I tried the 'retro' and it's kind of crippled. It runs but there are almost no utilities and programs pre-installed. No browser for example. It is not for a typical end-user.
Also ran the strict 'iso' version and also the 'wayland' version, both seemed very similar, I wasn't really able to see the difference. They're working, and I have the strict version on my desktop and the wayland version on my laptop, both are running very smoothly.
I think that the package managers on both of these are not so great. the PPM is there but crippled with only one repository that doesn't have a lot of applications contained there. The Synaptic PM is there but I was having trouble finding things in its repository.
One good thing I found with VanillaDpup64 was the Bluetooth connectivity and implementation. I was able to implement Bluetooth on my laptop and was able to use it to tether a WIFI connection from my Android device instead of the laptop's internal hardware and was able to go online with only Bluetooth tethered to the Android.
Probably there are a good number of better reviews of VanillaDpup64 elsewhere on this forum and this is a very cursory impression that I just gathered from around two weeks of running it on both the laptop and the desktop.
