All SDR radio programs in Bookworm 10.8

Post by Anacleto »

Hi, I have decided to create appimages of the SDR programs to install them on a Puppy Linux distribution.
In the end, after searching through the Puppy distributions, I have decided to install it on the one that best suits these programs.

I have decided to create AppImages because this way I do not change the Puppy distribution too much and if one day I have to change to another distribution I have to make the minimum possible changes.

It has been quite difficult for me to create these appimages and I don't feel like working harder trying to adapt them to other distributions.

I have also decided to use only this Puppy only for these programs and some other electronic programs so as not to add other types of programs so that the distribution does not end up getting damaged.

In any case, always with AppImage programs and only some pet files for puppy installation and configuration.

These apps may be able to be installed on other distributions but I have not tested it, so some adjustments will probably have to be made.

These programs have been tested on the SDR rtlsdr Dongle as shown in the picture, I have not tested it on other SDR devices:

https://www.mediafire.com/view/2dqq9bqw ... e.jpg/file

VERY IMPORTANT: Before running any program install the following pet files.

1) rtlsdrx86_64-linux-gnu.pet

https://www.mediafire.com/file/i0ol5ogh ... u.pet/file

2) sox_slacko64_8.2.1.pet

https://www.mediafire.com/file/ndlhopoi ... 1.pet/file

3) SDR_dev.pet

https://www.mediafire.com/file/q1p0buxf ... v.pet/file

4) qt5_plugins_dev.pet

https://www.mediafire.com/file/a92labke ... v.pet/file

5) plugins_soapy.pet

https://www.mediafire.com/file/08f67ru7 ... y.pet/file

The previously installed pet file already includes the rtlsdr device rules file:

/etc/udev/rules.d/20.rtlsdr.rules

But it may be that our rtlsdr device SDR has a different Bus ID value, in which case we will have to vary it according to the following configuration.

1) We will open a terminal and type the

lsub

command in my case it shows the following output:

Código: Seleccionar todo

~$ lsusb
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 8087:0aa7 Intel Corp.
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 0438:7900 Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub
Bus 002 Device 004: ID 046d:c52e Logitech, Inc. MK260 Wireless Combo Receiver
Bus 002 Device 005: ID 0bda:2838 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL2838 DVB-T
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 05c8:0233 Cheng Uei Precision Industry Co., Ltd (Foxlink) HP Webcam
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

Where:

Bus 002 Device 005: ID 0bda:2838 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL2838 DVB-T

It is my SDR device and it has as important information are "0bda" (the vendor id) and "2838" (the product id).

2) Create a new file called /etc/udev/rules.d/20.rtlsdr.rules it should contain the following line:

SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTRS{idVendor}=="0bda", ATTRS{idProduct}=="2838", GROUP="adm", MODE="0666", SYMLINK+="rtl_sdr"

3) Save the file and restart the computer

Once this is done we can download all the SDR programs.

Hi rockedge thanks, yes it was a hard work, but I think it could be very interesting for people interested in amateur radio and interested in SDR devices.

It may also attract people who do not use Puppy Linux to this distribution interested in these programs. There are not that many Linux distributions dedicated to these programs.

The first AppImage program is Spektrum, which serves as a radio frequency band analyzer.

Image

We can download it from the following link:

https://www.mediafire.com/file/2bnbhxaf ... Image/file

To run the appimage, I create a script.

For example, if I use Spektrum-x86_64.AppImage, I place it in the directory:
/mnt/home/ELECTRONIC/PROGRAM

In this directory, I create the script with the name "Spektrum" in which I write the following text:

#!/bin/sh
cd /mnt/home/ELECTRONIC/PROGRAM
./Spektrum-x86_64.AppImage
Once the script is created, I drag it to the Desktop and then I insert the icon there:

spektrum.png

Which I also put inside the directory /mnt/home/ELECTRONIC/PROGRAM

We cannot download the icon from:

https://www.mediafire.com/view/y5lqlbax ... m.png/file

Greetings

The next appimage program I made was the welle-io one.

welle_program.jpg

Like the previous program, I have not found anywhere on the Internet an appimage of this program for any Linux distribution, so I think this is the first appimage created for this program.

