Samsung ML-2165W -drivers ? cups /admin - ...not found

Post by kris777 »

Is it possible to add drivers for this old printer? or how to get to cups web / admin to try to install a network printer, i.e. samsung ml-2165w but previously connected to the router (which works fine as a printer in the local network)
When I type localhost:631/admin I get the response:
not found ?
My system is the latest: easy-5.4-amd64
Other than that, the system works great for me :thumbup2:

Hi, @kris777

Have you tried this?
viewtopic.php?p=64280#p64280

The .deb's are there:
https://packages.debian.org/buster/printer-driver-splix
https://packages.debian.org/buster/libjbig0

thanks for the info...i check it out :)

I installed these two .deb packages on the system but nothing changed.
For me, as if server cups did not work .. specifically, the administration / admin tab after clicking gives the following message:
not found
is this some kind of bug in the system?
On ubuntu as i enter the address http://localhost:631/admin
I get a web page with settings : add printer etc
on EasyOS server CUPS only shows the first page but the admin tab doesn't work! it's probably some system errors with permissions or CUPS configuration ... but these are quite complicated settings, especially in a non-standard system like Easy OS
Maybe a problem with the hostname in the system? there are some hints on the web, but only for part of ubuntu versions, e.g. reinstalling Cups. but in EasyOS you can't do it ... you have to combine manually but where?
CUPS does not work on EasyOS

The CUPS admin UI works fine. Please start via the menu "System -> CUPS manage printing"

Myself and testers print on a regular basis.

There is a very large selection of printer drivers builtin, but if your printer is not among them then you will have to find the driver.

I just now printed a page from a pdf in 5.4, to check that it still works, also brought up the admin page, all ok.

Beware installing foreign packages!
This is where users of EasyOS run into trouble. The foreign package may expect different setup, and installing may actually stuff things up.

If you think that this has happened to you, you can roll back to a more pristine setup.
From the menu:
Shutdown -> Rectify -> Reboot, with rollback
Then choose "Rollback to pristine first-boot"
Then tick all the checkboxes what you want to retain -- probably not "CUPS printer setup"
Then reboot.

Hi, @BarryK.

I wrote your 5.4 image onto a USB-3.0 stick and after the poweroff I tried to install my Samsung printer. It fails.

I looked at the content of that .deb, it looks like it doesn't conflict with EasyOS layout.

@BarryK

/usr/bin/chromium will allow me to start the Chromium-browser.
But if I try to access the /localhost:631 it fails.

Code: Select all

# /usr/bin/chromium
[9149:9149:0612/134535.304444:ERROR:chrome_browser_cloud_management_controller.cc(162)] Cloud management controller initialization aborted as CBCM is not enabled.
# /usr/bin/chromium/localhost:631/admin
bash: /usr/bin/chromium/localhost:631/admin: Not a directory

Aaagh!
You are right, "Not found"

I was still on Easy 5.3.2 and printing was working. Just now did an update to 5.4 and get that "Not found"

What the &^%$# has gone wrong?
printing has been working fine for all releases. Suddenly something has gone wrong.

OK, I'm onto it.

@BarryK

I installed Seamonkey-2.53.16 to /files/seamonkey.
As soon as I add 'localhost:631' to a new seamonkey tab CUPS 2.4.2 opens up,
but I still can't access /admin.

Seamonkey running with root:root rights

Still the same problem!

FeodorF,
Yes, but click on "Administration" and you get "Not found".

This is so weird. I booted up 5.3.2 on a usb stick, and get http://localhost:631/admin OK.
Booted 5.4 on a sub stick and get "Not found".

Yet, look at the changes between 5.3.2 and 5.4, hardly anything:

https://github.com/bkauler/woofq/commits/main

I am so puzzled!

@BarryK
Isn't it an 'inherited rights' problem?

Got it!

Just to let everyone know, I found the cause of the problem.
It is because the change of umask from 022 to 002, see here:

https://bkhome.org/news/202305/setting- ... ake-2.html

I built Easy 5.3.2 from a running 5.3.1.
I built Easy 5.4 from a running 5.3.2.

The 3buildeasydistro script in woofQ creates /usr/libexec/cups/cgi-bin with 775 instead of 755 permissions -- for easy 5.3.2+.
An error is reported to /var/log/cups/error_log that the folder is too permissive.
Stupid cupsd.

Anyway, now I know the cause, will release 5.4.1 soon with the fix.

For now, what you can do is right click on /usr/libexec/cups/cgi-bin and change permissions to 755
Then restart cupsd:

Code: Select all

# killall cupsd
# /usr/sbin/cupsd -c /etc/cups/cupsd.conf -s /etc/cups/cups-files.conf

I installed EasyOs version 5.3.2 here is OK
cups/admin works :-)
@FeodorF
big thanks for the information and the reference to the samsung ML-2165 printer drivers, I installed it and the printer works OK! (installed as a network printer connected to the router)

EasyOS works super fast on my old laptop, I'm really happy. :thumbup2:
Ps.
Is it possible to update the FTP client: gFTP in the new version of the system? ...to be able to connect TLS
I found one small bug. I just wanted to change my desktop wallpaper and got this message:

Kris
did you try to change the wallpaper on the first boot? I have had that problem before, but now I just wait to make desktop changes on a second or later boot

It doesn't work for me...but setting a new window manager theme helped. I used the EasyJWM program and chose:
EasyBlue... now changing wallpaper works OK :thumbup2:
