Where to buy a new wireless antenna?

Post by pp4mnklinux »

Hello everyone:
Yesterday I asked for help (viewtopic.php?t=7767) and as you can see in this post I needed a driver to be able to connect an old usb antenna with puppy linux, and you all gave me the solution, and now I can connect.

What happens is that the speed is very unfortunate (Ihave gibabite per second of speed and I receive like 10k). I know the speed goes down with a wifi connection, but not to this levels, and that is the reason why I'm going to buy a new wifi antenna.

I want to ask you for help to choose the right one (and that it helps me to do network analysis with aircrack and similar programs) that can get the drivers for puppy linux and install it without problems (I have xenialpup in full installation but also bionic and fossapup in frugal) .

Thank you very much for your help.- Regards

(I posted this question here too, please, give me some suggestion, thanks.-

I looked /read pages than offers solutions, but no one talks about puppy, so that was the reason to come here to ask u.-

THANKS IN ADVANCE.

I'm not an advance puppy user, so I need one antenna which I have NO DIFFICULTIES in installing in my puppies (as I told u, xenialpup 7.5 , bionicpup and fossapup (last stable version)

I need your help, because I want to buy an useful antenna.-

@pp4mnklinux
I use an inexpensive generic wifi adapter that works on Linux, Windows, and macOS. The performances are just correct (2.4 G). That's enough for basic needs. You have to be careful because many wifi adapters do not work under Linux. You will probably get other suggestions from forum members.

What kind of hardware do you use your adapter on?

What happens is that the speed is very unfortunate (Ihave gibabite per second of speed and I receive like 10k). I know the speed goes down with a wifi connection, but not to this levels

If you have a service that is suppose to be giving you a 1Gbps download speed.

You need to understand this:
The only way you are going to get that speed, is with a wired connection to the router device, that is providing the service.
An Ethernet cable, directly between the device and your computer.

With WIFI signal from the service router.
A 2.4 Ghz signal is going to give you something around 20 to 30 Mbps download speed.
A 5Ghz signal is going to provide around 70Mbps download speed.

sorry, but that is what it is.

This is the results I get from two completely different service providers.
Also this is the information given to me by two different service tech.'s that installed the services in my location.

Both of them told me the same thing.
The best WIFI download speed you will get is around 70Mbps.

They both proved it with there test equipment when the service was installed.
Their equipment (basically a test laptop computer)
Ethernet connection full service speed.
WiFi connection 70Mbps speed.

Now you only getting 10Kbps download speed can be caused by a lot of things that can affect a WIFI signal.

All kinds of information on the internet on what affects WIFI and suggestions on how to improve it.
What I have found helped me.

If USB connected WIFI adapter:
Make sure to use the fastest USB port possible
Where it is located, in reference to the WIFI router providing signal. Even if in same room. Change location of computer or USB WIFI adapter.
If you can plug USB WIFI adapter into a USB cable and plug that into the computer. Position the WIFI adapter, in different locations around the computer. Test the speed at each location.
I have a USB WIFI adapter, plugged in by USB cable, on a desktop computer. Just moving it around, changed the download speed 10 to 20 Mbps. Best location was behind the monitor, close to the room wall.
If using 2.4Ghz signal.
Try to find out what channel you are using and try to change it to a channel, that is not being used by other WIFI signals, in your area.

The thing is many, many things, can affect a WIFI signal.

If you try some of what I suggest and see no change in speed.
I would call who is providing your Internet service and get help from them.
Who knows, something could be bad with their equipment or some setting in it.

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.
When I was a kid, I wanted to be older.
This is not what I expected :o

What USB WIFI adapter to buy?

Buy one of the major manufactures hardware.
Try to not buy the very newest one.
The ones that have been around for some time are going to be better supported by Linux.
Because some Linux drivers have to be compiled by people that do that kind of stuff. Some manufactures do not provide Linux drivers.
If Linux is listed as an operating system in the devices tech. info. good chance it has a Linux driver.

I have had good luck using Netgear products.

I could give you my WIFI hardware specific make and model, but mine are 4 or more years old and most likely no longer available.

One problem with using the older versions of Puppy Linux.
They are only going to have drivers for the hardware that was around when version was released.
How could they know about hardware that was not even built yet.

