yes, odd hyphens
my guess is the locale on the system you are making edits with to menu.lst is giving trouble.

if the first stanza works, reboot and choose edit while in bootloader.
use the grub edit function to work out the changes to directory names, ie easyos to easyda in each place needed.
the edit will be effective for one boot attempt and will not change the actual menu.lst

once you have the needed edits at hand, copy and paste a new stanza in menu.lst and make the approiate changes

I'm building 6.3.91 right now, will probably upload it in a few hours.

It has a lot of fixes, except two outstanding:

1. update PKGget database
2. aplay utility broken

For 1, /usr/local/debdb2pupdb utility is broken. I need more time to look at why.
Number 2, reported by don570, is very odd. paplay works.

I want to get 6.3.91 out now, as it fixes so many other things.

Built 6.3.91 late last night, but then discovered ff update still broken.
Using recent ca-certificates pkg, so was getting very frustrated.
Got up this morning, took a fresh look...

discovered that /etc/ssl/ca-certificates.conf is very old -- 2013
that file is in ca-certificates pkg but was getting overwritten by old file.
Fixed, building 6.3.91 again.

You could just name the folders "scarthgap" and "daedalus".

Or, a folder hierarchy:
Folder "easyos"
and inside that, "scarthgap" and "daedalus"

So wkg_dir=easyos/daedalus"
and "wkg_dir=easyos/scarthgap"

Have uploaded 6.3.91

Only the .delta difference file, so you need to have easy-6.3.90-amd64.img file at /mnt/wkg

Then click on "update" icon. The .delta file is 48MB.

I tested firefox update, ran "ff-dl-update" in a terminal so as to see any error messages.
Worked, updated to ff 131.x

However, a manual fix is required, as easy.sfs was built with the "esr" version of ff and in /usr/lib/firefox-esr
whereas the update went into /usr/lib/firefox

To fix it, edit /usr/bin/firefox.bin0, change the line

Code: Select all

exec firefox-esr "$@"

to:

Code: Select all

exec /usr/lib/firefox/firefox "$@"

That will get fixed soon.

6.3.91 has SolveSpace and Audacious, as well as many fixes.
Not those items 1 and 2 yet.

The strings command indicates references to debian in debdb2pupdb
And there is no reference to woof-debdb.in that which should probably be used by debdb2pupdb

# strings /usr/local/petget/debdb2pupdb | grep debian

@File /tmp/debget/debian-pkgs-db does not exist

Installed together with scarthgap

Post by pp4mnklinux »

Hello everybody:

Now on travelling, but my "problem" was solved.

Scarthgap and Daedalus had been installed at the same partición, menu.lst ready and I'm ready to test EasyDaedalus.

I will write about "how to..." but I'm happy, update worked and running Easy Daedalus 6.3.91 (6.4 RC1)

Thanks for this project @BarryK

Not those items 1 and 2 yet.

I report that the update only works if the original image file is present on /mnt/wkg and it is also called exactly easy-6.3.90-amd64.img . If the name of the file is anyway different (for example: easy-6.3.90-Daedalus-amd64.img), the update script will fail.

I'm also reporting a more important problem occurring on KDE Dolphin after the update to 6.3.91: the management of programs and associations between file extensions and programs gets broken. If you do right mouse click --> open with on any file, the list of installed applications to choose from will be totally empty. This feature is a crucial for the usefulness of the file manager (especially on a Linux system).

This was absolutely normal on Scarthgap, where Dolphin was installed as a foreign application. To fix that, I've always had to simply uninstall and re-install the 3 packages:

- libkf5service5_5.103.0-1
- libkf5service-data_5.103.0-1
- libkf5service-bin_5.103.0-1

But now, on Daedalus, they can't be neither uninstalled nor reinstalled. To repeat the whole installation of KDE Dolphin from start wouldn't be nice.
The phaenomenon is strange on Daealus, since being the Devuan repository the system repository, Devuan applications should be treated as system applications. It shouldn't be too hard to fix but it looks like KDE Dolphin doesn't like anyway the system update procedure.

