GOOGLE change their Extensions Manifest from V2 to V3

Google would like to fight adblockers on YOUTUBE.

https://www.androidpolice.com/google-ch ... 3-rollout/

While users and developers were worried about Manifest V3’s encounter with ad blockers, Google says the top content filtering extensions on the Chrome Web Store, including AdGuard, uBlock Origin, and Adblock Plus, have all launched Manifest V3 versions. Google also added that over 85% of actively maintained extensions in Chrome are running Manifest V3.

It’s unlikely that Google will ditch ad-blocking extensions from the Chrome Web Store. However, Google-owned YouTube will certainly not let users see content once an ad blocker is enabled on their browser. YouTube has clearly stated that using ad blockers violates its Terms of Service.

Then it is recommended to use adblockers which are V3 compliant.
OR TO USE FIREFOX which autorizes all adblockers.

I wonder if this is only for Android now (soon), or perhaps this "fight adblockers on YOUTUBE" will be later implemented also for when using browser(s) (Chromium based or other) as a Linux Desktop user. :?:

It is for google chrome on linux, windows, android, everywhere .
The fight adblockers on YOUTUBE is with V3 on google chrome.
The only way to avoid it is firefox which accepts any adblockers versions.

I am afraid this is not at the first and will for sure not be the last time that big G will attempt to impair user's privacy as their business model is to sell (personalized) advertisements.
It is not clear how much chromium based web browser will be affected by this latest implementation, among things to consider the changes on the Chrome Web Store.
Firefox (and its forks)' users should be safe ; my hope is that MV3 will eventually have negative outcomes on Chrome's market share.

FYI

a long while ago (around 2020) there was an issue with a copyright dispute between google and youtube-dl, github was also taken into account as youtube-dl was hosted there; I do not remember the full details but online you can find article eg https://www.engadget.com/github-youtube ... 01386.html

the point is that from that moment several forks of youtube-dl were born; from then till the present yt-dlp is the one to use.

Code: Select all

https://github.com/yt-dlp/yt-dlp/wiki/Installation

Time to time google changes youtube's backend code and APIs, these changes may (partially) brake yt-dlp (and in this case also youtube-dl). You will then need to wait that a new version is released that fix those issues. Either you check the gihub project page or you use its rss feed to receive releases updates:

Code: Select all

https://github.com/yt-dlp/yt-dlp/releases.atom

to update when a new version is available, from terminal

Code: Select all

yt-dlp -U

The latest yt-dlp version was released on Thu, 01 Aug 2024 and it works fine on youtube.

As you can there see youtube-dl development is no longer active: https://github.com/ytdl-org/youtube-dl

To add, for info: Indeed, the regular youtube-dl is not developed anymore but the youtube-dl nightly release works fine.

Yeah, it's a good idea to switch to V3-compliant ad blockers or consider using Firefox, which is more open to ad blockers.
