Increase sound level: Add a pre-amp to ALSA

Post by bigpup »

Add a pre-amp to ALSA.

Here is something concerning low sound volume in Linux
http://alien.slackbook.org/blog/adding- ... nd-levels/

I made this Puppy version of asound.conf
Try adding this asound.conf file in /etc
Reboot computer.
( may have to reboot twice to get it loaded and changes to Retrovol mixer)
After reboot, you will find an additional control in your mixer (Retrovol) called “Pre-Amp”.
Adjust as needed.
.

asound.conf.gz
(179 Bytes) Downloaded 202 times

Remove .gz from name to make it a working config file.
Had to add .gz to name so it would attach.
Warning:
This file has to have exec permissions to work.
After downloading check it's permissions to make sure and set exec.

NOTE:
If you have a very new Puppy version.
See info in next post.

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.

Seeing how this is a how to.
Can you give us some specific info on how to do it, with this new way.
What steps you need to do?

Can also use pEqualizer (under Multimedia menu). Standard setting is 66 for all ranges. I boosted all to 76.

I found the Alien Pastures link you reference several years ago and used its code successfully in lupu 5.28 and precise 5.71. When I switched to slako 6.3 it did not work. Dpup Stretch 7.5 was also a no go. I download your asound.conf and took a look at it. It was identical to my file EXCEPT yours was an executable bash script. I took tried your file and it works with both slako 6.3 and stretch 7.5. NOTE: on stretch 7.5 the preamp did not show until I actually opened an application that used sound (in my case VLC).

If you use the asound.conf file be sure its permissions are set as executable.

Thanks bigpuup

Good catch about making it executable.
I think I will add that warning in the first post.