I'm working on it. It looks to be a widespread issue on many distributions. Any help is appreciated.

KDE Dolphin 22 - Program list diappeared after update to Easy Daedalus 6.3.91

Post by Federico »

OK, problem solved in the following way.

1) Download the package libkf5service-data_5.103.0-1_all.deb from the Debian repo and put it somewhere.
2) Open it with XArchive using ROX Filer or any other file manager.
3) Select the file kf5-applications.menu and extract it onto the folder /etc/xdg/menus
4) When you are ready, run on Sakura the following command:

Code: Select all

# kbuildsycoca5 --noincremental
kbuildsycoca5 running...
#

Now all the (long) list of programs should be back on the KDE Dolphin contextual manu.

This may be considered as a temporary solution (since for some reason some Dolphin configuration files do disappear after a system update).

To allow the reinstallation of a package you have previously installed, you need to remove the entry of this package in /root/.packages/user-installed-packages.

Thank you. This could also be considered as a temporary solution... but, as long as this procedure isn't needed on Scarthgap, the situation isn't exactly good at the moment, since if KDE apps are installable from the Daedalus repo, the system update shouldn't mess up with them in any way. Otherwise... it won't be better than working with foreign packages on systems with smaller / limited repos.

From my point of view, nothing is more important than the KDE apps, not because I'm obsessed with them, but just because there's nothing better on Linux (and I'm not going to use worse / more shoddy software pieces). Rebus sic stantibus, a way to adapt the update procedure to the presence of the KDE apps should be found, since they have been the main reason for the repository to be enlarged, imo.

Thanks for your report.
For the benefit of readers your issue is with the optional pet
( startup_welcome_alert_for_EasyOS-2023MK3 ) which you have installed.

That pet can can be found here https://forum.puppylinux.com/viewtopic. ... 851#p83851

and has worked fine in all previous versions of EasyOS up to and including Scarthgap.

The lack of a desktop display is due to a missing item ( libnotify-bin_0.8.1-1 ) which is
needed by the command notify-send and processes the comand and any options for the notification daemon
which is present and running.

It is available in PKGget and installing it will fix the display issue.

There is also another issue with the version of translate-shell (0.9.7.1) in that whilst it appears to
be the most recent version it contains a bug that was fixed many years ago, That bug causes gawk
errors to appear in the launcher script.

Fortunately there is a pet-noarch version of translate-shell-0.9.7.1 which does not contain the bug
available in PKGget Package Manager
Installing that over the built in woof version fixes the gawk issue.

I would suggest upgrading to 6.3.92 before installing these 2 items to save having to repeat
their installation.

@BarryK Please consider making the above changes in your next release.

Updated to 6.3.92. The menu was emptied again and I had to repeat the procedure above. Once used to it that's not too annoying: it didn't take up more than 2 minutes.

aplay

Still using Easy Daedalus 6.3.90

-Script pclock --> I switched aplay to paplay where it was mentioned twice
and pclock now did a countdown properly

-I figured out why 'blkid' didn't list the partitions ---> I was clicking on wrong terminal icon
lying on desktop. There are two terminal icons on desktop. I was clicking on the container terminal.
The system terminal does work properly

6.3.92 - Network Applet unresponsive / disappearing

Post by Federico »

I noticed that the network applet only appears after several minutes after the system has fully booted. Sometimes it becomes unresponsive or disappears completely for several minutes and then it reappears again.
As long as it isn't showing, the network connection keeps on working, but it isn't possible to disconnect it or to connect to other networks or to check signal strength etc...
This did not happen on 6.3.90 and 6.3.91 as far as I could notice.

Hi @BarryK ,
I have tried to get my local printer to work via USB but it fails with no useful info at /var/log/cups/error_log.

So I tried BookwormPup64-10.0.7 and that works fine - same printer-driver-splix version.
But BookwormPup64 was more chattering at /var/log/cups/error_log while reporting success.

