Arch's "Smart" Installers. Chapter 4. ArchLabs

Post by Grey »

While I was about to reflect on this project, information about the farewell appeared on their website (penultimate news there). That's life. Well, the project is still worth talking about.

The authors decided to make BunsenLabs, but only with Arch instead of Debian. Openbox+tint2 and no frills :)
Unlike previous projects (chapters 1-3), which were a set of scripts, our current hero is distributed as an iso image.
After downloading from the image, you just need to type the word installer in the console. Installation is step-by-step. I don't know about novice users, but a user of average training will cope for sure ;)
The only real difficulty is partitioning the disk.

Everything is loaded not from the disk image, but from Arch repositories, just as in previous cases. Therefore, everything is fresh after installation.

At one of the steps, you can select a set of installable programs. In principle, the basic set for everyday tasks is there. The rest can be installed later using standard Arch methods.
PulseAudio. Not PipeWire.

There are utilities for configuring the appearance of the system. If you have the skills, you can configure the tint2 panel and make all the design similar to @Sofiya's in KLA :)

I noticed that some items of the main menu opened by right-clicking on the desktop do not cause help files. This can be eliminated, but not necessarily. This is a small thing, it does not affect the use.

In general, I can put this project on the same level as alis and give the same number of points :thumbup2:

I will tell you about some curious and interesting moments in the following posts.

Well, it's worth adding here that in addition to the standard pacman in Arch, you can use tools such as yay and paru to work with user repositories.

But ArchLabs has its own wrapper - baph. And it works quite well:

To write on the forum, I needed to install a keyboard layout switching indicator. To begin with, I turned on the switching itself. OK, it switches, but you can't see which layout is currently enabled:

I wanted to install gxkb as usual. But then it turned out that the author (he lives in Odessa) removed support for Russian and Belarusian languages and focused on Ukrainian, Polish and Lithuanian. More precisely, he removed the flags that should appear in the system tray when switching.
I don't blame him (due to the tense international situation). But now I had to come up with something.

I decided that I would "finalize" the program later, but for now I will install the ancient fbxkb. But it turned out that AUR had already taken care of it (seventh point):

 Funny moment. I found out that someone "modified" neofetch to the level of hyfetch :) :

Puppy in Aiksaurus :-)

Post by Grey »

Another funny moment. ArchLabs has an old (but good) thesaurus on board. Aiksaurus. It is so ancient that even the name refers to dinosaurs :)

I tried words like "puppy" and "shit". No, don't think anything bad, these words are not related in any way :) It's just that the puppy is related to the forum. And shit... Well, I was just wondering what he would give out :)

Well, the puppy is in the "wise guy" category, along with the "smart ass" :!: Aiksaurus knows what and how ;)
And from the second terminal window I found out what Mickey Finn is :)

It's funny that if we are not talking about drugs, but about the musician Mickey Finn... then he was in the band Tyrannosaurus Rex. Dinosaurs again :? It's a vicious circle :)
