Kernel panic booting BookwormPup from USB stick

Post by MajorDill »

Any idea why I am getting : Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)

booting from a usb stick created with UNetbootin (on a ubuntu 18 machine)
BookwormPup64_10.0.7.iso downloaded in my Downloads dir
I tried booting on 2 different machines so its probably not a memory problem
then tried:
F96-CE_4.iso
when the boot menu came up I stuck with "default"
also tried the option under that (not 100% sure what that was, just the name of the iso I think)
I also tried boot option to load .sfs into ram with the same results

i can't think of any other info. if i've left out something - just ask
thanks

i should mention i formatted the stick with ext4 if that matters

What boot loader did you install or are you booting from CD-ROM or USB drive?

What do the boot stanza's in the menu.lst look like? Can you find them and post?

this is an example of what we refer too as a boot stanza.

Code: Select all

title F96-CE_4 (uuid)
  find --set-root uuid () 8a8ea99d-a1b0-4c43-b1a0-d4ce5c9c7dfa
  kernel /F96-CE_4/vmlinuz psubdir=F96-CE_4 pmedia=atahd net.ifnames=0
  initrd /F96-CE_4/initrd.gz

what version of Unetbootin you using?

Best to be using the 702 version or newer.

The additional info provided here may be what you need to do:
viewtopic.php?t=8149

The info about editing the grub.cfg file entries.

On the USB install should find the grub.cfg file there with the other Bookwormpup64 files.

Open the grub.cfg file in a text editor program.

Anyplace it has pmedia=cd

Change it to pmedia=usbflash

Now try to boot it.

What now happens?

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.
When I was a kid, I wanted to be older.
This is not what I expected :o
