Support for laptop hibernation missing in EasyOS?

Post by NNI »

Thinkpad
EasyOS Scarthgap 6.6 frugal install on SSD

Found out the hard way (ran my battery down to 0) that lid closure only triggers sleep with continuous battery draw. Was unable to track down a hibernation option. /usr/sbin/pm-hibernate only links to pm-action -> giving suspend, and /etc/acpi/lid.sh only invokes pm-suspend.

Checking pm-utils directly gives
# pm-is-supported --hibernate
# echo $?
1
# pm-is-supported --suspend
# echo $?
0
0 = State available
1 = State NOT available

Could a fresh install of pm-utils provide the missing hibernation support?

Firstly, it depends on what you want to hibernate?
Windows pre windows11 had one sort of hibernation, pretty basic;
windows11 hibernation doesn't shutdown any drives (hard or ssd) or your network;
linux is different again as it's configurable, needs settings in kernel and config files depending on how your actual hardware itself is handled.
i've always used shutdown personally as it doesn't take that long to power up, unless i'm going to be away for a short time when I just turn off video and password lock the keyboard/mouse/pen/touchscreen, leaving the power on.

If you go back to this boards index and do a search for hibernation, there should be something there.
