10 minue boot time? Frugal 96 CE SSD Laptop?

Post by theroar84 »

I have an Asus laptop that I added Fossa 96 CE to. Simple Fast Frugal. SSD with a fat 32 boot partition and the rest is ext 4. For some reason it has a 10 minute pause during boot. 4 GB or ram. Intel Centrino.

I made this YouTube short that shows the boot in 40 seconds.

Is there a clue in the footage? Or is there a file I can check after boot that may show what is the hold up?

Thanks for your time.

Mike

That looks very reminiscent of an issue with Fatdog doing the same thing.
grub4dos on an EXT4 partition with a big initrd has a super long boot time. It is sorted by using the initrd-nano in Fatdog. Not sure about Fossa 96 and a solution.

Fatdog info can be found here:

Is this F96-CE_4?

What boot loader is being used?
What version is it?

How did you configure it to boot F96-CE?

The boot partition is formatted what format?

Post an image of what is on the boot partition?

Is secure boot disabled in the computers bios setup?

Are these the files in the frugal install directory?

What model and specifications of the laptop?

Is this a new SSD? Health check?

The sizes/number of your partitions?

Is there another OS installed?

Which build of FP-96?

If this computer has UEFI bios and it is not set to use legacy mode or CSM.

The old Grub4dos boot loader will not boot it.

If the drive is using a GPT partition table, that is also a problem with Grub4dos.

This version will work:
viewtopic.php?t=3360

This is named Grub2config, but it is still basically Grub4dos, only setup to work with newer computers and UEFI bios.

Thanks for all the tips. I missed fat 32 before "boot partition". Sorry about that. It is CE4.

Asus Model is UL50A

I used diskpup. Did not modify the bootloader at all. Just put it on the 250meg fat 32 partition. Confirmed msdos, not gpt.

The only os on the machine is Puppy.

Will double check the BIOS next boot. I believe I have everything set to legacy boot.

Is there a tool in Puppy to check the health of an SSD?

Images of the partitions and HDINFO

Thanks again for all the info!

Big shoutout to Jasper! Too early for a sunset rn, but absolutely love the list. 💯🔥🤣🤣

Thanks for sharing the details

There are two tools that spring to mind that you can use to check the health of your SSD.

Both can be installed by your Package Manager (screenshots is just for illustration purposes)

Both require using terminal to run the necessary commands to check the device.

Can you show us the details contained within the grub.cfg ? ....... this is a USB flash drive install

Another suggestion from me .........................BACKUP the original files before doing this!!!

This will update your Grub files to the latest version.

BTW you can delete the x64 files as they have no function for you.

HDSentinel Portable viewtopic.php?t=5104

If I understand.

This is the first partition on the drive.
The partition is formatted fat32
The boot loader is on it.

F96-CE_4 is a frugal install on the 2nd partition.

You use Diskpup to do the install.

No other operating systems are also on this drive.

So Diskpup should have installed a Grub2 boot loader.

We need to see what is in the grub.cfg file, so we can see if the boot menu entries are correct.

If you used Diskpup that comes with Fossapup64 9.5

There is a much newer improved version provided by installing the newest version of Frugalpup Installer:
viewtopic.php?t=337

I suggest you delete all that is on the drive.

Use this newer Frugalpup installer to do the install.

Follow this way to do it:
viewtopic.php?t=11171

This is written for USB stick installs, but any drive will work with this procedure.
I have done this on SD cards, internal/external drives, HDD, SSD, etc.............

Seems like a lot of steps and info, but wanted to make sure, fully understand, what to do, and when.
