That is actually the same file.

/bin/ is now a symbolic link to /usr/bin/

So what is in /bin/ is actually what is in /usr/bin

I think that two packages of gdmap were installed accidentally.

No it is what I said is going on.

Many files will show up this way in Pfind.

Pfind is showing for location, if you look in different directories, of the Linux file system.

But if you navigate to /bin/ and click on it to see what is in it.

It is symbolic link, that takes you to /usr/bin/ to actually see the files, but Rox will indicate you are looking in /bin/

That is how directory symbolic links work.

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.

Xpad doesn't work - at least for me

Bookwormpup64_10.0.10 is delivered with Xpad.5.4.
The call about the menu does not lead to any reaction.

Run in Terminal brings the error message:
# xpad
XPAD: Error While Loading Shared Libraries: Libgtkview-3.0.SO.1: Cannot Open Shared Object File: No Such File Or Directory
#

libgtkview- 3.0.so.1.8.0 as well as the link libgtkview-3.0.so.1 from Bookwormpup64_10.0.8 copied and XPAD works as expected.

APT Install XPAD in Bookwormpup64_10.0.10 brings the version 5.8.0-1 and a lot of other .Deb packages are installed;

libayatana appindicator3-1_0.92-1_amd64.deb
libayatana id3-0.4-0.9.3-1_amd64.deb
libayatana indicator3-7_0.9.3-1_amd64.deb
Libdbusmenu-GTK3-4_18.10.20180917 ~ BZR492+Repack1-3_AMD64.deb
libgtkview-4-0_4.8.4-4_amd64.deb
libgtkview-4-common_4.8.4-4_all.deb
xpad_5.8.0-1_amd64.deb

Run in Terminal brings the error message:
# xpad
(XPAD: 8780): GDK-Critical **: 15: 41: 45.512: gdk_window_thaw_toplevel_updates: Association 'Window-> Update_and_Descendants_Freeze_Count> 0' Failed

Xpad can be called up by the menu
However, settings in Preferences/ Tray/ Tray Left Mouse Click Behavior are ignored.
For example, the selection: Toggle Show all does nothing, it is always carried out: List of pads

Bookwormpup64_10.0.10 Frugal installed, no other changes

@fr-ke

Xpad 5.8 is unstable in BW64, so we use Xpad 5.4.

In prior point releases of BW64 the CherryTree installation provided the libgtksourceview-3.0 dependency required also by Xpad 5.4. However, CherryTree 1.2.0 replaced libgtksourceviewmm3 with libgtksourceview4, and now Xpad 5.4 fails to load in BW64 10.0.10 because libgtksourceviewmm3 is missing.

This will be fixed in the next point release of BW64, but for now the following should install the requisite libgtksourceviewmm3 dependency for Xpad 5.4.

apt update && apt install libgtksourceview-3.0-1

New upload of BookwormPup64_10.0.10

New ibiblio BookwormPup64_10.0.10.iso date: 2025-Feb-13 17:59:19

• includes all Xpad dependencies
• ibiblio download available now
• nluug and aarnet download mirrors should sync within 24 hr

Version number (10.0.10) has not changed because the time interval since the first upload is minimal, and only a few prior downloads.

The devx and kernel_source sfs files have not changed.

Sorry for any inconvenience !

I'd just downloaded/updated prior to fr-ke reporting the issue. Just now seeing that a reload was necessary. In between I've been out moving another foot (30 cm) of snow. All seemd good. Oh well, just need to download and replace the puppy_*.sfs.

I re-downloaded the updated BookwormPup64_10.0.10.iso. The previous version booted and ran OK. This latest version won't boot on my Asus laptop Ryzen 5800H. The boot now won't start X, either booting with my save folder, or utilizing pfix=ram. I deleted the original version, so can't go back to that version. I updated to keep in line with the official version. I changed all components in my install from the iso image. I don't use xpad, so in hindsight should have kept the original version. I checked the md5sum, which was correct.

Edit: I was originally booting with one of Ozsouth's 6.12.7 usrmerge kernels, it booted the original version of BWP64_10.0.10, but not the replacement. I reverted to the included 6.1.124, my install now boots without issue.

Thanks Radky for your continued development of BookwormPup64 and to those who have contributed and assisted.

