PuppEX Slack64 15.0 Build 220625

Post by exton »

NEWS ABOUT PuppEX Slack64 15.0 220625
This Puppy derivative is built by me using Puppy Linux Woof-CE Builder. It is compatible with Slackware 15.0 and uses kernel 5.18.6-exton. This Puppy system works very well on UEFI and non-UEFI computers. You can build your own Puppy Linux Slackware 15 compatible system using PuppEX as "groundwork". Just start the remaster tool (Puppy simple CD remaster) and follow the instructions given by the remaster script. Watch this screenshot.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Use Balena Etcher when installing PuppEX to a USB stick in Windows. Other similar programs (like Rufus or Ventoy) won't make the USB stick bootable.

I don't know. Just try to install it. But why do you want Chrome?

Yes, I did install it using a crafty utility from @ETP for Chrome Install. Its a quite a clever utility and VERY small.

It installs a utility to the Internet Menu, which when clicked will successfully install Chrome without issues.

The tiny utility's chief benefit is that 'forever more', at any time, you can just click it to install Chrome correctly without issues.

Hope this is helpful.

Thanks, EP65, for posting the question. FYI, you'll find a download link to the utility Clarity referred to here, viewtopic.php?p=2335#p2335.

It also re-stimulated my interest in whether Chromium-clones MikeWalsh packages as portables for Ubuntu and debian binary compatible Puppys could be reconfigured/-easily rebuilt to run under Slackware binary Puppys. You'll find the report of my exploration here, viewtopic.php?t=6408. Note the limitation I found with the 'converted' Brave and that other 'Chromium clones' have yet to be examined.

I have a hunch that someone who has a better understanding of bash-scripting than I may be able to modify ETP's pet so that the modified version could be used with Chromium-clones, producing applications more easily and more functional that my crude manual conversion.

Thanks mikeslr!

I can confirm that Google Chrome can be installed in PuppEX Slack64 without problems. I used this pet.

Chrome can also be installed in the same way in PuppEX Jammy64. You'll have to install one extra package though - apt install libnss3

As regards PuppEX Bookworm64 you can also very easy install Google Chrome if you follow the instructions here.

The best thing with Chrome is that you can run Netflix using it.

Edit 220805
On the other hand you can run Netflix in Firefox too if you just install one extra package: apt install libavcodec58

To @exton & @EP65,

A couple of pointers on my MK15 and MK15.5 GetLatest64bitChromeVersion pets.
Yes, they work in PuppEX Slack64 but Slackware lacks the translate-shell package so
TTS is not working and pop up help is only displayed rather than also being spoken in the language
selected to run the pup.

Fortunately the dependencies of translate-shell (gawk and libfribidi) are present in PuppEX and the
translate-shell package only contains one executable ( /usr/bin/trans ) which is a perl script.
Installing the attached .deb file will enable multilingual speech initially in English if you are
both running in English but selectable within the file /etc/profile.d/tts
The codes to use are sv for Swedish and it for Italian.
The help within the tts script explains the simple steps to do that.

To display a full list of possible languages that can be spoken issue the command

Code: Select all

trans -T

in a terminal once the .deb has been installed.

Finally to get the best out of Chrome you may wish to install my Chrome_Turbo pet:

Hello exton !
Your boot process with grub2 works great for my lenovo-G580 64 bit UEFI, contrary to all legacy puppy. But one problem is that my touchpad is not recognized. But it's not a big deal.
Thanks a lot for this pupplet.

Hi Exton, hi all Puppy users,
I will build some kind of AndWinUx with one of your PuppEx with the purpose to use as well Android as (old) Windows packages and I have some questions:
- which PuppEx would your recommend for that?
- how to add Refracta snapshot (and if needing installer) and which version from sourceforge? are all dependencies available in PuppEx?
- what is to do get a new derivated version from PuppEx (is that possible all in RAM? I have 8 GB RAM)
- I will later install anbox. are other packages necessary for Android software?
- and a small version of wine. With Wine, the size of the Puppy ISO will probably explode; how to avoid / prevent that?

Hi oui,

Your questions are very difficult to answer.

I don't think you can use Anbox and Refracta Snapshot in Puppy.