Hi, and thanks for your fast answers:

This hardware is small for me, I need other model that can capture traffic to, and it must include some aspects to increase signal (my new room is far away from the router (20 mts), so I was searching something more "profesional" to use it with some specific software.

My problem is than I don't know if the wireless antenna I will buy will be recognized by my puppies, so I asked u about one that gives u no problem.

My software, nowadays, is a XenialPup XL (isos at https://archive.org/details/Puppy_Linux_Xenialpup64) with a computer with this characteristics (@xenialpup)

:::::----------------------------

I was thinking in somethink similar to this, to do penetration testing:

TP-Link N150 TL-WN722N (Version 1)
This is the best for Kali Linux WiFi adapter for Beginners. TP Link N150 TL-WN722N is a cheap and compact USB WiFi adapter that can act as a wifi adapter to your home desktop PC, an alternative to your inbuilt wifi chipset in your laptop and a really handy module during travel. This USB WiFi adapter complies with IEEE 802.11N and provides a speed upto 150Mbps.

This is a plug and play adapter that is compatible with most versions of Linux (I don't know if I can use it with Puppy Linux, and what version) including Kali Linux. It also have a 3 dbi omni directional antenna with will extend the range of transmission/reception which makes it perfect for indoor penetration testing. This is the WiFi adapter that I Used for making Mobile Hacking Station Using Raspberry Pi .

Note – TP-Link N150 TL-WN722N Version 2 and 3 do have issues connecting with Kali Linux. But it will work with little bit of tweak. We reccomend TP-Link N150 TL-WN722N V1.

Chipset: Atheros AR9271
Supported OS – Windows 8.1 32/64bit, Windows 8 32/64bit, Windows 7(32/64bits), Windows Vista(32/64bits), Windows XP(32/64bits), Windows 2000, Ubuntu, Kali Linux, Debian
Transmit Power <20dBm
Frequency – 2.4 GHz

YOU CAN USE IT WITH... Windows 10/8.1/8/7/XP (32/64bits), Mac OS 10.9~10.13, Linux 2.6.18~4.4.3

_______________________________________

You can see more info about it here.... https://www.amazon.es/dp/B002SZEOLG/ref ... -20&th=1

It is cheap, it is recomended in some forums but I dont know if I can use it with puppy, so I ask for your help and if I can find drivers for TP-Link TL-WN722N and It works without problems.

Thanks a lot in advance.

@pp4mnklinux

Little feedback (wifi - no dongle - my connection is 500 Mb/s)

From my Acer Spin 1

  • Under Bionicpup64 (frugal install): 106 Mb/s

  • Under Manjaro: 207 Mb/s

From my Mac Studio

  • Under macOS 490 Mb/s

Does the distribution or the way of installation have something to do with it? I don't know.
Unscientific observation, I have always observed lower speeds under Linux.

wow, those speeds when wifi connected are marvellous.- BigPup, told me a few moments ago than I must not expect velocities faster than 70Mb/s.

Of course the best information is when testing is the base. Thanks for your information.-

Have a nice day

That is better speeds than I can ever get.

I wonder if the service providing the internet connection has some control of the WIFI download speed
It is their equipment providing the signal.

Sure seems a lot of things can control WIFI speed.

Keep in mind I am located not in Canada but the United States.

Internet service companies are not that controlled and seem to be able to do what they want in providing their service.

Would like to know what you use to test the speed??

Note:
I did a little testing using a web site speed test, that can connect to different servers to run test.
Well, location of the WIFI adapter, in reference to location of WIFI router, the server being contacted, and using 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz signal.
All gave me different speed results.

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.

I am sorry for misleading you about what speed to expect.

Seems the company providing the Internet service is a big factor in what you get.
Not what they say, but what you actually get for speed.

I gave you info on what speeds I see with the service I have providing Internet connection.

I just discovered the service is being investigated for not providing what they claim.

They do seem to be doing some throttling when it comes to WIFI connections.

They always use the reason that all kinds of things can affect WIFI speed.

Have to see what happens with the law suit and possible criminal charges.

One charge that may end as criminal charges.
They are giving lower speeds, so you will be moved to buy the higher cost speed, which you have to buy, to really get close to what they say you are paying for.

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.
