MAN vs TLDR vs AI for console commands

Post by Clarity »

Needing help for use of any console (aka 'terminal") commands? Linux has 3 great choices now.

  • Most everyone knows the text results gotten when executing a MAN for some command.

  • And most recently, developers have been including TLDR in their distros to assist administrators and users who use the terminal. Its much friendlier and provides great examples for immediate admin or command use.

  • Now we have AI and I, personally, have found it useful, as an administrator of my personal use of console commands. It is much clearer, friendlier with the ability to drill down into the parms of the commands to be useful in achieving the objective in the command's use. Further, it can even write a script under your guidance with you.

I had originally created this post with pic examples. They are now removed as I think everyone knows of these tools by now.

Soon you will be able to turn on your computer and let it work as it wants. Why will you be needed in this chain? The AI will know everything better than you and will even be able to write on this forum. Your computer will no longer need you, as there is a more worthy user. Muahahaha😈 Oh, I'm sorry, I couldn't resist. It's all AI, he advised me to say all this😵‍💫

Different devices. Different approach.

AFAIK tldr pages are
1. Provided by community (= by users) and not by developers - man or info pages written by developers are way more extensive and accurate
2. Pulled from an online service and not available for offline reading, like man or info pages
3. Not preinstalled in any distro, neither are the clients that pull and display tldr pages

tldr pages are not a replacement for man pages, and knowing how to read and search man pages is a super valuable skill if you want to learn how to use the terminal efficiently. tldr pages will help you get started faster, maybe.
