Pentium D - High CPU Usage - LOUD Fan [Not Solved BUT SOLVED]

Post by jp734 »

Found an old desktop with dual core 64 bit Pentium D 2.4/3.4 GHz with 4GB ram, Sound Blaster Audigy 2 and ATI RV370. Tried BookwormPup 32 and 64 bit and surprisingly it performs very well if working on spreadsheets, documents and online browsing "light load" demanding website. But when you watch youtube videos, cpu fluctuates between 70% to 95% and the fan starts to get really loud. I also tried bionicpup 32 and 64 bits. The same exact behavior.

Have these CPUs pretty much reached their limits or are there OS and browsers out there that will let you enjoy watching youtube videos without making your ear bleed? :lol:

Same thing with my Pentium D desktop, the issue is CPU power, suggest you try something like Palemoon browser, even then streaming video is going to push the CPU, so may need to keep it in a window. Also note Palemoon can't stream DRM content.

Make sure the CPU fan and heat sink aren't full of dust, PD's just run hot anyway.

I'm using the Light browser right now. It plays youtube videos but struggles. Have a feeling it will be the same no matter what browser I use.

Just fired up my Pentium D D935 3.2ghz, 3gb ram. Fan is pretty noisy even at idle. BW64 and Firefox, Youtube video streaming full screen used 60-95% CPU and 47-50 degrees C. No change in fan speed, better than I remember.

You might try installing pmcputemp and monitor the CPU temp.

Thats a good idea. Thinking about watching dvd as well just to see how it performs but will have to do some reconfigurations. DVD drive is IDE and connection is being used by the hard drive already and they're too far apart from each other. Can't hook them up with the same cable. The good news is there is a sata connection so I just need to find a spare sata hd

Thinking about watching dvd

Lots less CPU load for that & you can always boot Pup from USB

Reconfiguration done, DVD playing and like you said, lots less cpu load. Oh well, at least the dinosaur works. :D

Practically speaking, it has about as much computing power as an early Chromebook or cloudbook computer.

Save the dinosaur!! :thumbup2:

Thanks

@jp734

One last thought, you didn't specify what motherboard you have, but some of those would support CPU upgrades to the Intel E series dual cores or even Q series quad cores. Lots faster and run cooler, just search your motherboard on the web for CPU support.

It's a Dell E510 desktop. I can definitely take a look at the mobo model and check it out. I might find a cpu for $5.00 on ebay :)

Just an update. This mobo looks like it has the fastest cpu I can install after some research. It's a 0HJ054
