fossapup64-9.5 USB boot problem (solved)

Post by pupos-fun »

Its been a long while wanting to use a puppy distro again and i downloaded fossapup64-9.5 and put it on a USB stick
stick boots but i end up on the terminal line grub where i have to give some kind of command.

i also downloaded bionicpup64-8.0-uefi and that boots, works fine but does not work with the realtek chipset for the edimax usb wifi EW-7722Utn_V2 stick.

what to i want to use puppy for?
wanted to try puppy on a asrock ION330 with intel atom cpu to use it to stream itv content on a tv where window 7/10 and PeppermintOS , that have been installed but can't do it without problems like stuttering video and when it does work stuttering sound.
extra problem is that i have to use a webbrowser that can handle DRM like the newer firefox ore google chrome.

this is the systeminfo when using peppermintOS with 4gig ram

Are you booting with the only USB drive plugged in is the fossapup64-9.5 one?
Fossapup64 has a bug about not booting from USB if another USB drive is also plugged in.

Exactly how did you do the install to USB?

Fossapup64 will work fine with the Realtek RTL8192CU wifi. Your biggest bottle neck with the computer is the cpu. Puppy may improve the video play compared to the other OS's you've tried, but that atom will struggle with anything high resolution or full screen.

bioincpup64 may not have the support built in, or if it does it is missing the firmware. There is an fdrv avaliable for it.

i tried the usb stick on 2 devices.
1 the ion 330 atom
2 lenovo t410 laptop.

the ion has the usb wifi stick digimax ex-7722UTn v2 and usb mouse and keyboard, nothing more.
to install puppy on USB i used the linux image to usb writer software that is on Peppermint10 on my lenovo laptop

more so, it worked with bionicpup64-8.0-uefi as-well with Fatdog64-812
both worked fine on my lenovo laptop, but on the ion330 mouse did not work.

For getting Fossapup64 9.5 to boot from USB.

Not sure if you get a boot loader menu with several entries for booting.
If you do.
Try booting using this entry:
fossapup64 9.5 - No KMS (Kernel modesetting)

it stops with a black screen, no boot menu and only displaying : grub

above was something to use the tab key for options, but that give me only a lot a text.
will try to recreate it and make a picture of it.

i installed UNetbootin and tried to boot the USB stick on 3 systems.
an old parkard&Bell
the ion330
lenovo thinkpad t410S.

i got the menu and tried different options but de i got error messages an all.
this if when booting default on all 3

again, the other 2 puppy distro's that i tried did not have any problem, so i find it very strange.
i have a windows pc so i could try to make a USB on that.
but it is strange

-Use Gparted and make a single partition on your USB, format as fat32

Let's focus on the Thinkpad first, I have experience with them.
-Use your Windows computer and Rufus to create the USB (do not use the dd option)

Let us know what happens

the thinkpad is a dual boot sytem with windows 10 that i almost never use.
dang, lots of updates, slow computer and finally, at last, i could try Rufus.
worked like a charm, booted the thinkpad with the usb stick and there it was fossapup64-9.5 and got the wifi working, mouse did its work to.
so this is solved.
only, why did the other 2 distro's work with peppermint onboard iso to usb writer and fossapup not?
can't be that linux users have to detour to a windows computer to get this done ore am i wrong ?

@pupos-fun

why did the other 2 distro's work with peppermint onboard iso to usb writer and fossapup not?

The short answer is the different distros are not set up the same. You have two basic variables.
1. How the distro is set up.
2. How the USB creation software works

Now throw in the hardware variables of different computers and you have a real maze.

I did short test on about 30 different bootable USB/CD creation programs and the easiest and most reliable for Puppy are listed in the link above. Additionally, my experience was that Rufus was the best of the bunch. To bad it only runs in MS Windows.

Glad you are up and running.
