It appears there are at least 2 problems and a few things to whine about.peebee wrote: ↑Sat Jul 18, 2020 9:06 am 32-bit Slackware Current based pup with JWM desktop

previous discussion thread on murga-linux
Problems first:
Booting the ISO under VirtualBox:
1) If you run the network configuration, and select the DHCP, it says it failed even through the network is actually OK
2) The SAMBA that is in it, can't see even its self.
Shutting down ScPup and straight away starting my hacked up 528 sees its self and the server with no trouble.
Whining:
The list of hard drives goes top left down. This means that if I boot this real machine from a CD with this, it will run out of room for drive icons.
I have never liked the silly "menu bar" thing across the top.

Re: ScPup32
1. I think rerwin may have recently fixed this in Woof-CE....
2. Samba works fine for me - see screenshot
3. Whines - can all be fixed by selecting different options in the Theme Manager

Re: ScPup32
1. We can come back to this
2.
2A:
smbtree produces the error
free(): double free detected in detected 2
aborted
2B:
I had expected to see a thing like "pnethood" in the menu and didn't notice the "places"
the network thing in there says it is scanning but then that goes away and nothing more happens.
2C:
I may share my "net neighbor" script with you at some point if I opt to move to this puppy.
The script works extremely hard at getting dodgy "nmb" systems to work and also allows for it never actually working.
I have had to deal with a network (not my home one) that is very messed up.
The servers may be seen today but not tomorrow.
Some servers come and go in an hour or two.
The script stores away what works so that tomorrow you and try using that again when the network is bad.
3.
I changed it and now it is partly right
the menu bar thing across the top is over the top row of icons
how do I get that out of there?

Your older Puppy is probably using an older version of samba maybe without the bug?
Try reverting to the older samba?

This typing (<--here) is on my puppy-528
Unfortunately, ScPup uses a PAE kernel so one of the purposes I was hoping for it is ruled out.
For another possible purpose, it may very well work with many changes.
I was hoping that I could make a system that worked with multiple kernels or perhaps a very smart one so that different processors could produce the same results.
The basic idea is to make a system that acts just like the one I am typing on but that works on new hardware.
Starting from a system that works is a lot easier than starting from one that has broken components.
The "ElectroPup"
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1tPzXGs ... sp=sharing
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1KQi0dE ... sp=sharing
is what I hope to migrate to new hardware.
You need both CDs but boot from CD1 at the start.
The idea is:
This what starts as a very stripped down system but one that is good enough to get a machine booted and perhaps rescue some files on a broken Windows install.
Once the first SFS is running, it begs you to let it get the others involved.
With all the SFS in place, the system does everything with no further packages added.
I included the "Puppy BASIC 3" even though it doesn't rise to the standard of "not broken". Sadly I appear to have wasted a lot of time on it in fixing a few bugs I knew about. It started as "Puppy BASIC 2" from someone else. It turns out that there is a serious flaw in the fundamental design that leads to other bugs. I published the pet for it but got little reaction so I think I may very well simply take it back out. I could create a new simpler bug free BASIC but I see little point. If the user wants BASIC, it can be done using the LibreOffice macros feature.
Over the weekend I did some further updates to its help that are not included in the linked CDs but it is not all that different. I am about to start "working" for this week so my focus will be on other matters but I will come back and check for any more messages.

Re: ScPup32
After solving a "short circuit between the headphones", I used ScPup to build a new non PAE kernel and then made it boot from that on the VirtualBox with PAE shut off.
This means that it could very well be the basis for my latest crazy idea.
Here is the idea in steps:
1) We take the ScPup main sfs and remove everything that is not needed to make a "very minimal" GUI system.
This includes all package management etc.
When booted with just this SFS, the system bets you for the 2nd SFS and perhaps the 3rd
This one is for rescuing files from broken Windows machines etc.
2) Almost all of the stuff removed in #1 is put into a 2nd SFS with changes made so it all works.
3) Some more stuff is in a 3rd SFS if needed
4) All of this is made so it will run on a 486 machine if needed.
5) A 486 and a modern hardware kernel live on the CD and the menu lets you pick the right one.
This way machines with huge amounts of RAM and many processors can have there full power used without making a old hardware system unable to use it.
Comments, whines, outright insults?

Note: This kernel and the modules in ScPup are not compatible with each other.
This kernel is so that others can check that it will actually boot on hardware other than mine

ScPup32 network under VirualBox etc
I worked out the "what" but not the "why" of ScPup32 not networking correctly under virtual box.
It appears that somehow, the DHCP thing is not going to my router to get an IP address,
Instead it is going out one more layer at least and getting an IP from the cable modem or beyond.
That was due to a setting in VirtualBox.
I did discover that the "nbtscan" in scpup is what looks to be a very down rev version.
It doesn't accept the "-s <separator>" command line option.

I compiled viewnior-1.7 in ScPup32 as a possible fix.
Python3, meson and ninja are needed for compiling it, but not required for running it once built.

