Unable to load kernel video drivers

Post by hway212 »

Hi there
I am using Scarthgap 6.63 on a MeLE-Quieter3C-N5105-8GB-256GB.
With Daedalus seeming to be preferred by many I downloaded the latest version and loaded it on two spare USB sticks to try it out.
On booting the filing system expanded and then I received this message on both sticks.

EASYPCXXXX login:root (automatic login)
Waiting for kernal video drivers to load: (then after a second or two) [ 80.475264] NET: Registered PF_QIPCRTR protocol family

Previously when on Scarthgap I had tried to update to 6.6.1 (I think) and got a black screen so rolled back and then a few days later updated to 6..62 ok. I think 6.11 was on the 6.12 kernel and 6.62 reverted back to the 6.6 kernel.
With Daedalus being on the 6.12 and now 6.67 also being on the 6.12 kernel I think I may have a problem with this later kernel.

I saw a post that Barry had suggested loading to the command line and seeing if xwin would be delayed to allow the GPU to load first but this brought a completely blank screen on one USB drive and when typing XWIN got the same waiting for kernel video drivers to load message, Xorgwizard had no result.
In all cases I had to press the power button for 20 secs.

I had a previous hardware problem here: viewtopic.php?t=9077 but couldn't resolve this so use a workaround with a WiFi extender but no screen is a bigger issue.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Yes, this is unfortunate.

I have just compiled 6.12.23 for Daedalus, but perhaps I should roll Daedalus back to 6.6.x?

Unfortunately, the developer of aufs will be stopping development of 6.6.x, see post from peebee:

viewtopic.php?p=146913#p146913

For me personally, I have a 2024-model Zenbook, with Intel Ultra CPU/GPU and the 6.6.x kernel does work, but apparently 6.12.x has improvements for that CPU, such as better power management. That was my personal motivation to update the kernel.

Scarthgap 6.6.7 is still on the 6.6.75 kernel, haven't updated it to 6.12.

Hi Barry
Thanks for your speedy reply.
My Bad.. when I saw on your blog that "Version 6.6.7 brings the infrastructure up to date with the Daedalus-series version 6.6.5" I took it that the kernel had been updated as well. i should have checked the notes.

If I am the only one suffering with this then I don't think progress should be stopped just because I chose the wrong PC. If the later kernel improves other machines then I say keep going.

Interestingly when I bailed out of Daedalus and went back to my Scarthgap 6.6.3 which is permanently locked down to only run in ram, it effectively started loading to the command-line and i had to type xwin to start the screen up each time.

With you pointing out that 6.6.7 is still available to me I have updated it and this has now corrected itself and loading automatically. Thanks.

It is irritating that I bought the MeLE because it had good specs and I thought it was compatible with both Windoze and Linux and loved the small form factor but it is increasingly looked like a bad move. Doh.

Decided to go back to the 6.6 kernel for Daedalus, see blog post:
