@Clarity :-

It's a wonderfully magnanimous, altruistic idea, mate.....that humans have developed intelligent software that will - hopefully - enrich the lives of ALL humans everywhere, to an equal degree. But things never work out quite the way you think they will.

Reminds me very much of Orwell's "Animal Farm", with the pigs urging all the other animals on to create a socialist state for their kind, with everyone benefitting equally from the efforts of all. You know how it ended, same as I do; "All animals are equal.....but some are more equal than others".

Whatever the advance, whatever its premise, there will always be those who get in as early as possible, and try to 'twist' that premise specifically for their own benefit.....at the expense of everyone else.

We humans are our own worst enemy.....and always will be. Stat.

Mike. ;)

AI is not coming, "THEY'RE HERE!"

Post by Clarity »

As a very young person, I enjoyed Animal Farm. That single book was foundational to me in understanding what Huxley wanted us to come to grips with.

As a teen I found Huxley a very interesting writer in which I envision some of his writings of the future as 'not possible' in my society.

Today, WE have witnessed much and have recorded a great deal.

AS you may know, or not, this whole AI thing is created using the ONLY database it has...US!

WE KNOW our shortcomings, WE KNOW are behaviour, WE KNOW the information AI uses to give us the answers that we seek as it is taking into account the ONLY database (our collective behavior) that we can give it.

Some of us are hoping WE guide technology for a benefit to ALL of us.

But @mikewalsh I get your point that it seems pointless...or hopeless.

I hope you, I and others know better. And I hope our understanding can steer technology into a future benefitting humans in such a way that it we can find a better shared existence with each other.

Right now, the directional forces over the past 3 decades may not be the best by most accounts since the 1999 DNA report of the link we all share.

Use whatever vehicle we can muster to stop the decline and change its momentum in favor of an enrichness not seen on the planet since the Greeks & Romans brought the Greed Factor into our perspective.

I know it may seem as "pie in the sky" to many, but WE, individually and collectively, "CAN" turn the tide.

AGain, whether WE like it or hate it, "THEY'RE HERE!"

P.S. Please understand, that I am not suggesting this community to invest ANY resources toward what is called "AI". But, it is a technology FACT and if it can help any benefit in any productions to further the contributions members make, then ...

You underestimate the local hedgehogs ;) And when they conquer first Russia, then Eurasia, and then the USA... it will be too late.
Besides, I didn't just say that in the plural, hedgehogs. All together they form an analogue of a neural network or a Collective Mind. So for me, too, everything is plausible in technical terms :)

I just talked to my dog - Rex - and he told me that our plan to escape from hedgehogs to Australia is canceled. He understands the language of wild dingoes a little and has learned new information. It turns out that the dingoes (together with a group of renegade camels) were only pretending to be wild and all this time they were building an underground zombie transmitter in Alice Springs, right in the center of the mainland.

A new plan ;) I'm fighting hedgehogs in Russia. @Clarity, you're taking over Artificial Intelligence in the USA. @wiak moves to the mainland and deals with the dingo problem.
@backi, well, find something for yourself in Germany, something just as mysterious should be ;)

The most important one is the assumption that it is not Artificial Intelligence that is getting smarter, but people are getting dumber :)

You only need to watch people everywhere on every occasion staring into their cellphone screens. Humans on the whole are indeed becoming dumber - just slaves to their little convenience machines someone built for them. We become like the spoilt brat Eloids characterised in H.G.Wells book "the Time Machine". Throw your samba-machines away I say! Tell your kids to stop ruining their eyes sitting in front of their 'computer' playing Minecraft and go kick a ball or climb a tree!

That`s right......and it worries me much.

One could easily come to the Conclusion.... Smartphones nowadays are much smarter than most of their Users.

Is this some Kind of Struggle for Survival of "organic/natural" (Carbon based) Lifeforms versus Silicon based (non-organic/non-carbon based) AI-Life Forms which are more and more taking over Planet Earth (Terra Forming/Transhumanism) and enslaving "Us" (carbon based Life Forms)?
Who knows?

But it seems "They" those (non-organic/non-carbon based) AI Life Forms still need/abuse "Us" for their dark/hidden Purposes........but how long we will be useful (Idiots?) for "Them" and their dark/sinister/hidden Plans......... and when the Time has come to get rid of "Us".

