The thumb drive is locked, so is it being saved there anyway or what?

Thanks!

Posting of images on the forum, as you have posted happens sometimes. I don't know why, happens frequently when I try to post an image. You may have to upload to an online hosting site and post the link to the images here.

You need to post details of which puppy you are using, how you created the installation. What you did to create the save file/folder.

When you create the save, the dialog steps you through the creation, it indicates where the save is being created. If you accept the defaults, the save folder/file should be in the same directory that the puppy files (puppy*.sfs, vmlinuz, initrd, etc) are located.

If you are in a puppy installation, in the file manager (rox), when you boot, the drives will be displayed on the home screen, the drive that has the puppy files will have a small home icon displayed in the top right corner of the drive icon. This partition is always mounted. If you click that drive, then the directory that contains the puppy files, hopefully the pupsave will be there.

What do you mean by locked, does a lock sign/icon show when the drive is mounted (in Pmount)? If so, this normally means the drive is read-only in which case nothing will be written to the drive so your save file can't and won't be saved.

Is it correct that when I boot from a USB thumb drive and pMount shows a lock on that drive, I can't save anything to it? Someone suggested that the boot thumb drive may have been created like a CD and that would render it read only.

That would have been me.

If you answer the questions you are asked by members trying to assist, it will be easier to get your issues fixed. Without information, responses you get will only be people guessing what your issue is. I posted above attempting to assist you how you may identify where your save is. You can also use pfind to search for the pupsave name.

I have the following system files on my large ext4 partition, but it is not mounted when I boot from my thumb drive - I have to do that manually. When I try to boot from this partition, it fails.

Code: Select all

dir: /mnt/nvme0n1p1/zz_initrd_tmp

dir: /mnt/nvme0n1p1/fossapup64save

file: /mnt/nvme0n1p1/adrv_fossapup64_9.5.sfs

file: /mnt/nvme0n1p1/extra_boot_parameters.txt
which contains:
PKNLPARMS='acpi_osi=Linux libata.noacpi=1 intel_pstate=disable net.ifnames=0'
PFIXPARMS='nox,nocopy,fsck,fsckp,trim'

file: /mnt/nvme0n1p1/fdrv_fossapup64_9.5.sfs

file: /mnt/nvme0n1p1/fossapup64save-2022_11_21.4fs.BKP-2022.11.26-12.39

file: /mnt/nvme0n1p1/fossapup64save.4fs

file: /mnt/nvme0n1p1/puppy_fossapup64_9.5.sfs

file: /mnt/nvme0n1p1/zdrv_fossapup64_9.5.sfs

file: /mnt/nvme0n1p1/initrd.gz

file: /mnt/nvme0n1p1/vmlinuz

If the drive is not mounted, it has nothing to do with the puppy installation you are using.

I do not understand. That drive is in the boot loader menu, so why can't I boot with it? I did an install to the drive.

The attached image shows booting from a USB on laptop with NVME drive(not mounted). Notice the only drive mounted is the "Home" drive, which contains the puppy files. See the highlighting I have done. You should see something similar when you view your desktop. Open the "Home" partition in rox, you will see the puppy files the installation is running from.

Note: I had to upload this image to a hosting site, as the image didn't display when I loaded it directly to the forum.

I see you said that booting from that drive fails, so the install on that drive has issues or the boot loader parameters have issues which will require troubleshooting. You aren't booting from it, and it isn't being mounted when you boot from other drives, which is why you have to manually mount it.

The way I see it, you currently are in a confusing situation because:

1) Your CD (which attaches to USB) does not boot.
2) Your USB install boots but does not save or find a save folder.
3) You have an install on an internal SSD drive which does not boot.
4) You have system files in all these locations.

From that perspective, there are many variables and many issues to tackle. So that's why it's a confusing situation. I would personally find a way to slow the process and work on just one thing at a time to eliminate the variables.

My options of which thing to work on first would be:

1) Find a way to set up a USB thumb drive with all the necessary puppy files while not being booted in a puppy. (This requires a second OS like Knoppix)

2) Work soley on getting a CD to boot. (also requires a second OS if no working puppy is present.)

3) Work on the internal SSD boot. (also requires a second OS if no working puppy is present)

Consider these three approaches and maybe you will get another idea even better than mine. Personally I would choose number 1, and use Knoppix to make sure all the correct and clean puppy files are present in the correct location. Knoppix could also be used to reformat the USB stick if you think it might need it. But then booting would require using grub4dos to install a bootloader, which I don't know Knoppix has available. So the hope here is that your USB stick is formatted correctly, because after you copy the iso files to it, the current grub boot loader should still find them and boot.

governor, read this post from the old puppy forum from June 2020 by bigpup. It relates to USB drives being created as iso9660:
