Hi Barry, great release as always. I'm test driving the 3.1.13 release and noticed a couple of minor hiccups. I did an automatic update from 3.1.11 if that helps.
On your Developer Blog site, you posted on December 07, 2021 that "/root/my-applications and /root/my-documents folders have been removed. These are legacy folders, not needed anymore"
/root/my-documents is still there, and although /root/my-applications is indeed gone, it still shows up in $PATH. You can delete it from $PATH, and possibly delete /usr/games as well as it never seems to contain anything.
With /root/my-applications/bin gone, what is your recommended place for user installed executables? /usr/local/bin, or /root/.local/bin, or ..
Another one: Menu --> Internet has "Seamonkey in Container" as the first entry, but it actually launches Firefox
Proud Puppy user since 2007 (Puppy 4.x)
I used the EasyUpdate script to update from 3,1,11 to 3.1.13.
However, after the update I could no longer open the EasyOS Buster container.
I rolled back to 3.1.11 and the Buster container opens up like anything.
Used the EasyUpdate to update form 3.1.11 to 3.1.13. The process went smoothly. On my Dell Venue 11 7140 (Core M 5Y10 / 4GB) Firefox runs terrible, it has since the swap to Firefox. This issue has happened several times, firefox is really laggy, I close the window then a few minutes later I get a Firefox crash report come up.
I apologise for no reporting previously, but as it was new and has been going through changes, I was hoping it would settle down.
I'm currently running Palemoon portable which is running OK.
New Laptop - ASUS ZenBook Ryzen 7 5800H Vega 7 iGPU / 16 GB RAM
Thanks for reporting those update issues, I will look at that soon.
Already some tweaks post-3.1.13:
https://bkhome.org/news/202112/post-3113-tweaks.html
If you want, you can manually create /files/data and /files/documents, but do set their group and permissions:
Code: Select all
# chmod 770 /files/data
# chmod 770 /files/documents
# chgrp filesgrp /files/data
# chgrp filesgrp /files/documents
Sigh, yes, firefox. It works fine on all my desktop PCs except for the Compaq Presario, where it is incredibly slow to start. The Presario only has 2GB RAM, I wonder if that is the problem?
Chrome is still in the running for Easy 3.2final.
Gonna run the update soon and looking forward to checking this out.
I'm fond of the Brave browser with DuckDuckGo. I'm trying to de-google my life. Hoping if Chrome gets included in 3.2 it's a degoogled version. I'm still deciding if I'm going to give Google my phone number or try to change all my accounts hooked to my old google e-mail before Dec. 14 when mandatory 2 factor authentication kicks in.
Did the update. Everything works great on my Acer 5738.
Tried to boot it on my Radeon 5800x.
Video was broken.
Tried amdgpu. Rebooted. Still broken. Reboot.
Tried modesetting. Video still broken. Reboot.
Tried Vesa. Mouse and keyboard not working. Reboot.
Selected "k" for video mode this time. I really don't know the difference between 1024x768x32 vs 1024x768x16. Last time I selected "j".
Mouse is still broken. I give up on making this work on my new computer for now.
Why isn't it working?
testing Balsa with pop3. Not yet able to configure my remote server (xxx.xxx.net)
balsa seems to immediately fail when asked to check mail, not the more typical type failure where a mis configured poll times out serverside.
could there be a way to see if the request even leaves my machine?

Can't recall what you reported about 3.1.11 -- the Radeon 5800x worked?

Hmm, OK. I need to create a PET of Claws or Sylpheed mail clients. Will get onto that.

Personally, I installed Thunderbird and it works great!

Best I can remember, I followed the broken video steps, and then it worked. I liked the big everything from the lower resolution I choose. I tested the two blue light filters I use, JWMdesk sct control and the built in, and neither of them work. My low vision-ness gives me a need for a strong blue light filter, so if I remember, I thought, maybe next release, and then booted back into Manjaro, where it's "Night Color" sct works.

