Running 6.3.92, I have installed Dolphin.
Opened folder /usr/share/examples/text, right-clicked on testdoc.doc, also tried /usr/share/examples/spreadsheets, right-clicked on Sample.xls
It doesn't automatically pick up apps available to open that mime-type. For testdoc.doc, I entered "swriter" and then it opened and is remembered.
1. First question, is it possible to get Dolphin to automatically offer a choice of appropriate apps to open the file?
2. Secondly, are you saying that after updating, a choice that I have made, for example .doc files opened by swriter, will be lost?
EDIT:
I have found that Dolphin stores file associations in /root/.config/mimeapps.list
Interesting. So, if I pre-populate that file with all file associations, then Dolphin will read that.
I will try that.
Dear Barry, thank you for your attention. Unfortunately after updating the system, the list of available apps is empty and if I double click a file, the type of which had been previously associated with an application, nothing else happens other than Dolphin showing me the empty list:
- Screenshot(3).jpg (100.86 KiB) Viewed 2452 times
Here for example I've just double clikcked the file md5sum.txt. The same happens for all other associations which had been already set system-wide (for example double clicking jpg images does not call GpicView, even if the association is listed under root/.config/mimeapps.list). Basically, it looks like the system as a whole cares about the file root/.config/mimeapps.list, but not Dolphin itself.
It looks like the only way to restore correct Dolphin operation is either reinstalling the 3 packages I cited before or re-executing the brief procedure I found out.

I'm also reporting a more important problem occurring on KDE Dolphin after the update to 6.3.91: the management of programs and associations between file extensions and programs gets broken. If you do right mouse click --> open with on any file, the list of installed applications to choose from will be totally empty. This feature is a crucial for the usefulness of the file manager (especially on a Linux system).
System-wide file associations for KDE apps and likely other apps, fixed, see blog:
https://bkhome.org/news/202410/mime-han ... -apps.html
Have yet to find out if user changes get lost after a version update.

""Did you install Vivaldi via the "Download latest Vivaldi" menu entry?
Then, I think you dragged the wrong thing onto the desktop.
You need to open /home/vivaldi in rox-filer then drag the icon onto the desktop.
So, maybe you dragged /home/vivaldi onto the desktop, instead of /home/vivaldi/vivaldi"
Yes, that's what i did . I have tried both ways last few days but not with these new installs. Brave sorted itself out and icon link dragged out of /Home /brave started working , appearing to be caused from a few restarts later and after i had installed vivaldi.
As long as i'm the problem works for me. . Spent 4 days on the pc's and laptop and reading , I have a clearer understanding of the commandline work and structure.

Have sorted Icon start with brave/ vivaldi . I used p/find to find Home..brave/brave etc.
When i click Icon for brave to open ,a box comes up demanding a password for a default keyring, i cancel it and it repeats and have to cancel again before Brave opens.
Can anyone tell me what it is, it hasn't happened before Deadalus. I haven't requested Brave as Default. Am thinking it is an intrusive brave demand to be made default browser. If it is Brave will be going out the door.
The box freezes the screen so i cant screenshot it to show.

Association didn't work (to open pdf files as default program) and running it directly from Applications folder didn't work.
It has easy solution but only to consider.
Have a nice day u all.
Evince was missing a library. Fixed.

Yes, I have been there before. Easy Kirkstone and Scarthgap use an older ghostscript, version 9.20, as later versions don't work.
Devuan Daedalus Bookworm has v10.0.0. I installed ghostscript from Kirkstone, and printing now works.
Why? I don't know, but printing now works, so will leave it at that.

Thanks for the research.
It has jogged my memory about something.
What you have posted, about pulseaudio taking over alsa, is taken care of by /etc/alsa/conf.d/99-pulseaudio-default.conf
...except it is disabled, named 99-pulseaudio-default.conf.example
I checked in Kirstone and Scarthgap, that file exists, correctly named.
So changed the name to 99-pulseaudio-default.conf
...and now aplay works.
I have put this fix into the 'alsa-lib' package, specifically in woofQ packages-templates/alsa-lib/FIXUPHACK

Poppler-data is mainly needed by CJK languages. Kirkstone includes it, and I was a little bit surprised and pleased.
I uploaded an example file to an online storage, since it is too large to attach.

First of all, I understand that this is not the most professional solution, it is not what developers wanna do, it is not... but I decided not to "waste time" or create problems, so I used a portable firefox version and problem dissapears.

