I'm getting a problem in tahrpup with large areas of windows in some applications turning black, or occasionally grey, or sometimes into gibberish, when the window is resized.

Apparently this is quite a well-known fault in a number of Linux versions. A lot of people recommend disabling window animations, but I'm not sure how to do this.

Here are some of the suggestions I've seen, and the reasons they're not working for me.

1. Change settings in Unity Tweak Tool.

Unity Tweak Tool seems to install but doesn't open. Same goes for Gnome Tweak Tool.

2. This command is alleged to help:

gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface enable-animations false

-- then open the run window, type r and enter.

This leads only to a selection of error messages (details available on request).

3. Use dconf editor

Tried this but ticking or unticking the box didn't seem to change anything.

gconf editor doesn't seem to help either.

4. Reduce the amount of memory used by the video card.

I've no idea how to do this. I can't see anything that looks relevant in BIOS or JWM. Web searching doesn't help.

Which version of Tahrpup?

Is it Tahrpup64 6.0.5 (64 bit)?

Is it Tahrpup 6.0.5 (32 bit)?

Have you used the program Quickpet -> Info -> Tahrpup updates?
Rebooted and saved, so now all the updates are now part of Tahrpup and being used?
May have to do this several times to get all the updates.
will know when you have them all, when the completed info statement, shows nothing new, from what it showed before.

What window manager are you using?
JWM or some other one?

Anything you did or installed, just before this started or has it always done this?

It's Tahrpup64 6.0.5 (64 bit) with JWM. Frugal install on fat32 on an external SSD partitioned into two volumes.

No, I haven't used Quickpet -> Info -> Tahrpup updates.

The system was working fine on a very old Dell Optiplex 780, but on the much newer Optiplex 7040 micro I've recently bought there've been a few difficulties.

I was hoping someone would simply know how to disable window animations -- if, that is, they are enabled. I don't even know how to tell for certain if they're on or off.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to reduce the amount of memory used by the video card? (This, according to some sources, may make the animations stop.)

Alternatively, is there some other way to stop the window corruption?

In case it helps at all, the applications that are very badly affected include Gimp and Mtpaint (unusable) and Puppy Package Manager (usable but only just). Folder windows go completely black in full screen but are otherwise more or less unaffected. Most software is not affected or only slightly.

Did you look for the 'graphics settings' or 'screen settings?' I think in a lot of pups you can find picom window animations there and turn off some of the compositor features. I keep all that stuff off most of the time. Probably found in setup>settings or something similar. In fossa it's in settings>setup>screen/graphics wizard.

The Picom stuff isn't in tahrpup at all.

What I've just discovered does help quite a bit is to run 'restart graphical server' in the exit menu. Since I did that, the same window corruption still occurs, but quite a bit less, and clicking here and there, changing view settings etc., clears it even more.

Gimp and mtPaint, which had become unusable, are now probably usable again.

It would still be nice to find a complete fix for this, though.

Do you have Intel selected as your graphics driver?

I think so. xorg.conf mentions 'Driver Intel' with no further details.

If this is the computer you are trying to use Tahrpup64 9.0.5 on.
newer Optiplex 7040 micro

Tahrpup is not designed for that new a computer.
It does not have needed support software or even the newer versions that are needed.
One being the newer version of the Intel graphics driver.
Also need a much newer Linux kernel.

You need to use a much newer version of Puppy Linux.

Fossapup64 9.5

One of the newer or newest versions of Lxpupsc, Scpup, or Vanilla Dpup.

You can not mix different (a thru z)drv.sfs files between different versions of Puppy. These are built for that specific Puppy version, it is in.
The fdrv.sfs is about the only one that maybe can be used by different versions of Puppy.
That is because the fdrv.sfs is only hardware firmware, that will work with anything, as long as the Linux kernel has the needed driver, for the hardware.

I've tried Fossapup64 9.5 and it seems very buggy -- a lot of things don't work properly.

The 'hybrid' system I'm trying at the moment seems to be the lesser evil of those two. The window corruption is noticeable only in a few situations, mainly image editing. For that I can always reboot in Slax, where the Gimp 2.10 appimage seems to work fine.

(By the way, this is not what I'm having to do at the moment. I'm just preparing for the inevitable day when my old Mac mini conks out. I've tried probably 30 or 40 Linux versions, and on the whole Puppy is the least objectionable.)

I seem to have heard somewhere that there's an improved, debugged version of Fossapup in the pipeline. If it arrives, I'll try that.

As long as you're experimenting for later use, try S15Pup now at release candidate 5 from here, https://www.forum.puppylinux.com/viewto ... 034#p71034 because (a) as a general rule Slackos produced superior graphics and (b) you've reported that Slax works fine on your computer.

The above is true on my desktop and I usually run 'debian/Ubuntus'. IIRC, both the latest Gimp AppImage and MikeWalsh's portable worked well; as did several other graphics and video related applications. Indeed, I was surprised at how many portables and AppImages worked OOTB; one of the reasons I usually use 'debian/ubuntus'.

It is binary compatible with Slackware 15, so should have the drivers and firmware for your computer.

Peebee has done a terrific job creating it and some of our most experienced Devs have been and are working on perfecting it. By the time you need it that should be its condition; and from the RC transitioning to the final version is likely to take only a couple of minutes.

That is really not normal for Fossapup64 9.5

I would suspect you may have gotten a bad download of the Fossapup64 9.5 ISO or a bad install.
It does happen sometimes
A fresh new download of the ISO and a clean new install is something to try.

You are not trying to use some old save file with Fossapup64 9.5?
The install of Fossapup64 has to make it's own save file/folder to use.
It can not use one made for some other Puppy version.
