Should some Mainline Puppys be Moved to Mainline Legacy?

Post by mikeslr »

I've used these and have in the past recommended them. They are still good, solid 'work-horses' for a User having limited desires and an older computer which might struggle with newer Puppys. But there are now newer, more capable Puppys better suited for most needs. Although they appear in the Mainline Section, they are no longer maintained and some of the repositories their Puppy Package Managers once were able to access are now archived. Their continued presence in the Mainline Section can only serve to confuse those new to our Forum that they are still generally recommended. New Users guessing wrongly waste their own time and that of Forum participants trying to obtain an operating system meeting their needs.

Of course, this is rockedge's Forum. I don't know how difficult it might be to move all associated threads from the Mainline to the Mainline>Legacy Section. So, of course, he should have the last word.

The Puppys I have in mind are:
Bionic, both 32 and 64 bit
dpup-Stretch
TahrPup, both 32 and 64 bit
XenialPup, both 32 and 64 bit.

Other than that the S15Pups are still maintained, I am not sufficiently familiar with the older Slackos to suggest whether or not they also should be moved.

What do you think?

I actually have to wonder about fossapup64_9.5 at this stage of the game. Seems like there are frequent posts about not getting things working in terms of applications, mtp connections and such.

@mikeslr

Yes I agree, I think it would be appropriate to separate 'Legacy' (non-maintained) from mainstream.

As it can been seen from my signatures, my use of 'Legacy' Pups is my choice.

Neither are maintained in the full sense of the word any more. However, IMO, the developers would still provide assistance if asked.

I have no knowledge of website creation, updating or maintenance so I cannot comment on the work needed if actioned.

Many operating system websites do offer 'Legacy' versions. With that distinction a user is able to choose and knows what to expect.

I would vote for this......... and also a prune of:
puppy-linux-collection

Thread should be moved to: viewforum.php?f=127

Threads/topics can be moved and also leave a "shadow topic" link so that current links to the topic don't return "not found" error.
I and the other global moderators have this ability. I'm getting ready to head off for 10hr workday, so one of the other mods
may have to do the move, with enough member support!

I actually have to wonder about fossapup64_9.5 at this stage of the game. Seems like there are frequenty posts about not getting things working in terms of applications, mtp connections and such.

F96-CE_4 solved a long-term issue I (apparently alone) had with Osmo not being able to edit Tasks on my computers. So I installed all my favorite Fossapup64 applications into F96 and removed Fossapup64 from my boot-menu. On the other hand, there have been 6782 posts in the fossapup64 section, including a substantial number relating to 'Additional Applications' and providing download links to applications which can be run under F96.

I'd suggest the OP of F96 be edited to include something like the following: Many applications created for Fosspup64 will run OOTB under F96. If you are searching for additional applications, don't forget to include the Search Term 'Fossapup64' as an argument in https://psearch.puppylinux.com/ 's search box.

If Fossapup64 isn't moved I'd suggest it's OP be edited to include something like the following: Caution: Unless you have a specific reason to use Fossapup64, it is strongly recommended that you use F96-CE, viewforum.php?f=197, an updated and 'bug-fixed' version.

Home from work...anyway, for the moment I'm holding off moving as the Forum is undergoing some changes.
When things settle down a bit, I'll see what can be done if it isn't already!

Looks like many of the older Puppy topics have been moved. That leaves the "Slacko" Pup topics. What does everyone think?
I think it should be moved to Legacy, since there really isn't any new activity. For a new Slackware based Puppy I highly recommend
peebee's S15Pups, listed under "SPups". Maybe @rockedge can weigh in or go ahead and move the topic?

Peebee is also actively supporting the slackware derived LxPupSc64 FWIW. In general, the new structure is cleaner and makes finding things at a glance simpler.

My pups: LxPupSc64 and Voidpup64 with LXDE ydrv and synaptics touchpad drivers, using small savefiles for customizations. Ydrv based NoblePup64 and Fossapup64-low (both LXDE/PCManFM with no savefiles). Small common custom fdrv throughout. :thumbup2:

I moved Slacko to Legacy. Seems to be the right thing to do.

Radky's Dpup Stretch and probably some more eol Debian Puppies are broken because the package manager fails when the Debian repos go to archive.

@dancytron :-

Mm. I'm curious. D'you remember the fix we figured out some years ago for the older 'buntu Pups, where we made a few edits to the /root/.packages/DISTRO_COMPAT_REPOS file? I managed to get Raring's repos up-and-running again, years after the 9-month wonder had vanished into the obscurity of the archives...

Probably not much point bothering, TBH, but.....could that work for these older Debian Puppies (if anybody wanted to do so?)

Mike. :?

I tried but couldn't figure it out.

It would be nice if they could retire gracefully.

with UPUP Raring 3.9.9.2 we changed the repo URL's in the DISTRO_COMPAT_REPOS to the Ubuntu Archived repos, then the PPM worked again in Raring. We did it also with Lucid 5.2.8 afterwards and the worked also.

The general idea is to change the URL to old-releases.ubuntu.com in the /root/.packages/DISTRO_COMPAT_REPOS

Just modify the part of the URL with the repo address :thumbup2:

There is more to it than that for Debian.

I'll test @peebee's mod, hopefully tomorrow.
