Right Click Menu on Desktop Not Working on New PC Using Copied SaveFile [SOLVED]

Post by jp734 »

So, I got this Dell desktop with i3 4150 and upgrading to E3 1270 v3 (coming in two days). Stole it, I feel, for $15.00 on ebay. This is literally how I upgrade my systems. Instead of buying brand new, I wait for years then apply the "One man's trash is another man's treasure" principle.

Anyways, if you've read some of my posts, you know well how I like my BionicPup. The setup. The programs. Everything. I didn't want to start from scratch on this PC so I copied the savefile and to my surprise, I only got a few issues. The first thing I did before I booted the PC was edited the xorg.conf and changed nvidia to radeon. When I booted the PC, it gave me a warning "X did not close properly the last time" or something along that line. I ignored it and everything was working. Didn't see the error message anymore. Other issues where error messages saying libraries/files weren't installed even though it is. All I had to do was remove the package using PPM and reinstall them. Error gone.

I think everything is back the way it is now, except for one thing. I couldn't figure out the Right-Click menu on desktop. Nothing happens when I right click. I open ROX, right-click and chose option. Click "Menus" on the left and I see "File menu on right click" with a check mark. I've tried unchecking it, restart WM/reboot PC, then go back to "check" it back but it didn't work. Even after a reboot. How can I get it back?

JWM provides and controls this menu.

If you've lost the desktop right-click menu in JWM, the issue is likely with your JWM configuration file (.jwmrc) or a missing menu definition. You can try restarting JWM, running fixmenus, or editing the .jwmrc file to restore the menu.
Here's a more detailed breakdown:

Check your .jwmrc file:
JWM's configuration is stored in the .jwmrc file, which is XML-based. If this file is corrupted or missing, it can lead to issues with the desktop menu.

Restart JWM:
After making changes to the .jwmrc file, restart JWM to apply the changes.

Run fixmenus:
This command can help to update the menu definitions and resolve issues with missing menu items.

Review the example .jwmrc file:
You can find an example .jwmrc file that can help you understand the structure and options available.

Check for errors:
Before restarting JWM, it's a good idea to run jwm -p to check for any errors in your configuration file.

The .jwmrc file is in /root/

Should be a backup copy from the last time it changed. .jwmrc-previous

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.

In the Rox options, there is Compatibility option:

Pass all backdrop mouse clicks to window manager

@williams2 This was already checked. Thanks

@bigpup - your post helped solved my issue. Running jwm -p pointed me to the right direction, Apparently i had some missing files under /.jwm/root_menus. Missing files were symlinks to files in /usr/local/jwm_config folder.

Files are:

menu_build_bookmarks
menu_build_main
menu_build_none

after creating these symlinks and restarted JWM, right click menu is now working again. Thanks a lot. I've been using Bionic for many years and still learning something new. Things you'll never know if your system don't break :D
