Clonezilla from ppm corrupts FossaPup save file; Clonezilla .iso works ok

Post by wizard »

Puppy fossa64 9.5

Installed clonezilla from the ppm to use to backup my bootable usb drive. The Clonezilla version did not offer the needed options and the computer would not reboot, had to replace the save file from backup. Repeated second time with same result.

Downloaded clonezilla iso and installed to usb, that is working well.

I tried it in a clean boot of Fossapup64 9.5, fully updated using Quickpet->Info->Fossapup updates
A fresh new save folder, with basic settings and config changes.
Installed clonezilla_3.35.2-1 offered in PPM.
Yes it is the basic clonezilla.

It works OK for me and had no problems with the save or rebooting using the save.

It probably replaced something, over wrote something, added something, etc... by doing the install, into your old save.
This conflicted with something, already in the save.

This is one issue, with PPM in Fossapup64 9.5, downloading stuff from a Ubuntu Fossa focal repository.
The download, may also, install something that conflicts, with something already in the save.

Welcome to Linux software.

Using the clonzilla.iso, to make a clonzilla Live CD or USB, is always the best way to use it.

Thanks for testing bigpup, would have been a bad surprise if I hadn't had a backup save file.

@wizard :-

I don't know whether the Clonezilla install that comes with Parted Magic is any different.

Apparently, you've had to make a donation to obtain the Parted Magic ISO for quite a few years, but a search revealed that some kind soul had uploaded a recent copy to the Internet Archive for free....just August last year. I now have it installed to a wee 16 GB SanDisk Cruzer 'Fit', and am going to keep this as a 'rescue' disk, should it ever be needed.

You can find it here:-

.....though I agree with bigpup about the inadvisability of using stuff NOT 'built for Puppy'.

Mike. ;)

@mikewalsh

I haven't looked at partedmagic for years, have old copy on a cd and as I remember it used the native CZ terminal interface. I did find "rescuezilla" which has a gui for clonezilla plus a lot of other tools in a desktop environment. CZ's interface is convoluted at best and intimidating for a new user, the RZ gui is much simpler.

The CZ from the ppm experience was the first time I had a app bork the save file. Never, ever be to busy to back up.
