Dell E6400 Latitude, bios A27, 4Gb Ram. Limine boot loader.
Updated Daedalus 6.5 to 6.5.3
Updated Scarthgap 6.5 to 6.5.3
No issues with any of them.

BarryK, I really enjoy the Daedalus, it gives me the same feeling as the classic Puppys did/do. I am not yet very comfortable with the use of containers, Flatpacks and Appimages, but the Daedalus gives me the opportunity to choose whether to use them or not, that option is the main advantage for me. Thank you!

Alfons reported that X11 apps do not start in containers.
This includes ycalc and rubix.

The error message is "cannot load font".
The Xephyr nested server cannot find the .pcf fonts.
I have posted about this to the blog, with a fix:

https://bkhome.org/news/202501/fix-run- ... iners.html

Interestingly, lite-xl text editor also fails to start in a container.
It uses SDL, but needs to load a .pcf font.

Alfons reported this a few weeks ago.
Sometimes it takes me awhile to get around to implementing a fix.

I have to correct my last post; LibreOffice Writer has collapsed after update to Daedalus 6.5.3, the other LibreOffice sections seem to work. Writer opens an empty window, no menus, no nothing. Is there a Writer config file somewhere? I have difficulties finding one.

I have lots of old .abw files, so I would have preferred to have good old Abiword, but installing it demands a zillion dependencies, and fill up 61Mb of otherwise useful space.

Question: In /usr/share/ModemManager/ there is a file 'mm-foxconn-t77w968-carrier-mapping', what is that doing?

I am running Daedalus right now, updated from 6.5 to 6.5.3, and LO Writer is running OK.

Try start in a terminal, see if any messages:

BarryK, thank you! I don't know what kind of magic wand you swung from a place on the other side of the world, but now LO Writer open and run as it should. I have no idea why it did no start after several attempts earlier, I have done nothing. Maybe test running the rest of LO functions triggered something.
I also installed Abiword, and it runs as intended. The simpler Abi format suits me better, LibreOffice is a bit overwhelming in it's complexity, when I only need a tad more options than I get in Geany.
Do you have any idea about purpose of that strange file in /usr/share/ModemManager/?

@BarryK
I just installed Calibre in Daedalus container 6.5.1.1 but couldn't open any .epub file, getting instead this error:
qt.core.plugin.loader: In /usr/lib/qt5/plugins/platforms/libqvnc.so: Plugin uses incompatible Qt library (5.15.0)
Calibre works well in Scarthcap main OS.
Thanks for all your work

I just did my update / upgrade from 6.5.3 version to 6.5.4 version and all went without a hitch, cough, spit, or sputter. :thumbup2:

My install is a frugal install on a PNY 16GB 2.0 usb flash drive.

So far everything I've used works. :thumbup2:

Thanks Barry K. :)

For Me - Same Old Story - Still Stymied

Post by myke »

The update did not help me at all. I still can't set up firefox_68.7-esr-buster_amd64.sfs so that I can copy files from files/shared, which I want to do to work with my personal Tiddlywiki file that requires the add-on that is also in that directory. I want to work in the container so that I can stop internet access within that container.

So, while I can access these files within the buster container itself I am unable to either download this firefox as a pet - not available - or download it as an sfs within the buster container and insert it as Main within that container or download it fron daedalus and insert it as an extra layer within the buster container from Dadaelus.

In easy Daedalus 6.5.4.1, I installed the buster container. Then I installed the firefox-esr sfs as a new container (not in existing)

In /mnt/wkg/containers/firefox/configuration, I changed the line 24

EC_ACCESS_FOLDER_PATH='/home/shared'

into

EC_ACCESS_FOLDER_PATH='/files/shared'

so the firefox container can access to the /files/shared directory

Barry K.,
Thank you immensely. I was a faithful USER of Puppy Linux for over 13 years. I was not one of those people who would try out a new version, tell you what was working or not working and then go back to Windows or some mainstream Linux distro that they actually depended on. For that period of time, I actually used and depended on Puppy Linux, and until the Xorg wizard was broken and none of the fixes worked, I updated to the latest version. I particularly liked that my work space could be separated from my Puppy space. Other Linux distros that i tried would force me to work in their space and a lot of them would break when I tried to update.

I am still a USER, this time of EasyOS, not someone who just tries out new versions and reports on what works and what doesn't. I appreciate the care taken with the updating procedure and the overall design of the distro. I did the back-door work-around, which succeeded but thought that mucking around with the innards of a configuration file was not the way for users to proceed.
Thanks again.

Hi BarryK,
I updated to Daedalus 6.5.4.2.

Eeeh, have you forgotten to fix the problem of Bluetooth and EasyShare not working? :-)

The problem is that Buster SFSs were created in 2020, and there have been structural changes since then.

Either I open up all the Buster, and other SFSs of that era, and fix them, or simply remove them.

Going forward, probably better to just remove Buster container and SFSs, as superceded by Daedalus.

Re: Easy Daedalus 6.5.4.2-dir2sfs

Post by myke »

Barry K.,
I went through the procedure to create a container with scarthgap 6.5.4.2 by downloading the latest version and going through the procedure using dir2sfs, etc. only to get an error message at the end saying the sfs created was a version that was no longer valid. Could you look into this and let me know where I erred?

Thanks,
Mike