Re: ScPup32 and compiling NetSurf
It was my goal to make NetSurf for ScPup because it is an extra small web browser.
This is part of my personal project to make an ScPup based system that is split into 2 SFSs.
At this point, I have the first SFS only reduced by a few meg. All the needed functionality remains working. Changing the background and stuff like that are removed to move into the 2nd SFS.

Attaching here for people to test it.
"I have downloaded it. I will reboot in ScPup in a bit and put it to the test."
All but the setting the image as the wallpaper worked. I tested every menu item on two pictures at least. I tried a directory with a great many images and one with only one image.
The setting as wallpaper feature appeared to do nothing.
If you needed to add tools to compile it, kindly make a pet of the additional tools.
In another post I noted some sort of version mismatch complaint for perl when compiling NetSurf
When/if I sort that out I will make a *.pet for that issue

Re: ScPup32
By the way, I think you have to select "Puppy" in the Preferences in order to get the wallpaper setter to work.
EDIT:- Confirmed with viewnior-1.7 you must do Preferences > General (tab) > Desktop: select "PUPPY" from drop-down options
I do have a netsurf which I compiled some while ago in ScPup32
I can't remember for certain, but I think the missing build-time dependency for that was perl html parser which also needs perl html tagset

Re: ScPup32 SlackwareCurrent Woof-CE build 01-Jan-2021
Hi everyone.
I am desperate to get blue-tooth reliably working and need some help, please.
First I installed “bluez-5.47“ via the PPM and tried to get my phone working. This did not work, so I assume I must have overlooked something.
My second attempt was to install “blue-tooth-precise.pet” in a fresh ScPup-save.sfs, > rebooted and had immediately a blue-tooth-icon in the tray.
I also found the blue-tooth entry under Network, which was encouraging.
Clicking on this Menu entry a Window opened to configure a BT-Item.
I tried my old Windows 10 phone and had immediately success in that the phone was found and paired.
While it was no problem to transfer a file to the phone it was not possible to transfer a file from the phone to the laptop.
As soon as I try to send a file, the beforehand ticked “Make computer visible” field “UN-ticks” itself.
Than I did a dependency check to see whether this pet had anything missing and found indeed the following files :
libMagickWand.so.3 libMagickCore.so.3
libical.so.0 libicalss.so.0 libicalvcal.so.0
The first two files I could not find, not even in the PPM.
The last three libraries I found in several other pups and copied them into ScPup32.
Does somebody know :
> Whether those two missing files will solve this problem ?
> If so, where ca I find those files/libs and
> How do I install those ?
Thank you for your help.

Same as LxPupSc for the moment - Slackware-14.2 ......
Have looked at using Salix-15.0 for Slackware-Current dependencies but this has problems. Woof-CE 0setup does not know how to merge repo databases with different names.

If I may jump in, I think it is just that they have done an updated build so the last number has gone from 55 to 56

When run from the command line, viewnior comes up without a menu bar.
Unless you know the trick, there is no obvious way to open a file with a picture in it.
The "tool" thing at the top right is what you have to click.
I think this may be a thing that can be changed in the defaults.
If not, the puppy you build it into can have the .config/viewnior pre-created

Re: ScPup32 SlackwareCurrent Woof-CE build 01-Jan-2021
I've noticed some unusual behavior with the latest ScPup32 21.01...the version 5 kernel with this
seems to be a LOT more "swappy" and for some reason accessing the swapfile, especially when
browsing the web, results in severe lag, almost a freeze. This netbook (Acer Aspire One AO150,
Intel Atom N270 cpu, 1.6 gHz, 1 gig RAM, 120 meg HD, NTFS formatted, all Pups frugal installed)
has been happy up until the version 5 kernels. I did a kernel swap with older 4 version and the
freeze on disk swap disappears. I run with a 512 meg swapfile, and normally only have maybe
5 or 6 tabs in Palemoon open at any time. Anyone else noticing similar swappiness? I'm kind
of wondering if this is something to worry about or just remember not to overwrite vmlinuz and
make sure my zdrv matches whenever I upgrade. A side note...ArchPup32 latest which also
has a version 4 kernel doesn't freeze when swap is used.

Re: ScPup32 SlackwareCurrent Woof-CE build 01-Apr-2021
Hi peebee,
Well, after successful bootup of ScPup 32 21.04, everything seemed to be acceptable EXCEPT for
wireless networking. This old Acer Aspire One AO150 has the Atheros AR5007EG adapter, and the
newer kernel + zdrv cannot/does not find it. I ran into a similar problem with 01micko's Slacko 7 32 bit.
Both utilize newer version 5 kernels, so it could be upstream that has discontinued support for these
older adapters. I could do a kernel and zdrv swap, but there's not really any point at the moment.
I didn't have a chance to test the online behaviour noticed above where hard drive access would freeze
when running web browser with a swap file on an NTFS formatted hard drive.
Something that may be helpful in future releases would be a changelog or similar sort of detailing the
changes from prior releases. Anyhow, I'm back to using ScPup 32 20.01 with LXDe for now.
Thank you!
