How to open appimage files in Fossapup64?

Post by Bobus »

I am having a problem with appimage files. I have changed properties to exe program. Yet double-clicking the file does nothing. I installed appimageloader as well. No link to open this program . just a link to its settings. I read somewhere that the extension can not have cap letters. It does not matter. I am running on usb. Linux lite does this with no problem. Linux lite is extremely slow so i prefer puppy. I am using fossapup 64 bit latest version as of 08/16/21. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Sorry, got to ask.
Is the appimage 64bit software?

Give us a link to download the appimage.
We can see what it does for us.

Some appimages do not provide all needed stuff in the appimage.

Fossapup64 9.5 should be setup for single click to open.
Do not need to double click.

Yes the files are all 64 bit. I have tried several appimages. None will work including 32 bit. The main files I have tried are Trezor Suite- https://suite.trezor.io/start/ and I have tried both Linux Versions listed.
AppImageLauncher- https://github.com/TheAssassin/AppImage ... tag/v2.2.0. I have tried many of the different versions. Yes I have tried single-click as well as double-click. I have tried several different appimage files from many sources. None work. Change to executable, click on the file and nothing happens. Same exact issue in BionicPup and Slacko64 Puppy 7.0. Exact same issue in all. Thanks for trying to help.

Change to executable, click on the file and nothing happens

I change to executable by right clicking on the appimage file.
Select properties from right click menu.
Check all exec options.
Click on refresh.
Close the properties window.

I could not get that Trezor Suite appimage to download for me. :thumbdown:
Maybe a setting in my browser blocking it from downloading.

You did download the linux (x86_64) version, not the arm64 one?
I assume you have an x86 processor computer.
arm software is not going to work on a x86 computer. ARM processors are totally different from x86 processors.

I just ran this appimage in my install of Fossapup64 9.5 with no problem.
It is an appimage I downloaded as a test program.
So try it.
https://github.com/muttleyxd/arma3-unix ... 4.AppImage

All I did was download to a location.
Navigate to that location in Rox file manager.
Give the Arma_3_Unix_Launcher-x86_64.AppImage exec permissions.
Left clicked on it and it runs.

If it does not work.
You do what?
You see what?

Note:
You can run 32bit software in Fossapup64 9.5
But you have to download and load the 32bit compatibility SFS to provide support for 32bit software.
Quickpet program can provide.
Quickpet->Useful->32bit compatibility sfs

@Bobus :-

Many AppImages won't always fire-up straight-away in Puppy. Often, these are Electron-based; where this is the case, you usually have to add the

Code: Select all

--no-sandbox

....."switch" to get them to work, since the Electron 'framework' is built around a stripped-back Chromium browser. We've had a fair bit of experience with these darned things!

AppImages are my favourite "run anywhere" package format for Puppy, so we've sort of gotten used to encouraging these things to run.....invariably, they're built to run with 'mainstream' distros, which are set-up as multi-user, with all kinds of awkward permissions, and an insistence on you running as a "normal" user, i.e, no running as '/root'.

Try this:-

Take any AppImage you like to try this out with. Go to the directory where your AppImage is. Make sure you've given it Exec permissions. Right-click->Window->Terminal here. A terminal window should open. Enter the following:-

Code: Select all

./xxxxxxxxx.AppImage

.....where "xxxxxxx" is the exact name of your AppImage; type the name EXACTLY as it appears. Now hit Enter.

What happens? Copy the terminal output, and paste it into your reply (between 'code' tags, please; makes it more easily readable. Thanks.)

(To copy terminal output in Puppy, simply highlight what you want to copy. Then, a mouse 'middle-click' will paste it where you want it).

We'll figure this out, one way or another! :D

Solved... Thanks to the electron issue mentioned and --no-sandbox. I was able to run the apps fine. I appreciate all the help in solving this issue.

@Bobus :-

Not all AppImages are Electron-based, but a good many of them are.....probably more than you'd give 'em credit for.

For easier launching, I usually put a wee script in /root/my-applications/bin (this IS "in the $PATH", but it's a location unique to Puppy.) Create a new script, and give it a relevant name. Then, something like

Code: Select all

#!/bin/bash
#
/path/to/your/AppImage --no-sandbox

.....followed by saving it; that will work. You can then drag this script to the desktop, and use it as your 'launcher'.

You can even tart it up with a suitable icon, if you want.
