Intel i915 drivers (kernel 5.4.257-64) [SOLVED]

Post by Jasper »

@ozsouth

I have been using the kernel from your latest Fossa64-Small v4 (5.4.257-64oz-nskl-a) which is continuation of the original Fossapup64 ISO.

I did want to correct this and thought I could get the skl_dmc_ver1_27.bin from the link provided and add it to my firmware modules directory.

https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/ke ... /tree/i915

Looking back at the 1st picture, does this mean the i915.ko would need to be recompiled as it contains all the other firmware blobs within it?

Also, it looks like the Bluetooth files are not loading up too :cry:

@Jasper See: https://forum.puppylinux.com/viewtopic. ... 489#p94489. Should work unless even more stuff were ripped with the small version than the bas version.

@amethyst - I included your intel files last year. Unlike the failed Micro attempt, Small (current offering) is a 'work-back-from-good' build, so the intel drm driver is there, along with some useful extras.
@Jasper - that 5.4.257 kernel is now over a year old. Firmware for your card is obviously incomplete, so you can add it to fdrv, but use the fossapup64 original fdrv's file - not the link you have. There may be other such firmware missing for others. Small fdrv update below.
With jamesbond's help, I compiled a 5.4.284 kernel & am testing a version of Small with both aufs & overlay option, which uses that. As it is experimental, I want to test it for a while. Marv is happy with it & greengeek is also testing now. I will publish the kernel soon & updated pup after. I could pm you a link to the kernel, to test, but your pm's are turned off.
Meanwhile, the fdrv linked ... (removed, as now part of small v5)

Hello ozsouth
Is the method published anywhere? I still use 5.4 kernels with my Intel Braswell N3150 so I would like to do a new version. Later kernels had problems running Braswell, but the kernel on the noblepup ISO seems to be OK, so the bug might have mended itself.
Thanks.

@amethyst

Thanks for the files, I did check and I do have the same files installed already :thumbup:

Your supplied Intel i915 & BT fdrv locked and loaded, ready for action :thumbup2:

In regards to the existing kernel I am using, I feel that the read/write to NTFS partitions is comparably slower to 6.xx builds.

PM are turned off as I used to get a lot of unrequested spam messages.

Will look forward to the updated kernel when released.

Thank you!!

@Jasper & @LateAdopter - when I finish testing, I will post the kernel & after more testing, the new pup. As it's different, I don't want to rush it in.

@Jasper - libavcodec is a part of the ffmpeg (v3.4.13) compile I did. Changing that would break ffmpeg. However, your video plays in vlc , so that's a win.

@ozsouth

Both VLC and MPV are using VA-API, so great to see some offload onto the GPU.

Unfortunately, I cannot get any browser to use VA-API which would have great as it would have done the same.

Also, would have solved the constant issue of browsers hogging RAM.

My conclusion is that MESA needs to compiled with this particular instruction.
