Running EasyOS Scarthgap 6.5 in a VM with EasyOS Daedalus 6.5 in an Easy Container

Post by myke »

Environment: EasyOS Scarthgap 6.5 guest in a Linux Mint host via virt-manager with qemu-kvm back ends (driving an automatic vs std/manual). The Linux Mint host is basically a shell with all apps and work done in EasyOS either Scarthgap -- including Flatpaks either standard or customized (LibreOffice-fresh) -- or Daedalus (Treesheets- latest github version).

I found start-up of Daedalus to happen in a reasonable amount of time as well as the switching back and forth between Scarthgap and Daedalus to be instantaneous via the function key combination or the new button; however, the start-up of the other EasyOS series sfs as well as the Puppy Linux OSes in Easy Containers are now exceedingly slow, to the point that I have thought initially that the start-up had failed and gone on to do other work only to find it occurring. This is not really important as I have not really found a use for the other containers. On the other hand, once I have converted a 32-bit puppy into an sfs, added a 32 bit WINE pet and placed it in a container, it will be important as I will be using it to run old 32-bit Windows XP freeware.

As EasyOS is running in a VM, there are no sda1 or sda2, but there are vda1 and vda2. Neither of these are visible on the home screen, but I can find them via the lsclk command. I should also mention that from the ROX-Filer menu entry I can get to mnt so I can access wkg, etc.

An important aspect to a VM is its re-sizing. The vm first has to be re-sized in the host via a virt-manager command in the host OS terminal and then via gparted in the guest OS, EasyOS, the unallocated disk space is allocated to vda2 via a re-sizing command, which also formats the space as ext4.

I appreciate the new button to switch between Scarthgap and Daedalus. Unfortunately, the other EasyOS and Puppy Linux OSes in containers still only use the Alt-F6 method. I am lucky in that my laptop has the Fn key, which hides the Alt-F6 command from the host OS; otherwise, someone using a virtual machine would not be able to use these other containers.

Thank you for the new versions of EasyOS Scarthgap and EasyOS Daedalus and the new button in EasyOS Daedalus to switch back to Scarthgap.