Booting the same Easy OS USB on my Radeon 5800x, Neither the built in Redshift or sct in Display Control from JWM Desk work.
My mouse and keyboard would have had to work to test that.
I did something goofy and fixed broken video on my acer, which wasn't broken, while I tried to boot a USB I thought had 3.1.10-11 on my radeon, which went to a black screen because I fixed the wrong computer which wasn't broken.
On the Acer, after fixing video that wasn't broken, the mouse worked but the keyboard didn't.
I rebooted going back to a pristine 1st boot thinking that should fix it.
I just got some error about a PIN board.
I rebooted again.
The entire screen turned this blinding white where I could see the oulines of the menu and some of the boxes, but most of the screen was just painfully white. I shut it down and will try again after my eyes/head have some time to recover from that.
Just wondering?
Since your going with firefox as the default browser in 3.1.13, why you don't seem to be considering thunderbird as the email?
They use a lot of the the same mozilla components and settings and thunderbird won't install what's already there so saves space.

Yes, I will add thunderbird to the list of email client apps to be considered.

I am wondering just how long it could be before firefox becomes as difficult to compile as chrome?
Do others make use of the portable directory to run some of the portable browsers and larger apps available to the community at large?
Has anyone experienced difficulties in running apps not specifically compiled for Easy?
Or rather, what advantage is there to the version of the larger apps Barry compiles specifically for Easy?
FWIW I have no interest in using Chrome (or chromium). I would be going back to using a manual install of Firefox if Chrome is the default.
Just my personal preference, highly coloured by Chrome's insidious marketing efforts when first introduced.

Just wondering if it would be possible to do a frugal version of your latest dunfell version at some time? I'd like to add it to my set of frugal versions on my second dev box. It means the second 'expanded' partition would be a file of course. It gives me some expanded ideas on what could be done with EasyOS though.
Hello Barry,
Thank you for the development and dissemination of EasyOS.
Thank you.
Exciting release! I think that consolidating the download folders will help keep things "Easy" for new users.
I was just wondering if anybody else has had any trouble running the Buster container on this release. I've tried it on a couple of installations and just cannot get it to run on 3.1.13. It works fine on 3.1.11.
Maybe nobody else really uses it anymore. I just liked to have it because of the access to Debian repositories. Every once in a while it is helpful to access that to install an app quickly that would be a big deal on Dunfell.
Not a big deal I guess. I downloaded the FossaPup container and it still works fine. So I can use it in a pinch if I need to. It still has that funny problem with the ROX pinboard so the background wallpaper is wacky. But I think it will do.
Sure thing!
EasyDunfell comes with a buster container preinstalled.
However, if you don't have it you can download it from SFSget and install to new container.
It automatically places an icon on the desktop to launch the script that starts the container.
So really all pretty automated. Worked flawlessly before the last update. And if i roll it back it works again.
Maybe a permissions issue somewhere now that we have all these users? Just a random guess.
Thanks so much!!

No, in a frugal install the "expanded partition" would not be a file. The working-partition is just whatever partition the frugal install is in.
Frugal install instructions:

Thank you for the development and dissemination of EasyOS.
pctorrent and ctorrent don't work with EasyOS.
Other tests on different derivatives were carried out without success.
Would it be possible to remove this software in the next EasyOS Dunfell update ?Thank you. Kind regards.
Thanks for letting me know.

Thanks for letting me know, I will check it out.
One thing you could try, is delete the current installation of Buster in container. Go to:
Menu -> Filesystem -> Easy Container Management
...the Manage category, you can uninstall buster.
Then to to "sfsget" on the desktop and reinstall.
That will be a quick check to eliminate anything from the past that has broken it.
Appreciate it.
Tried that but doesn't seem to make any difference.
The window comes up for a second but is all black. It then vanishes.
But seems like either no one else is using it or else no one else is having this problem.
So either way may not be a big deal.
Thanks so much!

I tried 'test.torrent' with pctorrent, it downloaded 'ubuntu-15.10-desktop-amd64.iso' ok. I got test.torrent from here:

I found the cause of the failure. If you run this you will see why it fails:
# ec-chroot easy
...tries to run the buster-in-container, but /files/shared doesn't exist. This is due to the changes made with /home and /files. To do a quick fix:
# cd /mnt/wkg/containers/easy/.session
# mkdir -p files/shared
# mkdir home
Then you should be good-to-go

I have done a permanent fix for the next release.
Hello!
I have a Lenovo x201 laptop
After updating Easy to version 3.1.13, problems were found:
1. NetworkManager doesn't want to work with WiFi.
Ethernet controller [0200]: Intel Corporation 82577LM Gigabit Network Connection [8086:10ea] (rev 06)

• Description: Intel(R) PRO/1000 Network Driver
2. After rebooting the system or after rebooting "x", you need to re-configure the key setting to change the keyboard layout.
