When JWMdesk is launched, the script checks the jwmrc-personal configuration file for either modern or legacy jwm code syntax pertaining to the display of virtual desktops. If the code is missing or corrupt, this option will not appear in the JWMdesk gui.

Almost ALL desktop PCs (and many laptops too) have processors that are VM capable. Each of you know the value of VM being turned on when KVM processing benefits the VM performacne. This is presented to you, as each of you KNOW the value of the following.

@Norgo has built a utility some time ago that not only exposes, but also turns on the VM support that the PC has. It is named "qemu_ready". It is intelligent while also tiny.

This utility is NOT one that comes with QEMU packaging, officially; even as its usefulness for VM is apparent.

Since its tiny, I propose that it be included in the system builds such that when QEMU is installed, the utility is present. Further if included, there 'could' be utility allowing users to activate it via the system Menu.

If this is reasonable, it will show up in future versions thru your WoofCE efforts.

@radky - modules init file is: dpupbw64initmodules.txt (in same folder as puppy .sfs). By making that file with just (the word) coretemp in it & rebooting, temperature taskbar display now works for me (with my 6.6.47 kernel installed). If there were other modules, would be comma separated.

If I understand correctly (for frugal installs) Puppy creates *initmodules.txt during the creation of the save area. ... The *initmodules.txt file contains a comma-delimited list of kernel modules which support input devices (wireless keyboards) that must load early in the boot process. I'm not sure about the suitability of *initmodules.txt for early loading of other kernel modules (such as coretemp.ko) which typically load via modprobe.

@radky - absolutely correct if you intend to install. That was a shorthand hack I used to illustrate a possibility for just running live. A ydrv including a small script with modprobe coretemp, in /root/Startup would be the correct procedure. I should have specified that.

About "...initmodules.txt":

It is automatically created if the first boot resulted in any loaded modules that are likely to be needed by the keyboard.
It's created as a file in /tmp at about the same time as QuichSetup is run.
It is then copied to the the save location by rc.shutdown towards the end of first shutdown processing.
Note: The save location is not always the same as the install location, so the "...initmodules.txt" file might not be in the same directory as the puppy...sfs file.

It can be generated manually via Menu->System->Boot manager->Modules->Load the specified module(s) early in the boot process.

While this "workaround" is designed to enable a working keyboard during subsequent boots,
the 'init' script will load any module, provided it exists.

Forum members rockedge and smokey01 have been very gracious in providing access to their servers for quick access to the BW64 iso and associated files. Thank you rockedge and smokey01 for this service to the Puppy community !

However high bandwidth usage of these servers for iso downloads may exceed restrictions defined by the terms and conditions of the upstream hosting service. Rockedge's upstream hosting service has recently imposed severe restrictions on his use of the server, though (for now) BW64 downloads are still available.

At smokey01's server, transfers are now intermittently throttled (0.62 KB/s). Consequently, this supplemental server is no longer suitable for high bandwidth downloads of the BW64 iso, and this option is now removed from the first page of the BW64 forum thread. Continued high bandwidth usage of this server may result in the loss of my access privileges.

Soon, the BW64 files will be transferred to a larger (high-capacity) hosting service, and this should provide necessary relief for rockedge and smokey01.

There are several ways to do this.

Assuming we are talking about a frugal install on some type of drive.

Download the BookwormPup64 10.0.8 ISO.

Do a completely new frugal install using this 10.0.8 ISO.

Note:
The main Frugalpup Installer, that is in BookwormPup64 10.0.7, can do the install, and update the boot loader, for booting the new 10.0.8 install.

Copy the old BookwormPup64 save you used in 10.0.7 into the 10.0.8 frugal install.

Now boot 10.0.8 and it should have all the settings and stuff you had added to 10.0.7.

Only stuff that would not still work is anything that is kernel specific software. It will have to be reinstalled for the different kernel that is in 10.0.8

This is safest way, because you still have the 10.0.7 working install, if something goes wrong. Later it can be deleted if you no longer want it.

A manual way.

This is best done by booting something other than the 10.0.7 install you are trying to update.
So it is not being used as you do this file replacement.

Open the 10.0.8 ISO in Rox file manager showing the contents.

Replace all the files in the 10.0.7 frugal install with the files that are in the 10.0.8 ISO.

Would you not achieve the same effect by simply swapping the adrv, bdrv, fdrv, base Puppy SFS and the initrd.gz? No need to touch the zdrv, vmlinuz or kbuild SFS; if the kernel's functioning OK with your hardware, why bother upgrading just for the sake of a few 'point release' numbers? This IS an LTS kernel, after all....

Do you mean you have a Intel Raptor Lake-U cpu?

To identify your on-board Intel gfx enter this in terminal

lspci -k |grep -EA3 'VGA|3D|Display'

This should state if it is UHD or Iris Xe

Or you can use a portable app provided by mikewalsh here:

To find out the supported resolutions of your monitor enter in terminal

xrandr -q

If your chosen resolution is available, then again in terminal

xrandr -s 1920x1200

I do not use Ventoy myself.

I found this online

Adjust the resolution

In Ventoy' main menu, use F5 Tools --> Resolution Configuration to adjust the Resolution, and then boot the ISO file.

In most cases, choosing a smaller resolution will be better, for example 800x600x16 800x600x32 1024x768x32

Even changing the resolution in Ventoy didn't change what came up.

I have a frugal install of Bookworm on a usb stick.
Trying this brings up the full resolution of 1920x1200.
But the Display Settings app doesn't allow changing to anything else.
I tried the commands you gave, but it tells me any other size is unavailable.

So Bookworm is capable of the highest resolution, but so far can't change to another resolution.
I wonder why.

I am confused now.

Are you using Ventoy to boot up your BookWorm OS?

Is this an ISO booting up? (...............ISO/WIM/IMG/VHD(x)/EFI)

Ventoy uses it's own settings and these are restricted to a few resolutions. AFAIK you can change the theme resolution to whatever you want.

To edit this you would need to change the JSON file via the Plugin Editor

As I mentioned above, I tried changing the resolution in Ventoy.
It acted like it would, but once Bookworm came up it went back to the low resolution of 800x600 75Hz.

So I tried my frugal installed (instead of the Ventoy iso) usb stick which came up with the max resolution of 1920x1200 but not capable of change.
So the information I listed that @bigpup asked for is from that boot up.

Xorg was unable to find a proper driver for your new hardware and reverted to vesa graphics mode. You need a newer Puppy.

Using the vesa driver is the problem.

This new Intel graphics hardware seems to not have a intel driver for it in BookwormPup64 10.0.8.

Have not found any good info on getting the correct driver installed and working.

May have to wait for a newer kernel and firmware getting into a newer version of BookwormPup64 or some other Puppy Linux version.

People in other Linux OS's are having the same issue.
