Copy Errors When Copying From Main Ext4 Partition to a fat formatted location (solved)

Post by JusGellin »

I noticed that when I copy a KL extracted iso to the ext4 partition, Rox or any file manager does it without any errors.

I make this bootable and do a boot.

Then If I try to copy the other way - from the ext4 partition to a folder, it gives symlink errors:
The error says "ERROR: Operation not permitted"

Why is it different when copying from the iso to copying from ext4 partition?

How could I copy a working system from the ext4 partition to a folder either using ROX or a cp command from the terminal?

Thanks

Check if the folder you are copying to is on a FAT partition (symlinks won't work there).

NTFS can handle symlinks.
But it changes file properties as well as FAT.
E.g.: text files without the .txt suffix will change to be executable files.
In Rox they will look like the shell script files then.

My OS: ArtStudio64 - a Woof-CE built from Bionic 18.04
Running in RAM only, no save file, no save folder

I make this bootable and do a boot.

In my understanding, "You made a boot" after KL extracted iso.
Did you save something at shutdown?
If yes, then the folder in KL extracted iso is already changed, so that's why you got an error while copying the folder.

No, just copying this ext4 partition to a fat format thumbdrive was the problem whether I booted or not like @fredx181 mentioned. It was the symlinks that the thumbdrive couldn't handle.
So I reformated the thumb drive to be ext4 also and then copied the main ext4 partition again with no problems.
