu entries i use frequently.
also i was foolishly reluctant to go to the forum, though
i found much useful, rich reading & fine spirits : rip noob
cheers, mm

Just to show how versatile these 'portable' builds are, I have the current 64-bit 'Slimmie' portable running in both BK's EasyOS Buster on a 32 GB SanDisk USB 3.2Gen1 Ultra 'Fit', and also in a USB install of the recently-released Zorin 16 Core OS on a 128 GB older version of this same thumb drive, from the /home/user directory. (Chowning ownership was all that was required for Zorin.)

I also have the 32-bit version running in a 32-bit chroot, and use this with my own customized Slacko 560; newer glibc, upgraded kernel, running from a 2 GB SDHC card in a USB-to-SD adapter.

In all 3 cases, Slimmie behaves itself admirably. I'm well chuffed, yes indeedy! :D

impressive info, mikew !!

i have d-loaded yr 1st recommend, fossa-pup,
to replace precise571 on the imac. i have been
engaged with running usb based 571 on some
lenovo thinkpad x61 pc tablet laptops.
Intel Core2 Duo CPU L7500 @ 1.60GHz.

they are magnificently integrated stylus
on laptop screen for drawing or writing or
conventional laptop keyboard use, under
windows7.

an puppy early star developer named pizzaisgood,
murga-forum, worked up a puppy to do that, kept
good notes --i think he made it a project in a
computer studies course.

i think that running the stylus element under wine
is my first try, or a different win emulator if better.

now that i've trialed usbprecise-571 i will try usbfossa.
those lenovo's were top-line at the time: ibm's
re-entry vehicle into personal compu market, [ibm bought
lenovo?] [lenovo=the new one].

i was able to buy a bunch, v cheap, in 2018 when the
gummint sold them off. cheers, thanks for yr work. mm

Right, gang.

New 32-bit version - v32.0.2.0

You can find it at the link in post #1.

Usual instructions; d/l; unzip; place anywhere you like, but preferably outside the 'save'. Click to enter, click 'LAUNCH' to fire it up. It's that easy.

This only really works in Xenial onwards, I'm afraid. (Posting from it now, in Xenial 7.5...)

Enjoy!

It loads and runs in Xenial pup 7.5-64, but several websites
result in the Aw-Snap message. One of them is my email
provider at Fastmail.

It may be a memory problem since I am using very old hardware,
Asus A8V motherboard from 2006 with only 1 gig of memory.

I have no problems with the default Pale Moon browser, I just do not
like it!

Hello

When I unzip the 32 bits, I always have a message telling me that one file failed, and, the LAUNCH-NL isn't there.
I can have it in the menu, but, of course, it cannot work

@orrin :-

Hello, mate; long time no see.

Huh. I recall you always used to have issues with my Slimjet SFS packages, didn't you? :? However, in this case, I can quite categorically state that trying to run ANY Chromium-based browser with only 1 GB RAM is, well; you're on a hiding to nothing, basically!

Most modern Puppies need between 512 MB and a gig of RAM just to function correctly. I KNOW they're smaller than that on the ISO - we're all very fond of quoting tiny sizes for Puppy! - but most forget that everything expands when it's unpacked into RAM, layered, and functioning. Add in the several hundred MB that these browsers expand to when they're running - plus they've always been RAM-hungry, due to running every separate tab within its own sandboxed 'process' - and, well, you just ain't got the resources there, old son.

Mikeslr often posts about various Puppies, and how some 'only' seem to use around 80-90 MB when 'ticking over', but let's be honest, shall we? How can summat that's maybe 250-300 MB on the ISO suddenly get smaller when it's unpacked & running? I'm sorry, but that's never made sense to me, y'know?

Any combo of a Puppy AND a Chromium 'clone' really needs a minimum of 2GB, pereferably more, to properly behave itself. No getting away from that, I'm afraid.

------------------------------------------

@gilles :-

Um; the 32-bit versions don't use the LAUNCH_NL script. That particular item is specific to the 64-bit variants. It can't be missing, because it was never there in the first place....

There's something else stopping your Slimjet-portable from running....has to be. Do this, will you?

Go into the Slimjet-portable directory, please. Rt-click on an empty space->Window->Terminal here. Type in

Code: Select all

./LAUNCH

.....and hit "Enter". What output do you get?

What Puppy are you running here, please? And how much RAM do you have to play with?

Hello,
I downloaded slimjet again, unziped it again, and, this time, it works !
I don't understand why it didn't work before.
Thank you for your patience and your help.
It is the only one up to date 32 bits browser !

Hi Mike, Have just updated to the 32 bit v32.0.02.0 and it's running in Dpup Stretch and Quickpup. However, in doing so I was reminded that it does not offer DuckDuckGo Lite as a search engine. I tried adding it by going to Settings>Omnibox>Manage search engines> Other search engines>Add. I have tried to complete the pop-up box (please see attached image) but I am obviously not doing this correctly as the "Add" is greyed out. Can you point me in the right direction here?

