Trying to install Chromium & boot OS

Minimum information we need:

What specific Puppy version?
Bookwormpup64 10.0.4

Computer make and model or specs? Axiomtek IMB200
CPU? Intel SL9KE Socket 775
Memory? 4GB
Graphics hardware? ATI All-in Wonder 9800 PRO
Network hardware? Onboard Intel chipset 865G+ICH5

How is Puppy installed? Frugal (I think)
Installed on what drive? PNY SSD
How is drive partitioned? ext3 /dev/sdc1 boot bls_boot flag

I failed to install this Chromium program because I couldn't find it in this forum nor on the internet because after all, we all do these 'customized' installers. I'm not sure what I should do.

The other problem I've had is how to get this boot program to boot any other operating system installed. I've tried everything + 3 days with no success. I never knew there existed about 1 billion types of error messages. So to ask what error message I get well... Pick one and you've got it. Point thy finger and thy gets unto thy error! (to put it in a different way).

I haven't had any success getting Chromium to run in BW64. @peebee 's Chromium's from here:
viewtopic.php?t=458
have worked in the past, but not in BW64. I settled for using @mikewalsh Chrome Portable from here.
viewtopic.php?p=95126&hilit=portable+app#p95126

If you do get Chromium running, be sure to post your solution back here.

Thanks

Insanitor, "The other problem I've had is how to get this boot program to boot any other operating system installed." This? Which?

Question should have its own thread. But try installing, then running grub2config, https://www.forum.puppylinux.com/viewtopic.php?t=3360 allowing it to replace your current boot-loader. My experience is that grub2config finds all OSes and generates a Boot-Menu offering it.

Hark, there is a PET that works wonderfully for Chrome. Its @ETP's "Get Chrome" PET, here, on the forum.

When installed, this PET merely updates the distro's desktop Menu>Internet with the Get Chrome utility.
Click this utility and it will:

  1. fetch the most current version and

  2. lead you to installation

every time you use it.

Flawless!

BookwormPup64_10.0.2 running alienbobs ungoogled-chromium Version 110.0.5481.177
which i got at
https://slackware.nl/people/alien/slack ... kg64/14.2/

dunno about more recent versions-I probally need to update!

I recall fiddling with it some, anyway I run it as spot with

Code: Select all

chromium-ungoogled --user-data-dir=/tmp/browser/ --disk-cache-dir=/tmp/browser/ "$@"

if i recall correctly, the "$@" solved some issues.
running the cache and configs in /tmp may not be neccesary

Grub2config will boot windows 2000 but not without an error message complaining about the last switch it sets. Removing the switch gives different errors and will prevent booting all together. Grub4dos will not have this problem.

Both bootloaders do not function booting MS-DOS 6.22 properly. If at all. You get an error message about himem.sys and the a20 line.

If I go into my BIOS and boot the hard drive that the operating is installed in, it works perfectly.

No boot loader I have tried will boot all three operating systems.

The best I could do is to use a CD and use the bootloader on that to boot MS-DOS 6.22 and Windows 2000. Other than grub4dos and grub2config, no other bootloader I have tried can boot Bookwormpup64 and that’s assuming that the bootloader I try to use actually runs.

@Insanitor :-

CPU? Intel SL9KE Socket 775

Yikes. Would it really have been so hard to tell us that this was a 3.4 GHz, "Cedar Mill" Pentium 4 (651) with H/T instead?

Most people don't know what "SL9KE" refers to.......much less be aware that this is what's known as an Intel S-spec 'stepping-code'. But credit for going the extra mile; at least with this, you always know exactly what model of CPU you're talking about. It cannot be mistaken for anything else!

For Win2000 and MS-DOS, I think the approach would have to be to let them boot via their own bootloaders, and if necessary "chain" into these from GRUB2config. I think that might work. Others will perhaps know better.....

And are you referring to the Chromium web-browser.....or the ChromiumOS operating system (the open-source equivalent to the Chromebook's 'ChromeOS'?)

Mike. ;)

@Insanitor

@williwaw thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I downloaded Chromium 120 (not ungoogled) and got it to run in BW 10.0.3-4. Did not have to use your code, just used a "run-as-spot" script. Made into a .pet package, it will run from the menu. Haven't tested a lot, but seems to run ok. May also run in some of the other newer Pups.

I was just.....gobsmacked, mate! I don't ever recall anyone in this community ID-ing their processor quite like that before.... Of course, ya need to recognize the number, and THEN need to be able to go somewhere you can easily ID it. I've belonged to here, for well over 12 years:-

It's an absolute treasure-trove of CPU info.....if you're into that stuff.