To be able to listen to the broadcasts we must have an FM antenna and a DAB+ station close to our area.

We can't download it from:

Using the same procedure as in the first program, we can create a script to launch the program.

Inside the installation files of the first post is the command rtl_433 .

It is used to analyze and decode radio signals in the 433 MHz frequency band.

This application is very useful for those who want to monitor and control smart home devices, such as thermostats, car tire pressure, plugs, and motion sensors, since many of these devices use the 433 MHz band to communicate.

rtl_433.jpg
rtl_433.jpg (76.77 KiB) Viewed 1105 times

By running the command "rtl_433" we may see messages emitted by thermometers near us or any other devices.

Multiple options can be given with this command, all we need to do is search through the internet.

Inside the installation pet files of the first post is the command dump_1090.

It does not have menu entry runs by terminal.

There is a command that serves us to decode the signs that commercial aircraft sent and show us information relates to its location, company and more things.

To execute it, we must have the SDR device connected to the computer, in my case it is from those of the dongle type, which comes an Antenna de FM that can serve if it is done in an open space and free of buildings.

Although a special antenna is better to be mounted for this type of reception.

Really good stuff here! There is another member who is also very involved with using Puppy Linux for radio purposes. CubicSDR is what I helped with to get running on F96-CE_4 but it was sometime ago and I can't recall the details.

I think I might buy a SDR dongle device, I will need to look up that topic because the member in a post recommended a dongle to use with Puppy Linux.

This is a great project! Good work :geek: :thumbup2:

Hi rockedge thanks.

I have two SDR dongle, I have 2 SDR dongles that according to the Aliexpress USA website would be the following:

first:
https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256806 ... ry_from%3A

second:

https://www.aliexpress.us/item/32568079 ... ry_from%3A

I bought them a long time ago and they were even cheaper back then. These have very little sensitivity between the 500 Khz and 24 Mhz bands, they need a preamplifier, but it depends on what you are going to use them for. They have a multitude of applications that I will try to put in this post. I think that they are very good for getting started in the world of amateur radio. Then there are much more expensive devices but they are not worth it when you start. There are other more modern versions of Dongle now like the ones I put in the link. The prices are indicative, you can look at Aliexpres, you can always find much cheaper offers. Waiting for better deals to appear.

https://www.aliexpress.us/item/32568057 ... ry_from%3A

It is very important depending on the frequency or band you work on to have the correct antenna, which in many cases is not difficult to build with a little skill.

Greetings.

Nanovna

I bought a LIte_Nanovna network analyzer like the one in the link a while ago like the one in the link:

https://www.mediafire.com/view/btvicx9g ... a.jpg/file

There are multiple NanoVNA analyzers sold online that are very useful for radio amateurs.

There are several programs on the Internet that serve to connect these devices to the PC and for this distribution I have found 3 that work well in Puppy Bookworm but in the end I have chosen this one that is simpler and easier to use.

https://www.mediafire.com/file/fvdlug41 ... Image/file

I hope it is useful. Greetings.

Satdump

Satdump is an excellent program that helps us decode satellite signals.
View among other things weather images.
Its main features are:

Supports SDR like RTL-SDR, Airspy, HackRF, BladeRF, LimeSDR, PlutoSDR, etc.
Decodes and processes data from almost 90 satellites
Live decoding of APT, LRPT, HRPT, LRIT, HRIT and many more broadcasts.
Decoding of images and data from NOAA 15-18-19, Meteor-M, GOES, Elektro-L, Metop, FengYun, etc.
Decoding of Inmarsat Aero and STD-C EGC messages
Controls rotor and schedules.

A small tutorial on basic handling can be found on their website:
https://www.satdump.org/posts/basic-usage/

There is a lot of information on the internet.

I haven't worked with it yet but I really want to do so and first I have to
build the antenna and you have to work in open spaces for good satellite reception.

This is why I haven't used the program but I think it works without any problem,
it recognizes the rtl-sdr without problems and I don't think it has any problems with other devices either.

If someone uses it I would like to know how it went.

We can't download it from:
https://www.mediafire.com/file/u8htmplx ... 4.pet/file

Greetings

Kicad AppImage

I downloaded the Kicad AppImage and it actually works pretty well. It takes up quite a bit of space, but you have to take into account that it includes 3D packages, approximately 1.1 GB.