Hey thanks for the reply.
I was mainly just curious about what was going on with the updating of Firefox and then still on the ESR version of Firefox.
Yeah I understand about the way you did your solution as it works and that's the goal here imo.
I understand that this is a RC and will have some issues.
As long as Firefox ESR is current and working I'm okay with it.
This has been an interesting learning experience for myself as I've never followed a RC much.
I appreciate your reply and solution.
Thank again.

I presume that you updated firefox in 6.3.92, then after updating it seems to have disappeared, back to esr?
If that is the case, I think the problem is that the initrd does some cleanup when there is a version update, or sfs layers change.
Open /usr/bin/firefox.bin0 in geany text editor, and change the "exec" line to:
Code: Select all
exec /usr/lib/firefox/firefox "$@"
Then you should be back to running ff 131
I'll see if i can fix that.

Updated to latest, all is smooth. Big thx to all the pc literate for your work.
Brave dropped the repeating box wanting a password for Default keyring before opening, then started again. I don't know what that is, Brave can go.
I took @pp4mnklinux hint of vivaldi and it's simple and clean for me to manage. The beach/ surf pic clinched it. ESR works too. Will look into the portables. Tired of resetting Firefox every update with mint.
Daedalus has solved my dislike of parking Scarthgap next to the more mainstream linux OS's.
I have 64gb on my zotec mini's and though mint is mostly barren i only have around 15gb spare, though i have a mini sd slot. I don't like what's going into them these days.
Removing windows on this L390 yoga has left the boot mgr in a mess. Has over 20 entries for me to sort. That's how I learn. cleaning up my big ideas.

Yes I did update Firefox in a previous version.
Anyway I was happy with Firefox ESR which has always worked great but since I now have Firefox 131.03 I'll use it.
Okay new question.
When RC become a final release does the RC automatically update to a final release or do we have to do a new raw install.
I'm just curious as I've never followed a RC to a final release.
Thanks Barry K for giving us this excellent Linux distro.

That pet can can be found here viewtopic.php?p=83851#p83851
and has worked fine in all previous versions of EasyOS up to and including Scarthgap.
The lack of a desktop display is due to a missing item ( libnotify-bin_0.8.1-1 ) which is
needed by the command notify-send and processes the comand and any options for the notification daemon
which is present and running.
It is available in PKGget and installing it will fix the display issue.
There is also another issue with the version of translate-shell (0.9.7.1) in that whilst it appears to
be the most recent version it contains a bug that was fixed many years ago, That bug causes gawk
errors to appear in the launcher script.
Fortunately there is a pet-noarch version of translate-shell-0.9.7.1 which does not contain the bug
available in PKGget Package Manager
Installing that over the built in woof version fixes the gawk issue.
I would suggest upgrading to 6.3.92 before installing these 2 items to save having to repeat
their installation.
@BarryK Please consider making the above changes in your next release.
@ETP
Thanks for reporting. I have added libnotify-bin to the package list.
trans is included in gxlat pet package, a language translation gui, created by vovchik, in the old forum.
Does gxlat still work with the newer 'trans' script?
...it is in the "Document" menu category.
Hi Barry,
Both gxlat and the startup welcome/alert pet work fine if the pet-noarch version of translate-shell-0.9.7.1 is installed.
Launching each from the command line shows no errors. I have just tested with your latest 6.3.93.
Deposing the version that was in all Esay OS versions prior to 6.3.90 caused the issue as they then fell back to
the old version of trans included in the gxlat pet (2018 ?).

When RC become a final release does the RC automatically update to a final release or do we have to do a new raw install.
Just the usual desktop "update" icon.

Yeah, that's awkward.
When you uninstall a package, PKGget reinstates whatever got overwritten by the package.
This is a feature of the package manager, normally a good thing.
PKGget keeps a record of these "deposed" files in /audit/deposed, as sfs files, and one fix would have been to remove the file from in there, before uninstalling the translate-shell pet.
Another way, after having uninstalled translate-shell pet, is to delete 'trans' from /mnt/wkg/.session/usr/bin then reboot -- then the trans file in easy.sfs will shine through.
Or, if you have only just done the uninstall of translate-shell and not yet saved the session (ram to ,session), you will find the restored 'trans' at /mnt/.easy_rw/mainrw/usr/bin -- save and reboot, then do the above.
