@TerryH

Based from boot logs hat you send I saw this line from the boot log

Code: Select all

*******
Last soundcard
8086:160c
8086:9ca0
-----------
Current soundcard
8086:9ca0
*******
The sound device 8086:160c seems appear and disappear. I wonder what audio device is this? That's why I asked if there is external sound devices plugged to your computer

Each boot was the same, nothing added. I have no additional soundcards.

@TerryH

May I see the onboard-devices.lst from /var/hwdata when you started TazPuppy? Please upload here on this thread

This information only appears in 2 of the boots which failed to have sound working (boot 2 and boot 6), I would have thought that it should have been included in boot 3 which also failed.

8086:160c is Broadwell U Audio Controller (which is internal PCH sound)
8086:9ca0 is WildcatPoint-LP High Definition Controller (which would be HDMI)

I have include the onboard-devices.lst, which includes both entries. The soundcards.lst also includes an entries for both devices. Both of these files appear the same whether soound works or fails on boot.

Thanks for your effort to assist in this issue. As it is a minor problem with an easy manual correction, I would think that unless it becomes a more widespread problem that you not spend more time on this at present.

Did you plug/unplug your HDMI device upon boot/shutdown TazPuppy?

@rockedge oops, I mistakenly reported this post, meaning to reply to it. My excuse, I'm using a tablet and don't have my glasses on. Thinking back, I may have done this yesterday on another thread, which a post I made that didn't appear.

@mistfire My apologies for the above error.

In reply to your above post. I only use internal speakers. I don't plug any hdmi equipment. Unfortunately all linux systems want to use hdmi as the default. Why wouldn't internal features take precedence? It's very annoying.

Hi, I haven't had much time to test it this past week, but I downloaded the last release RC11, and instead of creating an USB, I just opened the ISO, and copied the files over to my installation folder (vmlinuz, puppy_tazpup_5.0.sfs and zdrv_tazpup_5.0.sfs, only, since those were the ones originally there).

Booted fine, no problems. I'll keep updating and testing. Thanks!

One note, though. After doing the copy'n'paste of the files, a couple of days later I tried to boot the ISO from an USB, used unetbootin, but the USB wasn't bootable. So I tried another USB creator, Balena Etcher, and it reported that the ISO would not be bootable.

It never happened with the previous.

Sure, no problem. You can make your own project either using remaster or use the tazpuppy build kit
Take note, keep an eye on slitaz cooker and slitaz community activity.

Did you check on the task manager which program has the highest usage? Try also swapping the kernel and zdrv modules from other puppies. Don't forget to rename the zdrv modules to zdrv_tazpup_5.0.sfs

TazPuppy was always LXDE by default. But still you can install xfce4 or build using the TazPuppy Builder (available at the first post of this thread).
There is also biggest changes to be happen on SliTaz. I'm monitoring the situation on their forum before releasing a new version again (if I have spare time)

Nope this project is not dead. Rather its in dormant state because of the slow progress of SliTaz project. The problem now SliTaz was their packages were heavily outdated especially their Xorg-server, its lack of glamour acceleration in order to deal with newer intel videocards and also their GLIBC was outdated too. I frequent monitor the situation on SliTaz community. I hope they will upgrade these very essential packages. If they releasing a new updated package on their rolling release. I will release the new TazPuppy too.

I prefer using slitaz glibc. because it allows tazpup to setup slitaz cooker, an automated slitaz compiling tool. Also it makes slitaz builder easier to maintain

If firefox and chromium was compiled against glibc 2.14 it will work.

smplayer full screen maybe depend on video card support.

Theoretically pulseaudio might work.

UPDATE: pulseaudio works by installing it from tazpkg

Slitaz has very limited kernel modules by default
TazPuppy has complete set of kernel modules which the kernel version was fairly recent.

Also the latest TazPuppy includes the complete set of xorg-drivers, mesa, and llvm which makes the main sfs bigger.

If you have a good internet connection. You can build a smaller version of TazPuppy by using the build kit tools which I provided which was very easy to use.

Download the tazpuppy build kit. Link is on the first page of this page.

Boot puppy.

Load devx sfs modules if possible.

Get the puppy iso cd.

Extract the build kit

Edit essential-packages.txt (the list of packages that you want to be included on TazPuppy)

Edit post-install-remove.txt (for the extra packages to be removed after installing the essential packages)

Run make-tazpup.sh and follow instructions.
