parents directories is the right term ,not folders ,my bad ,if it confused some !
And just for learning purpose ,can someone explain what occuring now ,as it worked before ?
So sorry i cannot in time pinpoint the exact moment it started to go wrong !!!
This drive does have partitions with different fs ,vfat, ntfs ,ext2+qcow in it & ext4 ,
and yes , some have been pretty full ,did had to make ''space'' just to update easyos that keep all revisions ,which is ,a memory hungry ,but ,could ease some ,if not used to marvelous frugal option install way to do .
This ssd does ''passed'' smartmontools health tests ,it says ...
I will give it a shot with 5.6.2 on an external ext4 drive and share result !!
I guess that is a price to pay ,to have non coders users ,calling a distro ''easy'' !!!
and big Thank you for keeping your cool + all your works BK .

Post by don570 »

EasyOS Kirkstone-series version 5.6.3

I did a check with latest Blender 4 download
and latest nvidia SFS
https://distro.ibiblio.org/easyos/amd64 ... _amd64.sfs

Disabled networking with tray icon and used SFS get app
since I don't have home internet.

I checked Blender 4
and everything works so far.

nvidia SFS and setting keyboard layout to french

Post by don570 »

EasyOS Kirkstone-series version 5.6.3

There is one problem with boot time init.rc script that I stumbled upon.
----> Changing a keyboard layout when the desktop is running i.e. X server is running
The problem is that I don't think this is possible if the nvidia proprietary video driver is in use.

Here's the procedure to duplicate problem.
I want to change keyboard layout from 'us' to 'fr'

Start menu > Setup > Mouse/keyboard Wizard
keyboard layout for country
I selected french 'fr'
The app recommends to restart X
Start menu > Rectify > Restart X server

I went to black screen console --> french azerty keyboard is in use by console.
I typed 'xwin' but that was ignored
Screen suggested xorgwizard but I was afraid that would change my xorg.conf file
So I typed 'reboot'

I rebooted with nvidia driver but no french azerty keyboard

/etc/keymap file has 'us'

I went to mouse/keyboard wizard again
I choose 'fr' layout again
/etc/keymap is fr
restart X
Start menu > Rectify > Restart X server
x failed to start
xwin did nothing so I typed 'reboot'
booted to a black screen

In desperation I typed 'xorgwizard' and chose nvidia proprietary driver.
To my surprise it works perfectly.
I typed 'xwin' and this allowed me to get to desktop using nvidia driver
however keyboard was set to 'us' again

Is it possible to set a keyboard layout other than 'us' when nvidia proprietary video driver is chosen???

Vverve ,
I have made some changes that will hopefully fix your problem with /etc/keymap containing "us", and xvkbd being wrong layout:

https://bkhome.org/news/202311/trying-t ... on-us.html

don570,
This might fix your problem also.

The fix will be in Easy 5.6.4, coming soon.

I went ahead and did a clean frugal install to a USB stick just for the hell of it and so far all is well.
I went ahead and enabled Hardware Acceleration as I've never a problem with it in Chromium.

Thanks for the new Easy OS @BarryK.

PS
I have some newer desktops that have amd a8 apu processor and amd a10 apu processor and for some reason the cpu temp tray doesn't display.

It has always worked OOTB on Intel processors.

No big deal just curious.

Can't post no specs at the moment because I have the desktop apart.

Thanks. :)

Booted to desktop via launch from Ventoy. Thanks for Chrommium!

Couple of cli commands did not work. Maybe I'm doing something wrong. For example swapon --show

Which/where instructions for loading nvidia driver?
I have scoured Easy's Menu and the Desktop for some hint. But unsucessfully seeing steps for this version.
Edit: Found it buried in SFSGET Utility after its Repo update.

Some system specs and it appears to no be able to find any sensors.
I have seen this before with other computers that just don't have sensors.
I guess this is one of them anyway everything works seems strange though but I'm not going to worry about it.

5.6.4 updated from .3 ,all good .
Lost right-click.pet rox choices ,reinstalling fix it !
Did not removed my xvkbd fix for keyboard layout , as a test ,i will do it eventually and come back with it .

