Re: How to install NVIDIA driver?
Which Puppy and which NVIDIA? Most of the more recent Puppys should have drivers for all but the very latest hardware.
What have you tried so far?

And what computer?
Please read, https://www.forum.puppylinux.com/viewto ... p=816#p816.

Re: How to install NVIDIA driver?
Stop making posts using big letters. That is shouting at us!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you are going to give general information and not the specific information requested here:
viewtopic.php?t=218
That Hardinfo page is not telling us anything useful about the Nvidia hardware.
Maybe under Display will. No help!!
Use the Pup-Sysinfo program for information.
Use menu-> System ->Pup-sysinfo ->Devices ->Display -> Video info
Nvidia info needed to find what driver you need is example: (type and model)
GeForce RTX 2060 Rev. A (this is my hardware)
I will assume you have Fossapup64 9.5 installed as a frugal or Live install.
Have made a save and are now booted using the save.
If no this may not work.
Drivers are Linux kernel specific and have to be compiled for the specific kernel being used in the Puppy version.
If you are using Fossapup64 9.5 on the desktop is Quickpet icon
Click on it to open the Quickpet program.
Go to drivers tab
A couple of drivers are listed you can download and install.
Only install one of them.
To find out if one supports your hardware.
Go to the Nvidia web site and look up what driver it suggests for your hardware.
https://www.nvidia.com/Download/Find.aspx?lang=en-us
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If one of these already packaged for Fossapup64 9.5 drivers will not support your hardware.
This is the way to do it compiling a driver and installing.

Re: How to install NVIDIA driver?
Unless you are doing very high demand and feature demanding graphics processes.
The default nouveau driver that is now being used is good enough.
It is a generic Nvidia hardware driver and has all the common features the Nvidia specific drivers do.
May not provide some special features a specific Nvidia hardware has.

Re: How to install NVIDIA driver? (Fossapup64 9.5)
Your Nvidia hardware is GeForce 6200 LE.
That is some old hardware.
Looking it up in the Nvidia driver web site I gave you.
It needs the 304 driver.
That is the one big problem driver to get working.
No driver newer supports Geforce 6200 LE.
So the 340 or 450 drivers offered in Quickpet will not work.
The 304 driver will not compile in a Puppy version as new as Fossapup64 9.5
The needed software is too new a version for it to work.
So compiling the driver is not possible with out doing a bunch of added changes to Fossapup64 9.5
Plus that driver needs a special patch to even try to work.
Same issues trying to compile drivers older than 304.
Linux software has moved on and these very old drivers run packages from Nvidia, never got updated to use newer versions of the software, needed to compile a driver.
So for Fossapup64 9.5 or any newer Puppy versions you will have to just use the nouveau driver.
But again, it will do about everything the Nvidia driver can do.
On that old a Nvidia hardware.
The nouveau driver should provide all features.

Re: How to install NVIDIA driver? (Fossapup64 9.5)
Hello again
I installed nvidia drive and when I launch it this message appear:
You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server.
How must I write that in the terminal?

Re: How to install NVIDIA driver? (Fossapup64 9.5)
Well what driver did you install and where did you get it?
It has to be a Nvidia driver that supports your hardware.
Drivers have to be compiled for the specific Linux kernel being used in the Puppy version, trying to use it in.
So you cannot use just any driver compiled for Puppy.
It has to be compiled for the specific Linux kernel being used.
You may be getting this error, because the driver is not correct to use with the Linux kernel, and will not load.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is info for you to have on how to do things.
But it will do no good if driver is not correct one.
I assume you are getting it booted to a working desktop.
The terminal command that error is telling you to use, would be this in a terminal/console:
Code: Select all
nvidia-xconfig
when complete and you can close the terminal.
Then reboot the computer making sure the save is updated, so any change is now being used.