Installing that over the built in woof version fixes the gawk issue.

I would suggest upgrading to 6.3.92 before installing these 2 items to save having to repeat
their installation.

@BarryK Please consider making the above changes in your next release.

@ETP
Thanks for reporting. I have added libnotify-bin to the package list.

trans is included in gxlat pet package, a language translation gui, created by vovchik, in the old forum.

Does gxlat still work with the newer 'trans' script?
...it is in the "Document" menu category.

Updated to D 6.3.92 . Alone on internal 256 gb Samsung HD on L390 yoga. No worries except install failed to find delta which has been common occurrence with me.
Dragging Brave icon and Vivaldi to desktop doesn't start them, just brings rox file and icon up on screen to press and when i hit it it brings up a box wanting to add it to a keyring as a default and a password. Box repeats when trying to get out of it before Brave starts.
Putting the racehorse Scarthgap on new HP 256 gb USB. Getting speed reading 2 with Daedalus on internal and 2 on 3.2 USB. Will disable journalling.

thx Barry and all for your work. I learn a bit every day of addressing own chores and editing.

Easy Daedalus 6.3.92 - bug with PKGGET

Post by Caramel »

Still a small bug in PKGGET.

The option" Download only" of a deb file do not work

The only option is download from a local repository

The corresponding code is in /usr/local/petget/downloadpkgs.sh in the part DEPS_DIALOG (line 147 and following, in particular line 156)

I updated to 6.3.92.
Thanks for the development of EasyOS Daedalus.

Still, the login and security manager does not work. I haven't been able to switch Firefox from non-root to root.

I use these commands to run Firefox as root:
# /usr/lib/firefox-esr/firefox-esr (the one included in the easy.sfs)
# /usr/lib/firefox/firefox (The downloaded newest version)

I suggest that the update policy should be limited to either ESR or the ordinary version, because they create their profile directory separately.

You might need to clean the installation.
Menu "Shutdown -> Rectify -> Reboot, with rollback"
Then click the "Rollback to pristine first-boot"
Their will be a further window to retain some things, such as network setup.

The problem is that the Debian repository only has the ESR version, so that's what have to build easy.sfs with.

To change ff to run as root, edit /usr/share/applications/firefox.desktop, change this line to:

Code: Select all

Exec=firefox.bin0

Did you install Vivaldi via the "Download latest Vivaldi" menu entry?

Then, I think you dragged the wrong thing onto the desktop.
You need to open /home/vivaldi in rox-filer then drag the icon onto the desktop.

So, maybe you dragged /home/vivaldi onto the desktop, instead of /home/vivaldi/vivaldi

Hi @BarryK , for the next revision, EVIDENCE (as default pdf reader) doesn't work for me.

Association didn't work (to open pdf files as default program) and running it directly from Applications folder didn't work.

It has easy solution but only to consider.

Have a nice day u all.

Running 6.3.92, I have installed Dolphin.

Opened folder /usr/share/examples/text, right-clicked on testdoc.doc, also tried /usr/share/examples/spreadsheets, right-clicked on Sample.xls

It doesn't automatically pick up apps available to open that mime-type. For testdoc.doc, I entered "swriter" and then it opened and is remembered.

1. First question, is it possible to get Dolphin to automatically offer a choice of appropriate apps to open the file?

2. Secondly, are you saying that after updating, a choice that I have made, for example .doc files opened by swriter, will be lost?

EDIT:
I have found that Dolphin stores file associations in /root/.config/mimeapps.list

Interesting. So, if I pre-populate that file with all file associations, then Dolphin will read that.
I will try that.

Thanks @BarryK for the answer. I found the cause (a modified file in /root/.packages)

New problem - New install of EasyOS 6.3.92

It seems some packages are not completely installed.
2 examples :
libasound2-dev is on the list of layers-installed packages but the files are not in EasyOS after the first boot. Maybe it's because it's a dev package?
And the directory /usr/share/alsa/init from the package alsa-utils do not exist either