Regards,

Ken.

Hello ken.
Does the DuckDuckGo Lite homepage not offer an option to add to browser.?
Have you tried adding the homepage as a bookmark perhaps.

Are you using a script or adblocker on the DuckDuckGo Lite homepage.

@keniv:-

TBH, Ken, if you can't do summat one way, then do it a different way. Wouldn't bookmarking the 'Lite' site, followed by adding it to the main bookmarks bar (well toward the left-hand side) achieve the same thing?

I use the main DuckDuckGo site. Have done for some time now. The above is all I've done....

Image

This is in 64-bit Slimmie, where I am ATM, though all my browsers are set the same way. Apps & web-store; cloud hosting a/cs; web-video-chat apps.....and DuckDuckGo is always the very next bookmark.....

Have you tried adding the homepage as a bookmark perhaps.

Yes I have got it bookmarked. I also have Settings>On start up set as "Open a specific page or set of pages" and in this I have

DuckDuckGo
https://lite.duckduckgo.com/lite

so the start up page shows the DuckDuckGo Lite home page which is very basic (please see image1). If I open a new tab I get what's shown in image2 but with Bing as the search engine. I would prefer that the search engine here was DuckDuckGo Lite.

Does the DuckDuckGo Lite homepage not offer an option to add to browser.?

As you can see there seems to be no option to do this unless I'm missing something.

Are you using a script or adblocker on the DuckDuckGo Lite homepage.

The only ad-blocker I'm using is the one within Slimjet. Hope this helps.

Regards,

Ken.
Edit: @mikewalsh
Hi Mike,
I've just noticed that our posts crossed. As you can see from the images I think I have what your both suggesting. If DuckDuckGo Lite can't be added as a search engine so as it appears in a new tab I can live with that. I just thought I'd try it as it seemed to be an option. When it didn't work I thought I was doing something wrong. Hence my post.

Just to add to the discussion and sorry if this is not in the correct section but i am trying to run mr walshs slimjet portable from my dpup stretch pup which is installed on a usb and it will not allow me to run from mnt/home as it is "read-only".
How would i overcome this obstacle as mikes portables are the perfect way to run the browser.

I have slimjet running on xenial just fine as xenial is installed on my internal HDD.

@xenial :-

How did you install this DPup Stretch? You didn't use "dd", did you.....because that would also recreate the ISO9660 file-system, which IS 'read-only'. But then, if that was the case, you wouldn't have a /mnt/home.....because that only comes into existence after you've created a 'save' (-file or -folder). And ISO9660 won't LET you create a 'save'.....

Gawd. Unless, of course, your /mnt/home is in a different location to that of DPup Stretch itself..?

Easiest way round this would be to run the portable from an appropriately-formatted flashdrive....ext3 would do fine. That's what I'd do, if it was me, because these portable browsers are quite happy to run like that...

When unpacked - and before you fire it up for the fist time & start creating your PROFILE - around 270 MB. That's comparable with all the other portable 'clones'.....and is about the same as they would occupy - in the 'save' - after being installed in the "normal" way from a .deb or .pet package.

that was precise571

please tell me more about how

i looked earlier today in the package

edit: specifically, what embedded player
and how do you attach it to duckduckgo?

thanks

No, you don't need to install anything else. Just use another search engine like Duckduckgo or Bing. Search for your video eg: youtube rod stewart. You will get a list of all the results, then click the videos tab and click the video you want to play. This works for youtube don't know if videos from other sites will work. BTW - you don't seem to have such an old machine. You should try a new Puppy which should be able to run all browsers without any upgrades and/or other potential problems.

Update here: It seems the embedded method for Youtube does not work with DuckDuckGo anymore but still does with Bing and Yahoo. Does not matter which browser you are using (I think).

Not sure if there is any concerns running it but it runs very well and thank you mike for compiling the portable.

Did you ever get this running under DPup "Stretch"? You were having read-only issues, as I recall.....

Hi Mike,
I know you aimed this question at @xenial but I'm running slimjet 32bit v32.0.2.0 in Dpup Stretch and I'm posting from it now. I have not used it much but I haven't any problems. When I opened it to write this post a message came up telling me that there was an update to v32.0.3.0 and there was an "Update" button. Am I right in thinking that I should not attempt to update it using this button if I'm using your portable version?

Regards,

Ken.

No luck with dpup stretch mike sorry and i don't know why...runs a treat on xenial32.
Don't use the dpup stretch so much so its not a big deal.

More concerned about using slimjet seeing as its from a relatively unknown texan company but it is a nice browser none the less.

@keniv
i got the same message but i just turned it off because as i understand it slimjet has no internal updater pretty much like chromium. ;)