Terry,

I can't recall if your Ryzen 5800H laptop failed to boot with older iterations of the 6.1.X kernel but thanks for confirming it boots without issue using the stock 6.1.124 kernel of BW64 10.0.10. Maybe this recent kernel update provides improved support for your specific hardware.

 Really nice work, radky. Very solid OS upon which it was fairly easy to flesh-out with my favorites. Thanks alot. :D

I still don't like how SFS-Loads works. So dropped my trusty LibreOffice-7.3.2.SFS in favor of MikeWalsh's LibreOffice-portable with Burunduk’s extra-menu pet. https://www.forum.puppylinux.com/viewto ... d61#p85684. That required that I rebuild the Ydrv which holds pets --such as masterpdfeditor-- I always want present, even if booting pfix=ram. Being able to open an odt or ods file by Right-Click is much more convenient than having to use the Menu and browse to it; and the old Ydrv had a Right-Click LibreOffice module which conflicted with the portable's Right-Click system. Didn't take much time as I store applications I may want in future updates/other Puppies.

For anyone interested, I've built a GoldenDict application which works on my BW64. The problem with the version you can obtain via apt/synaptic is that it will only run as spot. The collection of documents my GoldenDicts use when compressed to a tar.gz is 134 Mb, estimated uncompressed= 335 Mb: best housed on /mnt/home. Wait a while, I'll have to do some uploads. Eventually you'll find a link to them here, viewtopic.php?p=142876#p142876

I did a frugal install of BookwormPup64 10.0.10
and noticed two things.

1) Samba simple app manager by default makes the share folder to /mnt/home
however this does not exist at the time of first bootup

slacko.jpg
slacko.jpg (26.69 KiB) Viewed 2002 times

2) On first boot there is a message that is misleading.
A network has been detected not an internet connection.
I don't have an internet connection at my home but I do have a home network setup.

Hello @don570. :goodpost:

What a discovery. I'm betting that bug has been around since @01micko added the utility years ago. (guessing) Hoepfully the WoofCE developers spot this post from you.

Great find!

@radky
This versions, v10010 performs outstanding. Booted, pristine, via Ventoy on bare-metal. It has a plethora of admin utilities...THANKS
Next, Installing nvidia adapter support soon with a report to follow.

Edit: "tldr" error seems related to when Synaptic update is run on the test PC. Earlier report of bug removed.

@bigpup did you have any issue getting your nvidia driver to install-operate on this BKWP64 v10010?

I cannot get it to run even as Synaptic seemingly installs without error messages on a pristine boot with save-restore of session on reboot. Only driver that will start desktop via console is 'vesa'; namely not 'nvidia' nor 'nv'???

About Samba having /mnt/home selected as the default location.

That is more of a suggestion as to what to use.
The location can easily still be changed.

Normal operation of Puppy is making and using a save.
As soon as a save is made and boot using it.
/mnt/home will be in the operating file system.

/mnt/home is always the partition the save is stored on.

If you are going to run without using a save.
You will need to understand that /mnt/home is not going to be a select-able location.

Have not tried it yet in a fresh install.

Have to see what it does for me.

I used an old save from v10.0.9 that had the Nvida driver package installed in it.
It updated to the different kernel and just works.
I think DKMS process handled the change to different kernel.

The location can easily still be changed.

When a savefile or folder is created /mnt/home is created so Samba simple manager
can use this folder

I tried a fresh clean install of BookwormPup64 10.0.10

First thing I did was make a save and booted using it.

Installed and setup the Nvidia driver the way it says in this topics first post:
viewtopic.php?t=12685

It does get to a point where you see this:

Screenshot-20250224T204143.jpg
Screenshot-20250224T204143.jpg (25.94 KiB) Viewed 1514 times

you need to click on Details, so it will now look like this:

Screenshot-20250224T204047.jpg
Screenshot-20250224T204047.jpg (52.17 KiB) Viewed 1514 times

.
To get it to continue you need to click on the blue OK.

Then it will show what is happening and when it finishes.

This is when it is informing about making the kernel modules for the specific kernel in v10.0.10

Do a reboot and run xorgwizard to manually set it to use nvidia driver.

This worked for me!

Thanks @bigpup, but the BKWP64 v10010 distro on this PC is not booting with anything other than its pristine 'modeset' driver)

@Clarity

Is this a frugal install?

