It appears though that you only get one chance .
If you type "@" then start a name it will list them underneath in a continuous search mode until you select one .
But only once . If you stuff up and clear back to the "@" it won't work again .
You must delete the lot for it to work again.

If I make a mistake, I just backspace away the incorrect characters and then enter another character and the selections come back up. I also have on occasion deleted the entire string including the "@" and started over.
