Pupsave-BKP -- saving entire HOME directory? WHAT HAPPENED?

Post by geo_c »

I'll try to include all the relevant facts, Fossapup64, Jackal re-master installed on a HP laptop hard drive.

When I go to back up my pupsave, which is normally about 3.7 GB, it is now 27 GB. I recently changed the permissions on a data directory in the HOME drive which is about 23 GB, so apparently the pupsave-BKP routine is including this data. I have tried to reset the permissions with every option available in ROX, but I think I might have to type my own command, if indeed this a permission issue.

I changed the permissions so that I could use Ungoogled Chromium (which runs as spot) as a doc reader, and so I gave the data directory public access read and write. That worked for Chromium, but now when I set the permissions back to owner read and write, the pupsave is still including it. I may have clouded the issue by initially changing permissions in XFE, then switching to ROX when I wasn't getting the access I wanted.

Thanks for any clarity on this. I'm not real well versed in the nuances of permissions. I had to leave the house with it running a backup to USB this morning wondering why it was taking so long. Got home and discovered the problem.

CIRCULAR LOGIC - could someone explain?

Post by geo_c »

I might start a new topic for this. But as it relates to my backup issue, I will begin here. I decided to look inside one of my previous small backups, thinking that perhaps I simply chose the wrong home directory to backup my pupsave, and somehow put it inside itself.

As I was examining the previous good backup, I looked in mnt inside the pupsave, and again finding it, as it's a relative link, looked in that one. To help clarify what I'm saying, I'm posting a screenshot of a ROX window, with a very long directory that reads:

/mnt/home/jackalpup-frugal-LowLatency/jackalpupsave-613-i5.BKP-2021.0813-01.06/mnt/home/jackalpup-frugal-LowLatency/jackalpupsave-613-i5.BKP-2021.0813-01.06/mnt/home/

And I supposed I could continue that until something breaks. And this is where my understanding of the circular reference breaks down. I'm looking for clarity, and perhaps this a Unix basic concept. But I like you guys' explanations better than what I can read on random websites.

PARTIALLY SOLVED -Earlier pupsave-BKP works, not permission problem

Post by geo_c »

I went back to an earlier savefile, which doesn't have an issue with backing up, so I'm going to rule out permissions. Some how I seem to have broken the most recent savefile. So as I didn't make many substantial changes. I will just roll back.

Still curious about what's going though. Always an opportunity to learn things more deeply.

Hi
Is it possible that the data directory was symlinked to /home or /home/spot while using the e-reader? some sort of import process?
That would add the directory to the save if it got linked inside /

@puddlemoon I was thinking the same thing. It was 5:30 in the morning and I was in a hurry and I remember doing something wacky and backing out of the save routine and starting over. So it must have left some kind of link in the pup-save directory.

As I mentioned I just rolled back to a previous save, which only amounted to me losing a few color changes here and there, but it worked out in the end, because my re-creation of the changes is even nicer.

In case you hadn't noticed, I promote jackalpup at every opportunity. It's the only OS I use really. I have installs of straight Fossapup for machines with very limited resourses.

I recently asked a question in a thread about changing the text color using JWM Thememaker. The menu tells me I need to have lxsession running. Is that installed?

lxsession is not installed. lxappearance is part of JWMdesk to cover gtk and some icons.
I have not used jwm theme maker but tell me which colors you'd like to change, I may have a clue.

Thank you so much for the support! It was one of the highest compliments to have you migrate from windows to jackalpup as a music teacher etc... I could not have asked for a better confirmation!!

It's been slow going as life is so fast but I will make an update or few this autumn.

@puddlemoon
I mostly want black background in the windows. JWM thememaker has options for normal window and text window background, but it's disabled without lxsession as session manager apparently. I have know idea what a session manager even is.
