Fossapup64 bootable DVD does not boot (solved)

Post by solo »

Hi ppl,

Downloaded the fossapup64_9.5.iso and burned it to a DVD with PBurn in Bionic32, making sure that I chose the 'burn ISO image' option.
However, booting from the DVD does not seem to work. It does initiate vmlinuz, and initrd.gz too I guess, but I get a return like this:

Code: Select all

boot:

So it wants to know what to boot, and no matter what I fill in, it tells me that is not where the kernel is.

Here's what the DVD root looks like:

Perhaps something obvious is missing.

I would be very thankful if anyone could shed some light on this.

Hello solo,

Fossapup64 requires a computer with 64-bit architecture, so I hope your computer is OK in this regard.

First, I would look if your computer meets the minimum system requirements because Fossapup64 is newer and will require more resources than Bionicpup32.

Fossapup64 "Approx Minimum System Requirements: 2007 ERA 64bit Core2Duo CPU & 2GB RAM".

Every time I download an .iso, I check if it is intact after downloading.
I think a tool for this in Bionicpup32 is pupmd5sum (right click on the .iso).

I think you can solve this pretty easily. If you have the ISO file, you should be able to mount it in any "live CD" version of Puppy Linux. If you can create a folder in your hard drive, and name it 'FossaPup64', then click on the folder with the ISO file, it should mount and you should be able to view all the files in the ISO without burning it to a disc. The ISO should now appear as a folder. You should be able to highlight all the files of the ISO and drag them into your new 'FossaPup64 folder'. Select the "copy" to folder option.

Actually since you already have the DVD with all the files, you likely can just drag these files from the DVD into your new folder.

If you're running a LiveCD of any of the common Puppy's, you should be able to run either the 'GrubforDos' utility or the 'FrugalPup' utility. These will be able to pick out your new folder with the OS's files (that you just dragged from the ISO).

Just look in your applications menu under 'Setup' for a program that has the word "frugal" in it. If you come to an option that says "legacy" I suggest that at first you select that as well. You can find step by step instructions for installing a frugal version of Puppy in more than one place. Jump in the water's fine.

The utility should be able to install a "frugal" version of the OS and when you reboot, the Grub menu will load and automatically run the FossaPup operating system. Without a CD or DVD.

I hope this helps.

Thank you MrDuckGuy, your advice did the trick!

I actually migrated from one computer to another. The old one being a 64 machine also, but with such a limited amount of RAM that it just made more sense performance wise to stick with a 32 setup. The new computer though has enough RAM to warrant an upgrade. I have always preferred running puppy off a usb, so I followed MrDuckGuy's instructions, but applied it to the usb drive.
Made sure the usb drive had a proper partition with a boot flag in GParted, then copied all the files from the DVD in the root of the drive and ran the 'Grub4Dos bootloader config' on it.

And on we go!

Thank you very much.