The kbuild-6.1.124.sfs is in the frugal install and you see it getting loaded in the boot up information?

Did you first make a save and boot using it?

Did you do all the steps shown in this topic first post?
viewtopic.php?t=12685
Are your sure?

Did you download and install the nvidia-settings program?

the save is getting updated with the changes?

Did you do all of this before trying to reboot?

Does it now boot to a point where it has to have xorgwizard run and you select to use the nvida driver, by typing the name nvidia into the driver selection?

If you are sure you did all this correctly.

My next best option would be to do a fresh new download of the BookwormPup64 10.0.10 ISO
A completely new frugal install using this ISO.

Are we having fun yet?

OK,OK, I'm only running Bookwormpup64 10.0.3 still as its pretty flawless for my needs, but hats off to the developer(s).

For the first time in a long while I needed to play a youtube into my flatscreen TV via HDMI, from a newer laptop. It was the first time it has been used in this situation.

Pulseaudio made it easy to direct the audio output to HDMI.
Menu --> Desktop --> Display Control made it easy to match the laptop resolution to the TV screen resolution. A great utility.

What a great OS !!

Wine was developed in the early days of Linux's becoming popular. At that time there wasn't much Linux 'real-world applications' --things for performing real-world tasks. Wine was almost essential if you wanted to do something beyond running a web-browser and an office suite. Linux has come a long way since then. Unless you need a program specifically created for a particular business activity you will usually find a Linux application as good, sometimes better, that can do the job. [And whether complex business programs created for Windows will run under Wine is a gamble.] So, the first place I look for applications which aren't 'built-in' is "Additional Software", viewforum.php?f=7. The second place is the list of hits produced when I enter "Ubuntu My-Desired-Application" --e.g. Ubuntu Video Editors-- in a Google Search box. [Ubuntu because the billionaire Mark Shuttleworth, the driving force behind Ubuntu, desires that it compete with Windows whenever practical: Concentrate on deploying resources to the development of the most commonly desired applications, using open-source debian applications whenever possible].

Before trying to otherwise solve the potential problem of running both 32-and-64 bit Windows programs, let us know if specifying wine32 and Wine64 via the Right-Click GUI works. After all, the Wine application is supposed to be able to run both.
If not, there are possible [and perhaps complicated] work-arounds. As you are running BookwormPup64, perhaps this might be the easiest: Use Synaptic to install* PlayOnLinux. https://wiki.playonlinux.com/index.php/Main_Page. I installed it one time under some Linux (LinuxMint?). As I recall, it actually enabled me to download several versions of Wine, each creating its own prefix for each (or several?) Windows programs. Its menu enabled me to choose which to run.

* Here the current prior use of Portable-Wine avoids problems: Run the 'Wine-Remove' and 'menuremove' scripts in order to 'remove' the symlinks and menu-entries they created so as to avoid any conflicts they might pose. Retain the Portable-Wine folder until you're satisfied with PlayOnLinux.

Thanks for the detailed reply mike, sorry i took so long to reply! Thing is a lot of us have "classic" win32 apps we want to still be able to run, particularly old compilers (going back all the way to DOS) and for music (trackers, softsynths, rebirth etc) there are similar modern programs, but not exactly the same.
Stuff tends to break in modern windows, so people increasingly look to open source to keep running this old stuff..

i have been running portable wine for 64bit, and an old xenial pup32bit with wine32 on it too. I can probably sort out something better. I will try some of things you mention, there is a learning curve with some of it..

So, there are no "32bit compatibility libs" for bookworm64?

Now, just a little change of topic -
I want to build my little open source game of mine for bookworm64:

It runs ok on 32bit pups:

But I couldnt get sdl2 to build for bookworm64 or any 64 bit pup. I get this error on make;

Building SDL2-2.30.12
./configure
(runs ok)
make

/bin/sh ./build-scripts//updaterev.sh --vendor ""
make: *** No rule to make target '/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/dbus-1.0/include/dbus/dbus-arch-deps.h', needed by 'build/SDL.lo'. Stop.

Anyone else tried building sdl2? I wonder if its worth adding sdl3 to the devx sfs..

Edit: solved, sdl2 now building ok, added bookworm64 version "sconnex-linux64.elf" to: https://github.com/orac81/miniapples/r ... latest.zip