@Insanitor @wizard

The Chromium .sfs from:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/lxpup/ ... /browsers/

should run on BookwormPup64 if the cpu has the necessary capabilities.....

An Intel Pentium 4 processor or later that's SSE3 capable

I severely apologize for being so unverbose. But I think I can fix it.

AHEM:

Ladies and gentlemen, let me tell you about this absolutely tremendous piece of technological marvel – it's none other than the Intel Pentium 4 processor, and we're talking about the 651 model here. Now, brace yourselves because this bad boy is clocking in at a mind-blowing 3.4 GHz frequency. Can you believe it? Incredible!

But wait, there's more – this powerhouse, affectionately known as Cedar Mill, is operating on the cutting-edge 0.065-micron manufacturing technology. I mean, that's not just good; it's fantastic, folks. And when it comes to cache size, we're talking a whopping 2 MB L2 cache. Now, that's the kind of storage that gets you excited.

Now, let's dive into the features. EM64T? Check. Enhanced SpeedStep? Absolutely. Execute Disable Bit? You betcha. And don't even get me started on Hyper-Threading technology – it's in a league of its own.

And here's the kicker – this processor supports the 775_VR_CONFIG_06 guidelines, making it an absolute gem for short-term listings on auction and classifieds sites. It's not just a chip; it's a symbol of American innovation! So, folks, get ready to embrace the incredible power of technology like never before!

Let’s make processors great again!

I installed this and when I first ran it it put colored squares on the two "O's" on the google logo.

I thought, "Hmmm. What a strange google doodle!"

I then went to google.com on another browser and these boxes did not appear.

So I came to the conclusion that someone is either playing a joke on me (which would be perfectly justified) or something is wrong with this browser so I uninstalled it for now...

...just in case my computer starts talking to me like Donald Trump.

And about booting the other operating systems?

It is time for me to introduce the error of the minute when trying to boot Windows 2000...

The current error is: (Drumroll please!) Drummmmm....

"Invalid boot.ini file
Booting from C:\winnt
Ntdetect failed"

And you win nothing! YAY!

And what's the current error when I try to boot MS-DOS 6.22?

I'm glad you asked! Because no option is there to boot it at all!

"The worst kind of error you can get is when the program you're trying to run does not exist." <-- I should put a patent on that quote.

t put colored squares on the two "O's" on the google logo

Have not seen that, but I am testing on much newer hardware. Probably related to your old video chipset and the driver BW64 is using for it.

@Insanitor Nothing wrong with that package from what I tested, just normal Chromium.

Here is the same Chromium 120, as above, in a .sfs:

Remember, with BW64 you have to load, que and reboot before using.

Hi @wizard,

you have to use the "snap" version (chromium64_120.0.6099.224_lx_spot_snap.sfs) - because BookwormPup64 has glibc 2.36.

peace

.....and - as per the above - in 'portable' format......for anyone who's interested.

Included libs allow it to run in Xenialpup64 and Tahrpup64. I'd best qualify this by saying that my own copies of these have been heavily modified; much newer kernels, upgraded glibc, and the Nvidia drivers. I can't guarantee this will run in standard builds of these two.

Still, if anyone wants to try it, you can find it here:-

https://www.mediafire.com/folder/jyfv9f ... Chromium64

(Thanks for the build, @wizard ! WideVine's been included, so NetFlix/Spotify/Hulu/Amazon Prime, etc., are available and usable for those who want them.)

EDIT:- It will run in a 'standard' Xenialpup64, i.e., k4.9.58 and glibc 2.23. I'm posting from it now in my Xenial64 copy on the Dell Latitude. No mods here apart from the Nvidia drivers.

Mike. ;)

@mikewalsh

Hi MIke,
Loaded up the portable and it does not run. Looks like your LAUNCH script is executing the chromium binary. If you built this from my v120 pet or sfs files, they run from the /usr/bin/chromium-run.sh script.

Thanks
wizard

Edit: False alarm, drive was to low on space. The portable does run.

@wizard :-

Hm. 'Kay, so.....well, I have to assume there's summat different about the way the 'run-as-spot' stuff functions in these newer Puppies. For me, running it via my standard run-as-spot wrapper is working A-OK; I'm posting from it now.

(It's quite possible there's a conflict somewhere between the included libs and a newer Pup's installed libs, although the final stanza in the wrapper script allows for running it without the included libs. This will simply run it under whatever libs are natively available in the system.)

Thinking about it, I'm sure I remember reading a discussion somewhere, back before Xmas, about the 'run-as-spot' stuff having had to be re-written to work with the way the 'usrmerge' stuff is now affecting current distros. I'm sure it was something along those lines.... :o

What do you get if you run the portable build from the terminal? What's the output?

Mike. ;)