It can be downloaded from:

Thonny.

Thonny is a program that helps us program in python a multitude of microcontrollers such as ESP32, ESP8226,Rasperry pico Pi- Pi2, STM32, diferent Arduino boards and a lot more devices.

As we can see in the following link:

https://micropython.org/download/

In principle it would not have much to do with the world of amateur radio, but it also helps us program the Lora boards that we use for radio frequency communications between different boards and that can also be programmed in
Python.

A while ago I made this pet installation file for Puppy Linux, which works very well in Bookworm and although it is not the latest version it works correctly with the python firmwares that I have downloaded for different microcontroller boards.

I leave it here in case it is useful.

We can download from link:

AbracaDABra 2.9.2

AbracaDABra is another DAB+ radio receiver that, thanks to KejPi, we can download AbracaDABra-v2.9.2-x86_64.AppImage from the link :

https://github.com/KejPi/AbracaDABra/releases

It is an AppImage that works perfectly in Puppy bookworm without any problem, we will only need to have radio stations in our environment that broadcast in DAB+.

The icon if we want to make a launcher from where we place the program would be .a, as we did in the first post.

Picsimlab

Picsimlab is a protoboard simulator with different microcontrollers. Although it is not a great simulator for large projects, it can be useful for small simulations or for simulating small parts of a program. It cannot simulate some things, but it is clear that its developers are making a great effort.
I have used it a few times to simulate small parts of code and it has been useful to me.

We can use the following icon in the launcher:

Xoscope_2.3.1

Many years ago I made a pet for the puppy murga forum of xoscope. Now I have made this appimage again.

We have to be careful with some things:

1) The input of this simple oscilloscope for low frequencies of approximately 10 to 20 Khz.

2) The input can be by line or by microphone, we have to be very careful not to damage the inputs to the computer, putting some limiting circuits so as not to damage the inputs.

3) To see how the oscilloscope works we simply see connecting an input of the computer microphone and producing noises on it.

4) In Bookworm I detected the microphone in a laptop bud didn't work on desktop computer, I haven't yet been able to configure, we have to take this into account if it does not work for us, to do this try this appimage in another puppy distribution.

5) Having the knowledge we can increase the performance of this oscilloscope at the signal level and frequency range.

Here we have the icon in case we want to make a launcher:

We cannot download the program from:

https://www.mediafire.com/file/9vnxh5yd ... Image/file

To be able to run it, you must give it execution permission:

chmod 777 Xoscope-x86_64.AppImage

I hope it is useful. Greetings.

Re: All SDR radio programs in Bookworm 10.8

Arduino

Arduino is used to program a multitude of different microcontroller boards in C++ language, including the Lora boards used by radio
amateurs for communications.

To install Arduino on Puppy Linux you don't have to do anything special, you just have to go to the website:

https://www.arduino.cc/en/software

The latest version of Arduino is Arduino IDE 2.3.4.

All we have to do is download the zip file, unzip it and inside the directory you will find the Arduino script file that will open the program when executed.

This Arduino folder contains everything necessary for the Arduino program to work.

There are also appimages that can be downloaded, but I don't use them because I usually have problems saving configuration data.

I also don't use the latest versions of Arduino, I usually use versions 1.8.xx

When the Arduino script is run for the first time, what happens is that two folders are created inside the /root directory that
usually have a name similar to:

/root/Arduino and /root/.Arduino15

/root/.Arduino15 contains the libraries that we install.
/root/Arduino information about libraries and settings.

What I usually do is move these directories to the directory where Arduino is located inside "home".

Then I create links from root to these directories.

ln -s /mnt/home/PATH_Arduino/arduino-1.8.xx/.Arduino15 /root/.Arduino
ln -s /mnt/home/PATH_Arduino/arduino-1.8.xx/Arduino /root/Arduino

I do this for two reasons:

1) I don't like load the Pupsave file of the distribution, Arduino libraries can reach a large volume of megabytes.

2) When I change the Puppy-Linux distribution I don't have to do anything but recreate the links in this new distribution, all the libraries and
configurations are saved in the directory:

/mnt/home/PATH_Arduino/arduino-1.8.xx .

Greetings.