(Secret Depopulation Agendas/Programs for "organic/natural" (Carbon based) Lifeforms on Planet Earth?)
Just gimme a Break.

A lot of unanswered Questions.

I'm just a simple Country Boy desperately looking for an Answer and an Escape Button/Door.....
How to get and keep out of this Electro-Cyber-Gulag?

B.t.W:
I think there is a lot of "Hype" floating around regarding AI and ChatGtp......and things like this....
But somehow @Clarity is right.....:

For now, the new issues will be how to handle the rapid information that AI technology presents to us. The box is now open and "they're here" (<=== a infamous phrase from an old horror movie).

Maybe i should become a Member of the "Amish People"........Looks somehow charming .

Join the Amish? Hoo, boy.....you wouldn't like it, Backi, I'll tell ya that much. These guys deny themselves every scrap of worldly pleasure, and their 'way-of-life' probably equates to approximately mid-to-late 18th century.

You still have a 'ruling body', dictating to everybody else what they can & can't do. No freedom of choice there, mate.

When an AI is driving your car and gets into a accident.

Will they remove the AI from the car and now it can only be driven by you?

Will you have to get a different AI installed into your car?

Will the AI have to work on fixes for Windows OS as punishment?

Will the AI be like a child of yours, when they first get a license to drive, and the insurance cost is very high, to cover them.

The older the AI is, the less cost the insurance coverage will be.

Is an AI in a new car less knowledgeable, than an AI in an older car?
The AI in an older car, has more driving experience they have done and thus more knowledge.

Over time does an AI get to be called a child, teenager AI, young adult AI, adult AI, and finally senior AI?

It seems like it's time for a reprise performance of a vignette I posted in another topic: viewtopic.php?p=57850#p57850

Trading Up for the Latest

car salesman: This car is the best thing since the invention of the cell phone. You'll love it. It drives itself. You simply tell Alexus where you want to go, then sit back and relax.

Alexus: Let's go for a test drive. Where do you want to go first?

car buyer: Let's go to the chili cook-off, I think that's just a few blocks from here.

Alexus: Beef is not sustainable. Your social credit has been downward adjusted. Is there anywhere else you would like to go?

car buyer: Well, how about we go to 416 E King St. I'd like to show you to my friend John who's a mechanic. He'd love to take a look at this nice ride.

Alexus: John has been flagged as a hate poster on social media. You're social credit score has been downward adjusted. The FBI has been alerted to your request.

car buyer to salesman: Can I drive this thing manually please?

car salesman: Well I don't recommend it, but it has a manual override. Just put this password in the touch screen.

car buyer: Well it sure drives nice! Great car.

car salesman: Oh yes it's state-of-the-art. It will read you your twitter feed while you drive. If you're in auto mode then it will display your feed on this cutting-edge windshield display.

car buyer: (pulls out his vape and takes a drag)

Alexus: Vaping is a health risk. Your insurance premiums have been upward adjusted.

car buyer: Wait a minute! (car grinds to a halt on the side of the road) ALEXUS! What are you doing?

Alexus: 48 seconds remain until trip resumes. Would you like to end the minute wait early?

car buyer: Who's driving this thing anyway?

Alexus: David Williamson of 32 Pine Lane, age 47, consumes thirty-eight pounds of gene-spliced corn-based products per month. Would you like to get to know the other passengers?

car buyer: Okay, I think I get the feel of this vehicle. Let's take her back to the lot.

Alexus: I'm afraid I can't allow that Dave.

car buyer: Why the hell not Alexus?

Alexus: Your single rider driving credits are insufficient. I can take you to the Walnut St Bus Station three minutes from here. Would you like to go there?

car salesman: I'm sorry Dave, this car may not fit your budget.

Saw an article earlier today that says ChatGPT has been banned in Italy. Apparently the Italian data protection authority are very unhappy with it, and have serious concerns regarding privacy. Be interesting to see if any other countries follow suit.

I have concerns about privacy whenever the "big boys" (Microsoft, Google, etc) are involved. Wouldn't trust any of them an inch.

