Problem with HP Probook display in LIghthouse 801

Post by Mouse »

I'm loath to start a new topic in my first post but c'est la vie.

Hello, all you who are well-versed in Puppy Linux! I'm not. I've been trying for a few days now to resolve this issue:

My OS is Just LIghthouse 64-801 (which I believe is based on Slackware 14.1)

Code: Select all

glxinfo
name of display: :0
Error: couldn't find RGB GLX visual or fbconfig
Error: couldn't find RGB GLX visual or fbconfig

From what I've searched, this is apparently tied to the missing dependencies

Code: Select all

r600_dri.so
libLLVM-6.0.so
swrast_dri.so

I'm running on an HP Probook with 4 AMD Radeon processors and integrated gpu. The OS is live with a 4GiB savefile saved onto an ext3 partition.
Am I right? Am I wrong? In either of those cases, how do I 'fix' it, if I even can?

Don't mind if I do...

Welcome to the forum, Mouse. And please do start a new topic rather than add a new question to an existing topic or ask a bunch of questions in one post.

Could you state your problem a little more verbosely?

I'm not sure where to look, but I'll see what I can add.

Lighthouse is more of an older Puppy.

Maybe: is this a new or an old machine?
The kernel may be too old (or too recent) or you need newer or older drivers.
Specify cpu type and version and gpu type and version.
Is there a "pup-sysinfo" under system in LH? Or "Hardinfo".

My guess is, it is the firmware drivers.
IIRC I had to add them into initrd.xz at the time (2018!) as well.
There is a (big) collection of drivers from gyro(g):
linux-firmware repositiry as a .sfs file

Whenever you figure out what packages you need to install, this is where to download 14.1 64 bit Slackware packages from if you have to do it manually.

https://mirrors.slackware.com/slackware ... ackware64/

edit: if it's that and not drivers

The laptop is an HP Probook (6565b) from 2011, but it might be old enough to need older drivers.
According to the hardinfo report, the CPU is an AMD A6-3410MX APU and the GPU is an [AMD/ATI] BeaverCreek [Radeon HD 6520G]
At any rate, I'll check out that .sfs and keep your solution in mind.

I really liked Lighthouse/Mariner.

Let us know if you get an up to date browser running on it.

2011 is not so old.

I wonder what problem(s) you have or see. Besides the error with glxinfo.

Maybe check whether radeon driver is chosen by LH.
You can set the driver in xorgwizard. To run xorgwizard you have to exit to the prompt (exit X).
(xwin to start X again.)

If you are new to Puppy, you may need some help if you want to add firmware drivers to initrd.xz.
That is with cpio command.
Let us know.
Newer Puppys have fdrv.sfs for firmware drivers, which is easier, but I am pretty sure LH does not.
LH was still built with the old woof.

LH was a good looking Puppy, a little fancy, but it has been abandoned.
LH had its webpage at the time, lhpup.org, with a lot of info, history and additional software.
LH had a preference for sfs files as it added rather big software packages.

If it has this program Pup-Sysinfo.
Pup-Sysinfo->Devices->Display->Video Info
Post the complete information this provides.
Need to see what hardware and drivers are being used.

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.
When I was a kid, I wanted to be older.
This is not what I expected :o

That would bring up this:

Code: Select all

  Video-Info 1.5.2 - Sun 4 Jul 2021 on Just-Lighthouse64 JL64-801 - Linux 4.17.12 x86_64

Chip description:
SUMO

X Server: Xorg Driver used: radeon
X.Org version: 1.20.1
    dimensions: 1366x768 pixels (361x203 millimeters)
depth of root window: 24 planes

EDIT: I have the complete video sysinfo edited in at the bottom.

I'm overdue to read through the logs and look for info. While this isn't the first Puppy I've used, I've never really tried fixing software problems or adding / upgrading programs on Puppy before. Will try xorgwizard again and experiment.

I've managed to get Firefox 89.0 to function on it, as far as up-to-date browsers go.

Edit: The complete overview is as follows.

Code: Select all

Just LightHouse 64 801 is Slackware 14.2 compatible. @Dry Falls and i cracked the upgrade path some time ago.