Bk ,one question :
,frugal install here ,
is saving session thru ''save'' dialog historicaly always created a .session-transit and only save at reboot?
would a ''save now'' option ,without having to write one more file( .session-transit here) to disk be add?
Knowing you got that choice on reboot/poweroff to save or not ,ok ,but lets say ,i dont need to save rest of the session, just those first changes ,
optimizing unnecessary writing .
Note; i do ,when not too many changes(like install or uninstalling pet) write directly to .session .

Thank you for all , enjoying your work daily for all purposes !!!

Oh you dear coders ...
sorry, if obvious for some and a little off topic,
but battery applet talking, since it does not work as is here.

How about a simple battery applet that invoke;
cat /sys/class/power_supply/BATT/*

Yes weird tablet here the ''BATT'' ,usually 0 or 1 , here T !!?!!

Doable ,with choices 0,1 ,T ?
with or without status deamon showing % left in tray.

Sad pupsysinfo wont verbose , trying to reverse-engineered and learn how it do it !!

On ac or battery , with or without an applet ,
see an happy user in me !!!

Thanks @BarryK

As you probably have already reviewed, your IMGs do boot to desktop via Ventoy for cursory reviews...prior to an actual committed install.

It allows navigation of the system, but some of the system seemingly misbehaves:

  • commands not working

  • installation of some apps

  • remastering anew to capture in a new image file any desktop tailoring from the review session

to name a few.

This is not a request, merely observation as others might use this path for booting similar to other IMG/ISO file bootings users do via Ventoy.

Request Boot-time message

Post by don570 »

I tried changing keyboard layout using Start menu app ' Mouse/keyboard layout'
but still got erratic results.

But I noticed that when I booted up 'fr' is in the /etc/keymap file

This nearly fooled me since I assumed that I was using the 'us' layout.

The problem is entering the Password
Knowing the keyboard layout is critical.

So I suggest that at boot-time the line for the Password should be

Code: Select all

Keyboard layout: fr Password: ********

In other words the user is reminded what keyboard layout he has chosen

uextract 4.11

Post by don570 »

I'm still working on a pet package for uextract 4.11
I have problems making right click links .
BarryK suggested links to .desktop files
so I tried the following in the pinstall.sh file

Code: Select all

ln -fs /usr/share/applications/uextract.desktop /root/.config/rox.sourceforge.net/OpenWith/.application_x-mimearchive/"MHTML Ripper"
ln -fs /usr/share/applications/uextract.desktop /root/.config/rox.sourceforge.net/OpenWith/.message_rfc822/"MHTML Ripper"
ln -fs /usr/share/applications/uextract.desktop /root/.config/rox.sourceforge.net/OpenWith/.text_html/"MHTML Ripper"

These work initially but then are erased.
Any suggestions??

Hi, I know what the cause of the problem is. Could you please confirm with the busybox lspci:

Code: Select all

# busybox lspci

See the fix in this other thread; the 'initrd' file has a fault:

viewtopic.php?p=104631#p104631

and earlier, how to fix:

viewtopic.php?p=104544#p104544

Could you please tell me something:
You had the nvidia sfs installed in 5.6.3.
After updating to 5.6.4, did you have to reinstall the nvidia sfs?

the nvidia sfs is supposed to automatically carry over to when do an update, but that code has not yet been verified to work.

Second icon in Menu

Post by don570 »

I checked what would cause a second icon to appear in start menu (see image)
and I discovered a way to duplicate the action.

I installed ptmtimer 3.4 SFS as instructed
-turn off networking at bottom of tray and run SFSget app
-I clicked on 'New' button accidentally.
I normally click on 'Existing' or 'Main' button

-I probably continued to work by using bootmanager to load the SFS in the Main window
This results in two icons - one works properly and the other doesn't

Yeah, there's a bug.

I will need some time to fix it.
Relatives from inter-state arriving today, for 4 - 5 days, so won't have much time to do any EasyOS stuff.

Yes, Ventoy is a very unnatural environment to be running Easy, and I fully expect some things to be broken.

EDIT:
I take that back. Have just now tested Easy in Ventoy, looks pretty good:

...haven't done much testing yet.
