Earlier, I posed the question "are SCSI drivers needed in kernel config?"
Answer is YES - usb_storage won't work without them & will cause failed bootups.
Also, I was seeing sd_mod & sr_mod zero-byte files appearing. I forgot that Grub needs the
"pmedia=" command in kernel line to avoid this (atahd for hard-drive; usbflash for usb-stick).
