New to Puppy - Trying to setup Claws mail

Post by michmanbiker »

Greetings to all.

This is my first post on your forum as I just started using Puppy bookworm. I will have a lot of fine tuning questions along the way to customize it to my needs and liking.

I have decided to keep the distros built in applications as much as possible. As such I decided to use Claws mail instead of my usual Thunderbird as it is surely lighter on resources.

I tried using Claws on other distros but quickly abandoned as setting up two gmail on hotmail and one outlook accounts was nearly impossible and there are no effective tutorial I found on line to guide us in the process, not even on Claws sites and forums.

So is there someone who actually IS using Claw mail with the type of mail accounts I have listed and can show me how to set it up?

Many thanks,

Michel

What specific version of BookwormPup?

BookwormPup32 and version number?

BookwormPup64 and version number?

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.
When I was a kid, I wanted to be older.
This is not what I expected :o

Do not use it, but this is suppose to be how.

1. Open Claws Mail
Launch Claws Mail on your computer.

2. Access Account Settings
Go to the Configuration menu at the top.
Select Create a new account. This will open the "Account Wizard."

3. Add Your First Email Account
Follow the prompts to add your first account:

Account Name: Choose a name for the account (e.g., your email address or something descriptive).
Email Address: Enter your full email address.
User Name: Enter your email username (usually the same as the email address or just the part before the @ symbol).
Password: Enter your email password.

4. Set Up Incoming Mail Server (IMAP or POP3)
Claws Mail will ask you for the incoming mail server (IMAP or POP3):

IMAP: Recommended for accessing your email on multiple devices. It keeps emails on the server.
POP3: Downloads emails to your device and removes them from the server.
Enter the correct server address (e.g., imap.yourmailserver.com) and select the appropriate port (usually 993 for IMAP with SSL or 995 for POP3 with SSL).

5. Set Up Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)
Next, configure the SMTP (outgoing) server settings:

SMTP Server: Enter the outgoing mail server address (e.g., smtp.yourmailserver.com).
SMTP Port: Usually 465 or 587 for secure email sending.
Authentication: Enter your email account credentials if required.

6. Configure Optional Settings
You might be asked to set up additional options, such as:

Security settings: Choose the appropriate encryption (usually SSL/TLS).
Account folders: Set the folder locations for inbox, sent items, etc.
Click OK to finish setting up the first account.

7. Add More Accounts
To add additional email accounts:

Go to Configuration > Manage Accounts.
In the "Account Preferences" window, click Add.
Follow the same process as above for each additional account.

8. Switch Between Accounts
Once you have multiple accounts set up, you can switch between them in the left sidebar. Each account will be listed separately, and you can view the inbox, sent items, and other folders for each one.

That's it! You should now be able to manage multiple email accounts in Claws Mail.

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.

Thanks, I know how to do that except Gmail and hotmail are not that straightforward to setup. I did manage to setup ONE gmail accounts using not my password but an application password buy not another gmail account and no hotmail outlook.

Thanks,

Michel

I use claws and find it highly configurable.
I retrieve mail from servers that require different settings listed in the TLS setting page, which sometimes takes some trial and error. I dont use gmail or hotmail though and cannot be more specific.

the index page at the claws-mail wiki could use some updating, but searching the wiki with google finds

Code: Select all

@michmanbiker :-

Don't forget; anything Google-related requires 2FA by default these days. Thunderbird asks you for this just once during setup, then every time afterwards generates a 2FA 'token' via 0Auth. Mind you, Google WILL have periodic 'moans' at you for allowing 3rd-party access to your a/c, along with dire warnings about the possible consequences.

I confess, I don't honestly know how Claws/Sylpheed handles this, though it sounds to be not very much different to setting-up email a/cs under Seamonkey. It, too, requires absolutely everything to be entered manually. No "hand-holding" there, or gently guiding the user with "wizards"! (Wizards? WHAT 'wizards'? Don't be silly. This ain't Windoze, tha knows....) Image

I would imagine you could set-up as many a/cs from the same provider as required. Every a/c is treated as a separate, self-contained set of instructions, after all. The one time I needed to set-up the Seamonkey email client, it was very useful having T-Bird on the system. The account settings pages give you all the technical info you need. Admittedly, it DID help that T-Bird and Seamonkey shared a common ancestry.....it meant that much of the setup dialog was very similar in layout.

(*shrug...*)

Mike. ;)

some of the big players are implementing authorization schemes for email servers that are not in the usual RFC standards for email. The workarounds are implemented by a few clients and there are some third-party solutions.......

the push for this trend is advertised for "your security", but the easiest way forward for most "customers" is to abandon their local email clients and move to the google/microsoft/yahoo, etc webmail. this of course is good for those that wish to collect more info about their "customers" than a log entry recording an ip address would provide under the older client/server protocols. I prefer to have my email served from vendors who operate mailservers for a fee., and hope that their business model is based on a fair exchange of quality service for a price.

To start with I would like to thank all of you who have ressponded with solutions. Yes it is becomeing very hard to use desktop mail clients because the big ones are trying to make things eve more difficult. Thunderbird on my antiX do well in gathering all the various accounts but claws is lacking in that respect and all the tutorial and forum advice never seem to feature the same claw setup tabs and entries. This ads to the confusion. Claws is the default in so many distribution, maybe a group of people with knowhow could just fix what needs fixing and post a usefull tutorial for us all.

I have decided to create a new webmail account with Yahoo (never had an account there) and I pulled in all my four accounts there. So not I can just load Yahoo Mail and see all my emails when using Puppy. I tried to setup the one overencompassing account to claw, but I need an aplication passwork that Yahoo says"It cannot generetae now and to try later"!!!

I will keep you posted.

Again thanks to all.
