Rotten useless file finding system.

Post by April »

When I go into some programs and open a file or save a file this rotten file finding system comes up and I have to laboriously click through and through and through to get where my file is. In the same session it remembers where I am and then the next session goes back to the start and I have to do it all again.

What a PITA this program is. Why do developers use it when so many good versions are available and Puppy has Rox-Filer which works so bloody well.?

Hopefully someone can maybe tell me how to get those bad programs to use Rox instead or at least I hope some influential person sees this and maybe does something about it in future releases. Geez its annoying and imagine the newbies that get it for the first time . That's enough to send them scurrying home to windows.

I had a winge at Inkscape too.

use rox to locate the file you want to work on and drag the icon to a desktop link that points to the /usr/share/applications/myapp.desktoptop file?

Using Bionicpup64.

I have issues with file search functions with PCMANFM which have been largely solved by using :

Caja file manager or Fsearch. Both work well and fast (especially Fsearch) , but I tend to use Caja first as it is my default file manager. Caja runs rock steady but I find it a bit quirky eg it doesnt have an "open terminal here" option.

gotta have that!

I suspect that Inkscapelite's creators have just used some standard file opener in the Linux kernel. It pops up on a few applications from memory but its nasty and cheap.

I need to find if the config file has any mention of it and try to change that! However I don't even know what it is called?
Anyone know where the configuration file for Inkscapelite is ?

I also suspect its a java class being run but can't remember the class name for that.
When I run "nautilus" in a terminal it gives me the basic rox -filer
Also "gnome-open *" gives me one too.

If I´m not wrong you can use right click to open a file in a program:

right click in ROX on the file you want to work with and choose the application from the right-click menu.
If the required application is not there, click on „send to“ and follow the instructions.
You should be able to add any app to the right click menu (the app have to have its .desktop file in /usr/share/applications I think).

Yes thanks ,been there .
You can link the executable in "send to " and " openwith" allright but I want to change the inkscape choice of file browser if I can.
Mainly because right click is used by Inkscapelite and so it wont open a "send to " there.

I also hate that file browser, it comes up in Dillo and other lightweight applications. When using gimp I almost always drag and drop files from rox into the application even though gimp's file browser is fine.

Just guessing you have an app you use frequently, but do not like navigating with its included file browser?

for instance, inkscape? go to /usr/share/applications and drag inkscape.desktop to the desktop to create a desktop link.

once you locate your file in rox, drag its icon out of rox and drop it on the newly created inkscape.desktop icon. it should open that file in inkscape. do your navigating in rox.

alternately you can config rox to open files in different programs by right clicking on a file and looking for "customize". my rox has an option to customize both with the "customize menu" or the "open with" entry in the dropdown.

Yes but that is to open the file itself . If its a ".svg" file then you can set that to open all svg's that way every time . You can't use it to open roxfiler or it will open all svg fles that way. If inkscape lite is running it won't open that file then in Inkscapelite unles you drag it , and we can do that with both open anyhow.