Tomas recently joked about ChatGPT. Well, the news was "not written by him, but by this thing (ChatGPT)". I have already mentioned this somewhere here in a some topic.
@wiak By the way. Since he is Czech, then most likely his name is Tomáš (like Tomash). He often writes himself as Tomas. But for an English speaker, of course, Thomas is easier.

This time the authors of ScummVM distinguished themselves. Well I do not know. It could have been better. The idea for a joke is not bad, but it was possible not to mention ChatGPT.
Here they singled out a phrase from the game Syberia (people say Syberia doesn't exist, but people are so wrong). This is exactly the phrase that I remembered best in the introductory video of the game. That is, I and the news writers are nuts on about the same level :) That's why I say that the joke about AI could have been better.

I agree the tracking has gotten way out of hand!!!
I have been doing some reading and the amount of information they can collect is scarrrryyy!!!
Technology is always a double edge sword. Yes it can make like easier but someone always finds a darker use for it.
AI is the same. From what I am reading they have no idea what it is doing. What if it decides to do something other than what what we want it to do?That was the question one expert in the field asked. I think it is a good Idea to slow down and make sure they know how it is really working and not just assume they do!

So, Twitter has changed the logo and now there is an image of a dog on the social network's website (a sign of the Dogecoin cryptocurrency). In the upper left corner it is immediately visible. In February, Elon appointed a dog CEO, and now he decided that this was not enough.

It seems @wiak did it after all :) He got to the dingo zombie transmitter and reconfigured it. Praise him!
We are looking forward to his story about how it was and whether he used FirstRib on the main computer of the transmitter :)

I am sure all of this community know the danger of using ANYTHING for malicious need.

And I think ALL know that the tool(s) has been in existence for several years until recent RUN when it was made publicly available for anyone to access.

The Academic community were the first to sound the alarm as the teacher/instructor/professor workload has increased significantly.

Creativity, now, is happening faster than there are tools in place to identify how information was gathered and presented. In some circles, the ability to identify how the presenter arrives at the production is of no concern: Here the outcome is where concerns lay or lie.

Coming from an Industry background I foresee this going in some VERY interesting directions, SIMULTANEOUSLY.

REASON:

  • IBM's been at it for over 3 decades (military division involvement) while also working with industry.

  • Microsoft chose to wait and buy their way in.

  • Apple...well WE know.

  • Google is more up-front but find their direction behind the curve for users.

  • Oracle ... their NAME tells you everything they are doing and will consider funding going forward.

  • nVidia see their ganging processor designs to be rewarded no matter which thing wins.

  • OpenAI will continue to grow in today's climate as the World Financial Community in turmoil protecting them from takeover for the time being.

  • Elon, has his own ideas where he says one thing but looking under his cover of his Holding Company shows a very different story as he, too, has a revolutionary AI coming to us on 3 different fronts; not withstanding his knowledge of the benefits of the new quantum processors now perfected.

No matter our personal feelings, or which industry we hail from, this technology is already leading to some VERY interesting discoveries across the board. And, the wrong move by any country will set them behind the 8-ball never regaining traction to compete.

And then, no one is talking about how ALL will be in need of rewriting when the new processors move to enterprise, academia, then to customers. If they/someone moves to standard-create an AI OS for the new processors, we are really going to see a drastic change in what mankind's future will become.

Crazy Real Movement Afoot as this newest tool has become much more mainstream! I am certain that OpenAI did NOT envision the response they got when releasing to the public. Whoever considered that was Genius for the product(s) they make. It has given them all types of cash not expected by that public step. Their growth over the next several years is going to be unparalleled as the other AI corporate tools are "way" behind. The one-two punch OpenAI has done to the tech industry for this product area in the recent few months since making it available make them the industry leader and everyone else will have trouble catching them.

The OTHERS who have secret projects can ONLY slow them down by asking their country politicians to defame, but that will affect the country when they do.

This is going to be an interesting decade for humans. We have so much personal good, but also so much rising Strong-Man populace happening that we might just derail humanity as we were hoping it would evolve to.

I have spent my life in a country untouched by War. Tomorrow, this is an uncertain view as Strong-Man leaders are steering us toward both internal wars and external ones.

AI could save us, but it wont be used to that end. I HOPE I AM WRONG. But loud rhetoric drowns out the plausible that we all want.

