Gemini, new protocol

Post by williwaw »

https://gemini.circumlunar.space/docs/faq.html
https://gemini.circumlunar.space/docs/gemtext.gmi

seems useful for those that still search out content rather than having unwanted content "pushed" to them

@dimkr has developed gplaces, a reader for gemtext, and included it with the newest VanillaDpup,

does gplaces support reading of local .gmi files? how would you call a .gmi from the prompt?

Use file:// URLs, i.e.

> save gemini.circumlunar.space /tmp/1.gmi
> file:///tmp/1.gmi

I took a look and the blurb sounded interesting. I tried a webclient just to see some content, but that's where my issue started - issue being, what gemini content is available that is interesting to read? I couldn't find anything - just a bit like gopher, which I haven't used since the early 1990s... The quickstart page suggests you can watch videos using the protocol, but what videos - I couldn't find any. I want to watch my favourite movie! ;-)

Interesting technically, I'm sure, but I'm frankly not sure about the likely popularity and uptake nowadays. I might eat my words later?

I'm including a Gemini client in dpup as a "technology preview" not because Gemini is popular, but because it can be useful. A man-like interface to Wikipedia and various news sites (like Hacker News or taz.de) could be useful for some users.

There's a LaGrange browser that I found awhile back. I had no idea what it was at first, but after looking into it, it seems like a great concept.