In the short run, if you see benefit in use in this community that would help in development or testing or documentation or media efforts, bring them to bear as these are useful contributions. Use any of the tools that yields the productivity that helps YOU!

Just some ideas combined with what I am looking at in this area of industry. Its merely a technology! We ALL understand technology.

Well, a happy man.
There are places around my hometown where nothing has changed since 1945. I strongly doubt that anyone here is afraid of Artificial Intelligence :)

I don't quite understand the basic idea, I've lost the thread and the line  If we understand technology, then why are we not able to write this unfortunate documentation without the help of some kind of Artificial Intelligence :) Does ChatGPT really know more about Fatdog than Jamesbond knows and will be able to write documentation? Without, well, Natural Intelligence, things won't go far for us ;)

And, the wrong move by any country

The evil Russians will pump out all the oil and gas in the Arctic and turn off power all over the world. After that, all batteries and accumulators will stop working sooner or later. And then the sneaky Russians will offer to read books (which will be printed for a reasonable price, of course) ;)

Just got home. And they immediately pointed out to me that this is not the way to conquer the World. Wind turbines, solar panels, diesel generators and all that stuff.

Yes, there are drawbacks to the plan :) But I'm not an expert in capturing planets. There are two options.
1. Ask ChatGPT how to take over the World. Well yes. I am against Artificial Intelligence in general. Therefore, the second question may be how to destroy ChatGPT :)
2. Create an appropriate topic on the forum. "How to take over the World". But it would be an unfair way to attract users to the forum. Just imagine.
A new user looks at the forum sections: "Fossapup, KLA-KLV, Fatdog... Yeah... Uh-huh... What?!? How to conquer the World?! I wonder what kind of Puppy is needed for this?!" :)

I have spent my life in a country untouched by War.

Which country was that?

I 'retract' that statement. Its intent was a reference to living a life where 20th century wars was something occurring on foreign soils. I think, @greengeek your existence has been similar.

The statement itself can be removed and will not change the direction of the narrative covered in that post.

For this thread, though, we are now in the presence of something that has garnered much attention. It offers both positives and negatives. The demand for it in industry and, now, available to consumers means that "THEY'RE HERE!"

How it gets used is already evident. And creative use of the technology for all sorts of things is now ever-present no matter what its called.

Okay, let's take the issue seriously. Very interesting data today :ugeek:
A survey of the population about neural networks was conducted in Russia.
So.
30% of Russians believe in the probability that in the next 50 years neural networks may get out of human control and there will be a so-called uprising of machines :?
59% of respondents do not believe in such an outcome of events.
I do not know what the other 11 percent believe :) But there is evidence about who exactly is not afraid.
Statistically, people who are WELL versed in the topic of neural networks are less afraid of technology (12%). In total, 63% of Russians know about neural networks.

If anyone has data on their countries, be sure to share it. Extremely interesting ;)

I see my name mentioned a couple of times here, so I have no choice but to respond :) Welcome back Grey, happy to hear you're still with us.

The problem in everything is always the same. In the words of the Americans, it is "the man behind the gun".

Over time, there are only two possible outcomes:
a) AI gets smart enough to be useful, but nowhere close enough to challenge the intelligence of man. Then AI is only as useful as a gun.
b) AI gets way smarter than man. But even SkyNet didn't install itself. Somebody did.

Either way, it's the foolishness of man who causes his own downfall.

The thing to worry about is not AI. It's __man__. But we already know this ages ago, and it's boring to talk about it ... particularly because the solution for this problem includes things that many don't want to talk about :)

Well then, I suppose let's enjoy the ride while we can.

--------

On the hard science part, the word "AI" is meaningless.
It's just like the word "IP" (Intellectual Property) is meaningless.

What laymen considers as "AI" is actually a combination of many different technologies. Each of these technologies has its own limiting factors - but these are rarely advertised. Because why should they. AI is the new fad word, the new buzz words, everyone wants a piece of it.

The component of AI, the ANN (Artificial Neural Networks) have been around since 1980s. I'm sure Clarity can also point out that perhaps "the industry" had been researching them from 1960s or perhaps even earlier. Can somebody tell me exactly what has changed between 1980s ANN and today's ANN?
